    John Barry's sinister score from the 1984 suspense thriller, Mike's Murder. Often overlooked in Barry's career, this is one of those rare chances to listen to the late maestro write some powerful material. Very stylish and highly recommended.

    First of all, I love the product description for this item; I wish there were more like it. Second, there is another portion of this soundtrack out there, listed under Joe Jackson, who wrote a few pieces for this movie (including his excellent "Memphis") but which are not part of the John Barry soundtrack – which this is. Third, what a strong soundtrack it is. The film is a minor jewel of understatement, moving along almost pointlessly as it sets up a ho-hum routine destined to be crushed. The movie features a winsome Debra Winger in tennis courts, sunny locales (and soaking in a tub), but you always know there's something wrong going on – because the soundtrack is cluing you in on that. And still, when it gets ugly, it gets so very ugly, you're still not prepared. Perhaps you can never be prepared for how ugly death can be when it stares you in the face, and after seeing this film, it may be some time before you feel hunky dory again. This is not a slasher film, or even gory, but if the human condition is living as if you didn't know you will die, then this film transgresses that firmly. The music is a big part of the sadness that accompanies the loneliness before and after the horror. There is no one great theme (unlike in, say, John Barry's fabulous "Body Heat" soundtrack, finally available thanks to Varese Sarabande) but the melodies and orchestration are very, very effective on the spot, and haunting afterwards.
