Nick Moss Band's latest is a double CD titled From the Root to the Fruit. This release presents the musical story of the birth and growth of the blues genre as it relates to popular music. "The first CD has a bit of 40's and 50's jump blues, Texas, Chicago, and Uptown sounds. The second CD focuses on progressive/experimental music and delves into 60's soul, garage punk sound, high rhythm, soul, and harder sounds," says Moss. "I wanted to showcase my band. They're a group of guys who just keep growing musically and getting better and better. I also recognized that, as a band leader, I was growing too. And since From the Root to the Fruit is about the growth and development of music, it became an appropriate catalyst to tell the band's story and my story with the band."

Nick Moss has gone back to the future on From The Roots To The Fruits, expertly creating an album that feels like a career retrospective but with new songs. Moss reaches back to his early days playing Chicago blues the way he learned it as apprentice to the legends, and explored as a bandleader in his own right, while simultaneously building on the explorative, improvisational efforts of his most recent work. Equally remarkable is how he has pulled from his past and present without recycling old ideas. He and the band reach beyond Chicago, masterfully exploring Texas swing and shuffles while co-vocalist Michael Ledbetter's voice drips with the kind of soul reminiscent of the Memphis greats. That nimble agility is deployed to similarly powerful results when the band cuts loose and synthesizes all these influences in searing extended jams that soar and explore without wandering. From The Roots To The Fruits' is better than a greatest hits album because these two discs and 27 songs are powerful proof. Nick Moss Band is still vital and full of ideas two decades into an amazing career.
