Portland experimentalists whose singular sound touches on psychedelia, modal music, hard rock, and dub. Collection includes: The Burden Of Hope (2003); Redlight (2004); Interpretations Of Three Psychedelic Rock Songs From Around The World (2005); Black Tar Prophecies vol's 1, 2, & 3 (2006); Burning Off Impurities (2007); Doomsdayer's Holiday (2008); Take Refuge In Clean Living (2008); Deep Politics (2011).
Instrumental rock band Grails began in Portland, Oregon in 1999 as a bedroom project never meant for the stage. Initially consisting of Alex J. Hall and Paul Spitz on guitar, Emil Amos (also of Holy Sons) on drums and guitar, Timothy Horner on violin, and William Slater on bass and keyboards, the group first used the moniker Laurel Canyon while venturing out live on a dare and producing two EPs of recorded material. By the time they had stirred up interest and landed a deal with Neurot Records, they had changed their name to Grails and Spitz had been replaced by Zak Riles. Intact was the band's focus on all-instrumental post-rock with ancient Celtic inclinations and heavily influenced by Eastern modalities, with a multi-instrumentalist role for most bandmembers. They released two albums on Neurot: The Burden of Hope in 2003 and Redlight in 2004. Both albums showcased what were basically live recordings of the young bandmembers finding their place, sometimes battling, sometimes acquiescing, but always succeeding in capturing their signature evocative and dynamic soundscapes.
That motif would eventually become more aggressive and dissonant over time, with the Celtic aspect becoming downplayed in favor of elements of prog and psychedelic, dub and experimental, perhaps due to the loss of Horner, who virtually disappeared into a life of addiction and living on the streets. In 2004, while touring Europe, Grails were invited to record at famed Southern Studios in London, culminating in Interpretations of Three Psychedelic Rock Songs from Around the World. It was Amos who introduced the three pieces they were to cover by playing them on the stereo in the band's touring van and uniting his bandmates by focusing on choices as disparate-sounding yet psychically connected as Gong, the Byrds, and Flower Travellin' Band. The experience drew the bandmembers closer together, and their nearly symbiotic unity and cohesiveness is readily apparent on their subsequent release, Black Tar Prophecies, which was first released as a series of EPs, then collected on one CD in 2006 on Important Records.
In Amos' own words, "Black Tar Prophecies is the essential departure point…it's where the band finally acknowledged the experimental root of the music we had come to accidentally play together…and by acknowledging that root and embracing post-production for the first time, the group made some of the weirdest, most alien-sounding music it will probably ever make." With an album of such epic proportions showing formidable talent and unlimited potential under their belt, Grails continued to tour vigorously in the U.S. and Europe, and signed with Temporary Residence in 2006, releasing the impressive and critically acclaimed Burning Off Impurities in 2007, following it with Take Refuge in Clean Living and Doomsdayer's Holiday in 2008. The band returned to the Black Tar Prophecies with Vol. 4 in 2010. Grails changed directions radically for 2011's Deep Politics, moving beyond their post-rock/psych roots with cut-and-paste production styles and lush string arrangements by acclaimed composer Timb Harris. The album features the influences of '70s Italian film scores and obscure occult/fringe library music, which they hoped would "cultivate an immersive environment that inspired both an eternal sense of longing and an impending sense of dread." For the promo video, Grails used disturbing film footage of a dead body being dragged from a beach to the sound of Chuck Mangione's bygone hit "Feels So Good," doctored by various keyboards and eerie voices. Deep Politics became their most acclaimed release up until that point, and the band followed it in 2013 with Black Tar Prophecies, Vols 4, 5 & 6, a deluxe collection of their mostly out-of-print 12"s including three previously unreleased tracks that made up Vol. 6 of the series.Brian Way, Allmusic.com

