HISS ist eine deutsche Folk-Rock-Polka-Band aus Stuttgart, die seit 1995 besteht und seitdem acht Alben veröffentlicht sowie diverse Fernsehauftritte und Radiofeatures absolviert hat. Die Geschichte von HISS beginnt im Frühjahr 1995 in Stuttgart, als Stefan Hiss (Akkordeon, Gesang) gemeinsam mit seinen Bandkollegen Volker Schuh (Bass), Michael Roth (Mundharmonika), Andi Feller (Gitarren, Mandoline) und Patch Pacher (Schlagzeug) die Band gründet. Ihre Vorgängerband Erich und das Polk wurde kollektiv verlassen. Im Sommer und Herbst gleichen Jahres folgen die ersten Auftritte auf Festivals und in Clubs.

Die Besetzung von HISS hat sich seither kaum verändert. Im August 2000 verlässt Patch Pacher die Band, Jochen Ritter wird neuer Schlagzeuger. Im Januar 2003 kehrt Patch Pacher ans Schlagzeug zurück und Thomas Grollmus ersetzt Andi Feller an Gitarren und Mandoline. Erst neun Jahre später erfolgt ein weiterer Wechsel, als Bernd Öhlenschläger auf Patch Pacher am Schlagzeug folgt.

Erstes Aufsehen erregten HISS mit der Negerpolka, mit der die Band einen Plattenvertrag bei Intercord bekam. 1997 wurde der Titel für den Rio-Reiser-Songpreis nominiert und 2001 vom Cornelsen Verlag für eine Unterrichtseinheit gegen Fremdenhass in das Schulbuch Durchstarten aufgenommen. Mit dem Titel Komm tanz mit mir nahmen HISS 1998 an der ZDF-Hitparade teil, wo sie den dritten Platz erreichten.

Mit ihrer CD Polka für die Welt (2003), auf der HISS in ausgesuchten Coverversionen aus aller Welt – etwa aus Texas, Mexiko, Finnland und Transsilvanien – die Polka als weltumspannendes Phänomen darstellt, erlangte die Band erhöhte Aufmerksamkeit im Kulturradio, was 2004 schließlich zur Verleihung des deutschen Weltmusikpreises RUTH in der Kategorie „Deutsche Roots“ auf dem TFF.Rudolstadt, einem der bedeutendsten und größten Folkfestivals Europas, führte. Ihr zehnjähriges Bestehen feierten HISS im Jahr 2005 mit der Veröffentlichung einer Live-CD und -DVD. Im Herbst desselben Jahres wurde der Spielfilm Zur Sonne abgedreht, bei dem die Band HISS im Mittelpunkt einer fiktiven Geschichte steht. Der Film feierte im März 2007 in Offenburg Premiere.

Der Stil von HISS, den die Band selbst als Polka'n'Roll definiert, ist eine eigenwillige Mixtur aus volksmusikalischen Wurzeln aller Art mit Rock and Roll. Blues, Country und lateinamerikanische Einflüsse spielen dabei ebenso eine Rolle wie Polka und Walzer. Das Akkordeon als Lead-Instrument, der Gesang von Stefan Hiss sowie die Mundharmonika von Michael Roth bilden das Fundament des typischen Hiss-Sounds.

Bekannt geworden sind HISS vor allem durch ihr unermüdliches Touren, das sie rund 80–100 mal im Jahr auf die Bühnen ganz Deutschlands bringt. Auf der Bühne pflegt die Band ein von Wildwest-Romantik und Vagabunden-Klischees durchzogenes Image, das sich auch in vielen ihrer Songtexte widerspiegelt. Die Texte der Band und ihre Auftritte kann man teilweise auch als Musikkabarett verstehen.

HISS is a German folk-rock polka band from Stuttgart, which has existed since 1995 and since then has released eight albums and completed various television appearances and radio features. The story of HISS begins in spring 1995 in Stuttgart, as Stefan Hiss (accordion, vocals) together with his bandmates Volker Schuh (bass), Michael Roth (harmonica), Andi Feller (guitars, mandolin) and Patch Pacher (drums) the band founded. Their predecessor band Erich and the Polk were abandoned collectively. In the summer and autumn of the same year, the first appearances at festivals and in clubs follow.

The cast of HISS has hardly changed since. Patch Pacher leaves the band in August 2000, Jochen Ritter becomes the new drummer. Patch Pacher returns to drums in January 2003 and Thomas Grollmus replaces Andi Feller on guitars and mandolin. Only nine years later, another change takes place when Bernd Öhlenschläger follows Patch Pacher on drums.

The first sensation aroused HISS with the Negro Polka, with which the band got a record deal with Intercord. In 1997, the title was nominated for the Rio Reiser Song Prize and in 2001 by Cornelsen Verlag for a lesson against xenophobia in the textbook by launching. HISS participated in the ZDF hit parade 1998 with the title Komm tanz mit mir, where they reached the third place.

With their CD Polka for the World (2003), in which HISS presents selected cover versions from around the world - such as Texas, Mexico, Finland and Transylvania - as a global phenomenon, the band gained increased attention in cultural radio Presentation of the German World Music Prize RUTH in the category "German Roots" at the TFF.Rudolstadt, one of the most important and largest folk festivals in Europe. HISS celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2005 with the release of a live CD and DVD. In the autumn of the same year, the feature film Zur Sonne was filmed, in which the band HISS is at the center of a fictional story. The film premiered in March 2007 in Offenburg.

The style of HISS, which the band defines itself as polka'n'roll, is an idiosyncratic mixture of folk music roots of all kinds with rock and roll. Blues, country and Latin American influences play a role as well as polka and waltz. The accordion as lead instrument, the vocals by Stefan Hiss and the harmonica by Michael Roth form the foundation of the typical Hiss sound.

Above all, HISS became known for her tireless touring, which she brings to the stages all over Germany around 80-100 times a year. On stage, the band cultivates an image infused with wild west romanticism and vagabond clichés, which is also reflected in many of their song lyrics. The lyrics of the band and their performances can sometimes be understood as a music cabaret.
