For all friends of the intersection between hard rock and metal, the Americans of Alter Bridge once again have an absolute highlight of the year in their quiver. The seventh album of the band from Orlando is called "Pawns & Kings" and will inspire all fans.
When the megastars of Creed broke up almost 20 years ago, the band around guitarist Mark Tremonti did not flinch long and looked for a new singer to continue seamlessly under a new name. Instead of Scott Stapp, Myles Kennedy was behind the microphone from now on. In addition, the sound of the new band changed somewhat in the classic hard rock direction.
Since then, Alter Bridge have been releasing strong albums like "The Last Hero" or their latest work "Walk The Sky" with great regularity. The line-up of the band hasn't changed since its foundation, the chemistry among each other is just right. You can hear that in every second of "Pawns & Kings". Right away the opener "This Is War" makes the direction clear: A heavy and powerful riff, paired with an unerring melody and garnished by the powerful voice of singer Myles Kennedy. That's how straightforward and catchy you want it to be.
The production of the ten new songs was once again done by Michael "Elvis" Baskette, with whom Alter Bridge have been working together since "Blackbird" in 2007. Also here the consistency pays off, the ten new songs sound differentiated and powerful, but not too sterile produced.
So fans of the band can again strike blindly with "Pawns & Kings". It will be hard to find higher quality metal/rock for large halls.