Grails are like that worn and comfy leather jacket that you've had for years and years: it slips on easily and conforms to the contours of your body, immediately soothing you with its warmth and its recognition of its owner's body shape. The Grails = Jacket Theory may be too objective to prove, but the metaphor is apt in that every Grails song is immediately recognizable and fits your listening experience in comfort and style. That is not to say that it is predictable; Grails' brand of instrumental/post-rock is unique yet still resides within the confines of known dimensions. Their compositions are earthy and utilitarian, perhaps even leathery like the jacket, well-worn, comfortable and workhorse-ready. Most tracks are of midtempo pace, guitar-and-violin-driven, and loud/soft dynamic-oriented, like many of their peers. But what makes this brand name different and appealing, like the distinctiveness of a very personal article of clothing, is the detailed minutiae: the guitars have a sweet hollow-body tone, the violin swoops and squeals with Dirty Three abandon, the drums, courtesy of Holy Sons' Emil Amos, are close-mic'ed, where you can make out every nuance of snare rattle and cymbal crash. The songs, while majestic and evocative, are almost interchangeable on Burden of Hope, their debut album, all flowing into one another and telling a chapter in an album-oriented tale. One of the standouts is an unlikely cover of Sun City Girls' "Space Prophet Dogon," which they impossibly manage not only to do justice to, but perhaps make their own. The story told on this album is, like the jacket, worn and cracked with time, yet remains a joy every time it is slipped on.Review by Brian Way, Allmusic.com

Grails' second full-length album seems to be influenced by one or more of its members moonlighting in Jackie-O Motherfucker, namely in its appropriation of dirge-like "traditionals" (or at least what sound like folk spirituals) and elaboration of them in a post-rock context. Or perhaps there's just something in the water in Portland, Oregon. Grails' modus operandi on Redlight is to start most tracks with barely there frameworks then slow-build to epiphanic climax and dissolve back into the red-earth clay from which each was spawned. The focal point of violin and guitar from Grails' first album is still intact, but the sound on Redlight is expanded with saxophone (which, when combined with turntable as it is on "Worksong," pulls a page straight from the Jackie-O songbook) and pedal steel, among other instruments. "The Volunteer" is the showcase here with its crawl toward the epic dynamics of a shimmering guitar and moaning sax crescendo. "High & Low" has a plucky junkyard shuffle reminiscent of mid-period Tom Waits, which drops away for a duet of poignant piano and soaring strings. The title track, "Redlight," breaks out of the mold somewhat with a dissonant deviation midway through just to keep things moving briskly, ending with a grandiose string section breakdown. "Fevers" is another standout with its decidedly non-rockist first half calling to mind more symphonic contemporaries such as Godspeed You Black Emperor! and eventual migration into a Ennio Morricone-inspired sense of being in motion, a vein often mined by outfits like Do Make Say Think. Redlight shows Grails shaking off the dust of their previously earthbound existence and taking flight, into the lofty heavens and beyond.Brian Way, Allmusic.com

In 2005, while on tour in Europe and the U.K., Grails were invited to London to take part in recording their entry to the Latitudes series of recording sponsored by Southern Records. These recordings were wide open to interpretation as long as they "create something that documents a moment in time." So Grails chose their theme as Interpretations of Three Psychedelic Rock Songs from Around the World. The first track is a distillation of the five-part opus by Japanese psych act Flower Travellin' Band from 1971 called "Satori," which condenses the lengthy song cycle into a briefer yet no less dynamic instrumental which builds from slow smolder to fiery crescendo. This version focuses primarily on "Satori Part III" with the signature guitar riff hauntingly echoed by bass and violin. The second track is a sparkling, lighter-than-air (and again, instrumental) take on the Byrds' 1968 space rock classic "Space Odyssey" with Roger McGuinn's infamous "Moog raga" reduced to shimmering vibrato and pulsating drone. The final track is a cover of Gong's 1974 prog epic "Master Builder" which is more or less faithful (minus the saxophone and cheesy scat vocals) to the original's focus on the dynamic shift from eerie synth and feedback textures to a blazing guitar and drums duel that illustrates exactly what Grails do best: transport the listener into other spaces and, in this case, times.Brian Way, Allmusic.com

