Richard van Kruysdijk (Sonar Lodge, Phallus Dei) and Niels van Hoorn (The Legendary Pink Dots) hooked up in 2004 and produced 2 LP's ("Rorschach" and "Rorschach II"), which were later released on CD ("Everything Is Closer") in 2006.
On 'Everything Is Closer", Strange Attractor razes the edges of jazz, ambient and soulful electronica, combining Niels van Hoorn's unique approach to bass clarinet and impressive arsenal of saxophones and other acoustic and electronic wind instruments and effects with the arranging and production skills of Richard van Kruysdijk,who is also responsible for all other instruments (keyboards, drums, electronics,..) and artwork. Broken beat lovers will appreciate the versatile rhythmic drive, sometimes complex, but always dedicated to the groove, whereas ambient fans are treated to some lush textures, delicately woven by electronica and a wide range of (manipulated) brass and wood wind instruments.On top of this, special guest vocals by such diverse singers as Edward Ka-Spel (The Legendary Pink Dots), Richard Sinclair (Caravan, Hatfield & the North) and Marie-Claudine Vanvlemen (Sonar Lodge) add even more colour to the rich sound palette of this release.
For their second Strange Attractor album (Mettle, 2008), Niels van Hoorn and Richard van Krusdijk enlist an array of guest voices, including those of David J, Graham Lewis of Wire, Tuxedomoon's Winston Tong, and Peter Christopherson's Threshold Houseboys Choir. The mix of acoustic instruments and electronics makes for a relaxed late-night vibe, one that's not terribly involved but doesn't quite stray into light jazz territory either. The music doesn't say much on its own but instead serves best as support for the many guest vocalists, whose personalities give the tracks definition. Graham Lewis makes "The Best Things Are Left Unspoken" one of the album's highlights, while David J comes up with the best lyrics on "Sleaze," in which he bemoans the city's vanishing seediness. Winston Tong gives his track a literary bent with the reading of his own vivid translation of Baudelaire's L'Invitation au Voyage. Dotted between the other guests, the Strange Attractor's live mainstay Marie-Claudine gets four songs of her own which give the album a sense of continuity.
"Anatomy Of A Tear" (2011) is already the third album of Dutch band. There is another interesting shift in direction while their second album Mettle was mostly a Jazz album, this one is more into Psychedelic Prog ala ARCHIVE with some Gothic overtones. Maybe its also because of the extended guest list: we have David J and Graham Lewis again (of respectively Bauhaus/Wire fame), there is also Blaine L. Reininger of Tuxedomoon, and ex-Swans Jarboe with her beautiful dark chanting. And, of course the core trio: Marie-Claudine Vanvlemen, Niels Van Hoorn, Richard Van Kruysdijk.
