Del Amitri's easy blend of Beatlesque pop and country-rock has made them a worldwide road and radio staple since the mid-'80s. Collection includes: Del Amitri (1985); Waking Hours (1989); Change Everything (1992); Twisted (1995); Some Other Sucker's Parade (1997); Can You Do Me Good? (2002).
Del Amitri's easy blend of Beatlesque pop and country-rock has made them a worldwide road and radio staple since the mid-'80s. Formed in Scotland in 1982 by bassist/vocalist/songwriter Justin Currie and longtime guitarist and collaborator Ian Harvie, the duo released Sense Sickness on a small Glasgow indie label the following year. Through heavy touring and positive word of mouth, the band – which now included drummer Paul Tyagi and guitar player Bryan Tolland – managed to impress the suits at Chrysalis Records enough to offer the fledgling group a recording contract. Their Hugh Jones-produced self-titled major-label debut was released in 1985 amidst a tidal wave of hype, but their signature blend of new wave and country-folk isolated audiences and critics alike, resulting in their inevitable departure from the Chrysalis family.
Del Amitri rebounded with a self-financed U.S. tour that broadened their network of fans and landed them a deal with A&M. In 1987 the quartet expanded by one, adding keyboardist Andy Alston and replacing Tolland with David Cummings and Tyagi with Brian McDermott, and began work on Waking Hours. Released in 1989, the Gil Norton/Hugh Jones-produced LP yielded the band's first British hit, "Kiss This Thing Goodbye," a song that also found success in the U.S. In 1992 the group charted with "Always the Last to Know" from the Change Everything album, but it wasn't until the release of 1995's Twisted and its infectious hit "Roll to Me" that Del Amitri could declare global victory.
Their follow-up, Some Other Sucker's Parade, relied heavily on the adult alternative jangle pop that made Twisted such a success, but failed to generate any lasting hits. Hatful of Rain: The Best of Del Amitri, a much-needed career-spanning anthology that collected the prolific yet spotty group's best tunes, was released in 1998 along with a companion CD, B-Sides Lousy With Love. Sounding like a gang of snotty pop antagonists, Del Amitri came out swinging on this quirky and often brilliant debut. Vocalist Justin Currie's lyrics were intelligent and witty, laced with sarcasm and venom. With jaunty rhythms and quirky melodies, calling them the bastard sons of XTC and Elvis Costello would not have been too far off the mark. After four years in hibernation, Del Amitri emerged as a gang of mature pop stars. Twisted unexpectedly generated an American Top Ten hit for Del Amitri with "Roll to Me." Not surprisingly, that song provides the touchstone for Some Other Sucker's Parade, the follow-up to Twisted. Like that record, Some Other Sucker's Parade isn't that different from Del Amitri's other records – it's a collection of pleasant, jangly guitar-pop, with nice melodies and gentle hooks. It doesn't offer anything new, but that's not bad, because the group's music is appealing as it is. There certainly is a randy sentiment within the title of Del Amitri's sixth album, something that suggests seduction and romance, and the band does follow through on the promise of Can You Do Me Good? – at least to a certain extent. From the moment the opening track, "Just Before You Leave," begins, it's clear that there is a subtle smooth soul vibe here, taken partially from Al Green and Marvin Gaye. This doesn't mean that this is a soul record, but that spirit certainly informs much of this record, even though the band never really abandons the clean, sweet, melodic spirit that informs all their work. They even rock a little harder, as on "Wash Her Away," but not so much to change the spirit or attitude of the album, which remains very similar to all Del Amitri records – apart from that sultry soul feeling that seeps through on enough of the tracks to give it a distinctive character.