Now this is more like it. Grails had basically fallen into a post-rock rut by the time their tour ended in 2005. They began a series of 12" releases called Black Tar Prophecies. The first was a split disc with Red Sparowes and the second was their own; this disc collects them with new pieces not available on the two previous limited-edition vinyls. As a band, Grails have embraced something far more experimental about themselves. Sonically, the disc is clean – even when the plentiful fuzzed-out and distorted electric guitar is present. But Black Tar Prophecies is more speculative and more solid. There is a focus on ideas and execution rather than on repetition. Some things sound like they were recorded live in the studio; others sound like the sonic effects were added on not as an afterthought but as part of the process. The spirit of the great '60s and '70s experimenters is in here (from Can and Faust to Jean-Claude Vannier, early Eloy, and Flower Travelling Band), but Grails sound like themselves. Rock, jazz, free-form freakouts, droning soundscapes, plodding dubbed-up and out bass – they are all here, making for one of the most adventurous records to come out in 2006 and perhaps, when all is said and done, one of the very best.Thom Jurek, Allmusic.com

Grails - Burning Off Impurities (2007)

When the Grails released the compendium of their Black Tar Prophecies EPs in a single-CD volume – two had previously been issued on vinyl only, the third was released only as part of the collection – they found themselves exploring new and varied sonic territory. They moved away from the early post-rock schematics that had landed them in a seemingly inescapable sonic furrow. Black Tar Prophecies was their strongest recording to date. Hot on its heels, just months later, comes this behemoth of swirling, free-floating, mysterious psychedelia but it certainly doesn't end there. Elements of Eastern modal folk music, improvisational and African polyrythms, ambient soundscapes and layered textures of various "other" instruments such as guest Dylan Rice-Leary's harmonica, Cory Gray's baritone horn, and Kate O'Brien's violin add to the free-for-all while the Grails contribute enough of their own strangeness. Skin man and main keyboardist Emil Amos (who worked with Jandek as a drummer for a minute and became half of the Om duo) also plays melodica, guitarist Zak Riles – who is part of M. Ward's band as well – plays oud, banjo and pedal steel, bassist William Slater also plays keys (Rhodes, harpsichord), and guitarist Alex J. Hall does all the sampling. While the opener "Soft Temple" begins in a subtle enough way with throbbing bass and deep, hollow sounding drums to go along with variously stringed things, it slides into a rather minor-key slither and drone underscored by a piano playing spare lines as a "melody" though it's all mode.
It's dreamy in a rather sinister way, but drifts and moves along nicely, especially as the electric guitars enter, though they never approach din, preferring to allow the drones and Indian raga melodies speak for themselves until they reach psych mass. By "Silk Road," the third of these eight cuts, folk forms not only underscore the proceedings but inform them directly and are eventually injected with freak-outs that never quite overwhelm their rather loosely attenuated forms. Dynamics, texture and plenty of echo frame these proceedings. Melodies begin to assert themselves from the gloom only to morph into others, even more skeletal. Percussion drops in and leaves unannounced, though because of the employments of very distinctive drones, they never seem out of place and can ratchet up tempo as well as bring it down to a crawl in a very short time. There are so many change sin this piece it feels impossible to document them all. Yet the listener is never overcome by the shifts and maze-like constructs. They all seem to float, dive, dip and rise again almost effortlessly. The rest of this album moves the same way; whether it's in the truly sinister organic breakbeat workout of "Outer Banks" adorned simply by effects and electric guitars and bass, the acoustic-mass steel orgy that is "Dead Vine Blues," the space-time anachronistic dub-float meets Morricone that is "Origin-Ing," or the turtle walking, creepy crawl bliss of the title track which closes the set. If anything, Burning Off Impurities is a recording that takes on different aspects each time it is played. The Grails are their own frontier now, and have advanced the instrumental rock genre by miles, creating possibility, beauty and atmosphere everywhere they travel, but leaving beautiful ruins in their wake. The Grails have embraced open-ended, free grooving, psychedelic rock, open-toned Eastern modalism, assault-worthy hard rock, spooky dub, and even folk music in this heady, stoned out brew. The basic quartet of Emil Amos, Alex Hall, William Slater, and Zak Riles are still intact; they've augmented this set – in places – with Kate O'Brien Clarke on violin, vibist Jordan Hudson, Randall Dunn on analogue synths, and even Erik Nugent on flute. Alan Bishop makes a guest appearance as a vocalist on "Predestination Blues." While playing is one end of the spiritually tripped-out Grails' aesthetic, the other is post-production, with intricate dynamic touches, textural embellishments, dramatic flair, space, silence, and even ambience as one track segues seemingly endlessly into another – this is becoming a real trademark in the way they record.
