Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is a collaborative effort by film composers Hans Zimmer and Junkie XL. Hans and Tom created an incredibly compelling and interesting and heart-pounding new musical world for Batman, while continuing to expand on the amazing world and themes Hans had previously created for Superman. Noted director Zack Snyder, By aligning their vision with my perspective and seeing the characters anew through the lens of the film they were able to support the visual aspects of the movie in a way that elevates the film to another level. In so many ways, they become the final texture, the final note in the process of creating the world.
After working with Hans Zimmer in the music department of a handful of prior films, including as a member of Hans Zimmer & the Magnificent Six on the Amazing Spider-Man 2 soundtrack, Junkie XL (aka Tom Holkenborg) receives a co-composer credit for the pair's score to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Pulsing and ominous, the DC Comics franchise entry features clamorous orchestral fare boosted by occasional choir and electronics, altogether providing near operatic accompaniment as the two superheroes are forced to do battle. The score recording offers over 70 minutes of music, with a deluxe edition adding 20 minutes to the playing time.Marcy Donelson, All Music Guide
As a fan of Hans Zimmer and having loved Junkie XL's work on the first couple of trailers, I was expecting a lot from this soundtrack and it didn't disappoint. It's as epic of an album as you would expect from the first on-screen meeting between the two most iconic superheroes in history. Slightly more melancholy than I would've expected, but everyone involved in the production is clear about how dark the film itself is. Superman struggling with the public perception of him in the wake of his destructive battle with Zod, and Batman dealing with his typical inner demons on top of the presence of a threat far more dangerous than anything he's ever faced. That is all brought out beautifully in the sounds present on this album.
I also enjoyed the mixture of Superman's themes from Man of Steel with the Batman theme that Junkie XL crafted for this film. Sometimes it's interwoven so seamlessly that you wouldn't expect there were two themes in one (for instance on the first track) where they're blended in a very emotional piece. "Their War Here" picks up the pace immediately as it presumably highlights the battle between Superman and Zod from Bruce Wayne's perspective - depicting the grandiose scale of the fight as well as the toll it is taking on the city. Affleck said that this Batman has suffered a lot of loss even prior to the events of this film, and from the sound of this track and what we've seen in the trailers it's safe to say he probably loses even more here. "The Red Capes are Coming" is Lex Luthor's theme and it perfectly captures the quirky, complex, and evil nature of the character. It caught me off guard at first, as it's resminiscient of Danny Elfman's Batman score in places which leans a little toward camp, but it quickly became one of my favorite tracks.
I'll leave a full, track by track review to someone who is actually an expert in music but my overall take on this soundtrack is that it's deep, bleak and tragic in parts, but it definitely ramps up the action here and there with pounding percussion and choral chants (as well as some electronic motiffs). It's an epic and emotionally enthralling soundtrack that likely depicts a film that is both of those things and more. Having not yet seen the movie in my opinion the soundtrack holds up well on its own, and I can't wait to see how it actually plays out.Ryan Callaway, Amazon
