The latest offering from New Zealand's burgeoning breakbeat scene, and perhaps its most accomplished yet, comes courtesy of Christchurch drum and bass group Shapeshifter. Renowned for their blistering live sets, these boys sure know their breaks, and run things with the lush international flavours you'd expect from, say, LTJ Bukem and his Good Lookin' cohorts. Shapeshifterhave translated their full band sound to disc well, splicing real time drumming with pre-programmed beats and layering plenty of live instrumentation on top. Track styles vary nicely throughout the course ofthe album, from a rolling atmospheric opener through summery vocals intodeeper dancefloor material, then followed by a nice downbeat section and their b.net smash hit 'Tapestry' closing things out. 'Real Time' is a strong debut from an exciting new group, and one of New Zealand's top releases for 2001.
