La Bruja Gata: Baile de Libelulas (2005)

Innovative acoustic Madrid sextet La Bruja Gata (The Bewitched Cat) re-imagines a wide range of Spanish (and other European) music in a method they call ‘Folk From Nowhere’. Baile de Libélulas (Dragonfly Dance) is the name of their second album, a selection of impressionistic and sparkling pieces that blend their considerable musical expertise with their child-like vision of the world.

Half a dozen Madrid-based musicians gave shape to La Bruja Gata in the summer of 1999. This happy alliance was born as a response to the prevailing dialectics according to which root music can only be either traditional or reformist. These brave wizards of sound have committed themselves to prove that a group discourse can take on many more nuances than a mediocre polarised dilemma.
Folk from nowhere. Here is a bizarre yet splendid definition within its delightful paradox. La Bruja Gata refuses to be assigned to a specific geographical area to commit themselves instead to stateless music, or what is the same, to music that is absolutely universal. After hearing one of their concerts a member of the audience made a remark which the band found inspired: “The folk you do is from here, there and everywhere”. To which the Wizards replied: "The folk we do is from nowhere". The philosophy of a stateless folk, or folk from nowhere, begun taking shape in just a few months of intense work.
