During the mid-'80s, Nik Kershaw managed to score a handful of pop hits and, in doing so, establish himself as a profitable commercial songwriter. Kershaw began his musical career by learning to play guitar when he was a teenager. In 1974, he joined his first band, Half Pint Hogg, which played nothing but Deep Purple covers. However, his musical ideas were not limited to heavy metal; after he left school, he joined a jazz-funk band called Fusion. Fusion released one album, 'Til I Hear From You, in the late '70s. Once the group broke up, Kershaw signed to MCA Records with the help of Nine Below Zero's manager, Micky Modern.
Kershaw released his first solo single, "I Won't Let the Sun Go Down on Me," in 1983; it peaked at number 47 on the U.K. charts. His next single, "Wouldn't It Be Good," hit number five in the U.K. and charted at number 46 in the U.S. Its success led to stardom in Britain for Kershaw; "I Won't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" was re-released in summer of 1984 and charted at number two, leading to a series of hit singles. Released in 1986, his third album, Radio Musicola, wasn't as successful as his previous albums. Kershaw subsequently retreated from performing and recording regularly. Although he released The Works in 1990, Kershaw's main musical contribution since the late '80s is as a songwriter; he's written several songs for other artists, including Chesney Hawke's hit single "The One and Only." Digitally remastered deluxe two CD edition of this 1984 album from the British Pop singer/songwriter including a bonus disc filled with remixes, b-sides and more. Human Racing was released in February 1984. The first of four albums recorded for MCA Records, it achieved platinum sales and a nomination for Best Album at the 1985 Brit Awards. Its release was greeted by a combination of teen hysteria, critical acclaim and praise from the likes of Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton and prompted Elton John to call Kershaw ''one of the best songwriters of a generation''. This special edition, compiled by Nik himself features the album, digitally remastered from the original mix tapes and associated 12-inch mixes and b-sides. It includes a previously unreleased version of 'Bogart', a special brass mix of 'Shame On You' and a live version of 'Cloak and Dagger' recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon. The booklet contains a brand new sleevenote written by Nik.

Following the acclaimed Human Racing reissue, Universal Music Catalogue are now pleased to announce the Re-Presents edition of The Riddle. Featuring the top 10 singles, The Riddle, Wide Boy and Don Quixote this expanded edition comes with b-sides and live material - mixed by Nik himself. The Riddle heralded Nik's dominance of the UK pop music scene. In 1984 he spent the most weeks as a solo artist in the chart.
At the beginning of 1984, a Nik Kershaw had released his breakthrough song "Wouldn't It Be Good", which reached Number 4 in the UK Singles Chart, and was a big success in Europe. He enjoyed three more Top 20 hits from his debut album Human Racing.
Kershaw's second album was The Riddle. The title track, released in November 1984, proved to be another UK and international hit single, reaching Number 3 in the UK and Ireland, and Number 6 in New Zealand, and the album also spawned two more UK Top 10 hits, "Wide Boy" and "Don Quixote", as it went platinum. During this time, Kershaw toured extensively. In July 1985, Kershaw was among the performers at Live Aid, held at Wembley Stadium.
Nik plays the Rewind festival and Cropredy festival then heads to Australia for a tour with Kim Wilde.

Despite a steady string of moderate hits in the U.K. and U.S. during the '80s, as well as a burgeoning career as a professional songwriter, Nik Kershaw chose to spend much of the '90s rather quietly. He worked behind the scenes as a songwriter, but following The Works in 1990, he didn't record for nearly a full decade. Finally, he returned to action in 1999 with 15 Minutes, an immaculately produced collection of modern mature pop. Kershaw always specialized in subtle, sophisticated pop, and that's what he delivers on 15 Minutes, albeit with a modernized sheen. There is a difference, however. Like his peers Nick Heyward and Howard Jones, Kershaw winds up making sophisticated, mature pop that feels like it should be about the songwriting but winds up being about sonic texture. Of course, that means that 15 Minutes can be a pleasant listen, and it is – but there aren't many songs that make a lasting impression. Still, it's easy to admire the craft behind the production and the subtle songwriting, even if the songs don't work their way into your subconscious. And those are enough to make it worthwhile for hardcore fans longing for new Kershaw, even if it isn't enough to win a new audience.Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Allmusic.com

You've Got to Laugh is the seventh studio album by Nik Kershaw, released on 26 October 2006 under his own record label. In a 2008 interview, Kershaw spoke of the album. "You've Got to Laugh took about five years to get together. That wasn't intense recording, obviously. I just waited until I'd got enough tracks and that was the time to release it. Had it not been for my girlfriend, it probably wouldn't have been released at all. The songs are all about my own experiences or those of people around me; they're about friends and foes; they're about real life, which means there's nothing too glamorous going on".
