Yezda Urfa was an American progressive rock band founded in the fall of 1973. The band recorded two albums before breaking up in the spring of 1981. The band's music is currently distributed by Syn-Phonic. The name Yezda Urfa comes from Yazd, Iran and Urfa, Turkey. The band came across these names while leafing through the dictionary, looking for a band name. Yazd was changed to Yezda to ease pronunciation. Described as a blend of Yes and Gentle Giant, Yezda Urfa was known for playing high-energy progressive rock. Break-neck tempos, changing time signatures, and diverse instrumentation were hallmarks of their sound.

While UK prog rock had a degree of popularity here in the states through the late sixties and through most of the seventies, we didn’t really generate a significant prog response of our own until the later part of the seventies with Kansas and Styx, and even with those bands, what sold them to American audiences was more about the blend of hard rock influences (a much weightier genre here during that time). Yet in the shadows, there were a small handful of indie artists doing things their own way who never saw the light of day. Such was the fate of Chicago, Illinois' flashy Yezda Urfa, who toiled in relative obscurity from 1973 to 1981 until being rediscovered and finally getting some recognition through the boutique US prog label Syn-Phonic in the 90’s, a bit of good karma for prog fans as owning the original indie pressing will cost a small fortune.

The debut LP, Boris, is actually collection of demos, several of which would be developed further on their self-produced follow-up Sacred Baboon. Because it is a demo recording with limited overdubs, it almost has the energy of a live recording, and its a well-recorded, impressive-sounding artifact for its day and budget. Lead singer Rick Rodenbaugh is very obviously bringing a Jon Anderson vibe, which pared with Phil Kimbrough's dextrous, creative synth work, Brad Christoff's high-energy, Bruford-like drum work, makes classic-era Yes a very obvious starting point, however the band often proves hard to easily pigeonhole as you will also find some Gentle Giant on “The Basis of Dubenglazy While Dirk Does the Dance,” Canterbury prog influences such as on opener "Boris (and his three verses, including flow guides aren't my bag),” some ELP-like moments in “Tuta in the Moya & Tyreczimmage” along with little unique twists of Americana, very obviously on display with the banjo-led country/western/jazz curio/intro "Texas Armadillo."

As the band themselves proclaim on their (now defunct) website "We took the progressive form nearly to its limit in terms of composition and instrumentation.” As goes consideration for the genre in general, such thoughts can be either an invitation or a caveat depending on how much you value pop songwriting and hooks. That said, rather than derivative, the blend of influences sounds fresh, while the band's ambitious arrangements and energetic attack ensures that the listener is never bored. Anyone who enjoys progressive rock in general should probably seek this one out, especially those that are into the “classic” prog sound looking for a twist on their more well-known heroes.