The title track opens the record with the sound of a far off scream that can mistakenly, at first, be taken for wind blowing through an open window. It is quickly followed by thudding tom-toms, waves of muted feedback, and guitars and violins worthy of Black Sabbath's fuzzed-out bass heaviness and the flanged out space guitar in the instrumental bridge of Robin Trower's "Too Rolling Stoned." It's all overblown, slow, and menacing. It's followed by the wailing power of an Eastern European violin with bass thudding, power-amped guitar riffage and wailing snares and cymbals in "Reincarnation Blues." There are dynamic stops and starts, making the listener yearn for that heaviness to continue. And it does, with slide guitars, electric saz's, and all manner of synthed out wonkiness. But then it changes again in the relative bliss of "Natural Man," where acoustic guitars, washed out synths, reverb, and what sounds like a cembalom (but is probably piano strings being plucked), enters in slow 4/4 before being adorned with minor-key flourishes by a strummed acoustic guitar and the pillowy beauty of a sonically treated flute, vibes, melodica, and tape delays. Taken together, these three cuts have already traveled immeasurable distances musically; they stretch the notions of time and space into pure drift. The astonishing thing is that only 12 minutes have transpired. The remaining four tracks are similarly ambitious and seamless: the incantory acid dub effects on "Immediate Mate," the beautiful speaker blowout in "Predestination Blues," the pure experimental soundscape ocean that is "X-Contaminations," culminating in the glorious and majestic psychedelia of "Acid Rain" (reminiscent in scope of "Echoes" on Pink Floyd's Meddle). The end of the album feels like the nadir of a particularly vivid dream that encompasses both true darkness and ecstatic light. The Grails have once more pushed their own sonic terrain, where all that is familiar to them is woven into a gorgeously textured fabric with all that could be envisioned by them at this point in time, with the listener as the true beneficiary.Thom Jurek, Allmusic.com

The Grails fifth full-length picks up right where Burning Off Impurities left off and goes even further. Their instrumental land of improvised grooves, trance-like drones, Eastern modes and melodies, psychedelic textures, and above all, their very forward moving post-rock music, is unlike Pelican's or Mogwai's; it doesn't resemble Isis' or Godspeed You Black Emperor!'s. The Grails' brand of guitar-centric instrumental music is not given to simply building crescendos. Instead, it is interested in exploring the outer reaches of groove, space, and texture. It seems to be focused on how much they can pack into a given tune to make things like space and time disintegrate in the mind of the listener. Here, 32 minutes can seem like hours, or they can go by in what feels like a heartbeat. Take Refuge in Clean Living contains five tracks, four of which are originals. The lone cover – an unrecognizable version of the Ventures' "11th Hour" – is cut three, and is the album's hinge piece on both CD and vinyl (it divides side one and side two). "Stoned at the Taj" is a brilliant opening track. It begins with some spacy telegraphic radio sounds, a big, bad dirty bassline (fuzztone on stun), and a pulse; these build with strummed, fingerpicked electric guitars playing different melodies, and a blues lick or two unhurriedly upping the tension, and then, as the body of the repetitive melody becomes more pronounced, the drums thunder in, waves of organ, a Turkish saz, feedback, wah-wah pedals, and harpsichords all layered on top of one another, just washing over the listener in a pure stoned groove. As the track develops, sounds and instruments coming out from in back of that monster thump and weave it into near silence with just a couple of keyboard lines holding a drone chord to keep the focus. The nocturnal psychedelia moves toward an Eastern mode but it never loses its center. The guitars, more delicate than before, are perhaps even more mysterious and menacing. When it breaks open a second time, it's an entirely different setting for the bass, playing a new line and creating a different groove that just naturally evolves in both tempo and dynamic. The speed and intensity are logical extensions of the groove itself. This is one of those tracks that you can play a thousand times and still not hear everything in it.
In fact, the track establishes such a flipped-out spiral that the creeping in of "PTSD," the set's second cut, can feel like an extension of the first. Lines between dimension, dynamic, and texture blur. This one builds from the most spectral of elements as well, and when it does enter itself fully, it doesn't resemble "Stoned at the Taj" at all: it's an utterly different series of interplaying instruments, feedback drones, wafting electronics, and percussive elements. Electric guitars, saz bass and drums all move into and through one another with a single phrase fingerpicked throughout as a tonal center for everything – and it certainly feels like improvisation more than just production – that comes next. The minor-key breathing of a beautiful harmonium combined with some tom-tom patterns brings the title track into focus and feels more like a sitar cum rock track than anything else here, or anything in the band's catalog. The rock effects enter shortly after the cut begins, but they never quite eclipse the theme, even though they create a rather stretched to the breaking point variation on the theme. The throbbing bassline, fat guitars, horns, two drums, hand percussion, and sonics offer something akin to a stoner rock version of Popol Vuh's soundtrack work for Werner Herzog. The organ interlude signifies another shift in melody and direction: seamless, sprawling, free; never giving way to excess or studied post-rock "affect." The final cut is called "Clean Living," and is unlike anything else here. It is pure, dense freak-out space, filled with a controlled chaos before the melody – played on a faraway sounding, out of tune piano – emerges. With added strings, bass, and echo, it becomes counter to the chaos it began in, and becomes an enveloping cave of beautiful, harmonious sound, and despite its many dissonant elements, it creates a place of reverie, safety, and the illusion of timeless bliss. Not bad for an instrumental rock album, eh? And if at times Take Refuge in Clean Living lacks the all-encompassing flip-out power quotient of 2007's Burning Off Impurities, it more than makes up for it in the kind of risk-taking experimentation that a listener welcomes and can continue to listen to years after she first encounters it. The Grails are at the very top of their game; they define in the very best sense what the term "post-rock" means. Theirs is music of possibilities, not dead ends.Thom Jurek, Allmusic.com

Grails began as a post-rock unit that delivered moments of absolute beauty inside blown out; heavy rock power plays. On 2008's Doomsdayer's Holiday, the quartet began to reply more on post-production – ambient textures, lush overdubs, understated samples, and washed-out backdrops – to expand their reach. On Deep Politics, it's an inseparable element in their sound. While their music always held cinematic elements, here Grails reflect the influences of Ennio Morricone, Hugo Montenegro, Piero Piccioni, Alan Hawkshaw, Basil Kirchen, and others in creating 21st century library music. Moogs, mellotrons, strings, and chorales are indelibly woven with their meld of big guitars and percussion; yet Grails sound even heavier. Their sonic density is maximal. A low-tuned guitar riff in "Future Primitive" is layered with numerous forceful strings (played and arranged by composer Tim Harris), droning backing vocals, and well-placed percussion, to open the set darkly and powerfully. "All the Colors of the Dark," with its dissonant contrapuntal piano, echo-laden slide guitars, snares, and kick drums, are multiplied exponentially by strings and an enormous choir that signals a dramatic moment, but then quickly drops out as a nylon-string guitar plays a moody melody backed by harmonic piano chords; they're subsumed by sitar and reverb in the conclusion. The swirling string textures on "Daughters of Bilitis" suggest Francis Lai and Montenegro; they create a love theme drenched in dread. "Almost Grew My Hair" engages both electric and acoustic 12-strings in gorgeous interplay before stretching to the breaking point of abstraction as clipped choral voices, echo chambers, and spatial effects consume them while re-centering another melody. "I Led Three Lives" is the closest thing here to the Grails' famed Black Tar Prophecies EPs, with its sprawling psychedelic heaviness and rolling tom-toms, but it too is enhanced by King Crimson-like Mellotrons. "Deep Snow" begins with an acoustic and electric slide engaging in terse interplay before the full band kicks in with a knotty, metallic thud: drums, throbbing basslines, multiple strings, and feedback transform it with knotty tension before they drop away one at a time, coming out on the other side as a sparse, dreamy Eastern melody. On Deep Politics, Grails sound more like themselves than ever, while taking their music to an entirely new level.Thom Jurek, Allmusic.com
