Anthology - The Tangerine Dream Collection Part 6 of 8 (1997 to 2003)

119 albums and growing | studio/soundtrack/concert | 1.64 GB

Without doubt, the recordings of Tangerine Dream have made the greatest impact on the widest variety of instrumental music during the 1980s and '90s, ranging from the most atmospheric new age and space music to the harshest abrasions of electronic dance. Founded in 1967 by Edgar Froese in Berlin, the group has progressed through a full three dozen lineups (Froese being the only continuous member with staying power) and four distinct stages of development: the experimentalist minimalism of the late '60s and early '70s; stark sequencer trance during the mid- to late '70s, the group's most influential period; an organic form of instrumental music on their frequent film and studio work during the 1980s; and, finally, a more propulsive dance style, which showed Tangerine Dream with a sound quite similar to their electronic inheritors in the field of dance music.

This anthology is the most complete (and of course, the largest) collection of TD albums that is roaming the net these days. Together with the "Tangerine Tree"-collection, it contains more then 200 albums from five decades! Nevertheless, there are better-quality versions of some of these albums floating around, especially here on AvaxHome, the place for high quality music. Those of you, who can tell the difference between 192kbps and 256 kbps or between 320kbps and FLAC, you may like to regard this collection as a basis and upgrade your archive from time to time with better bitrate versions if and when they're available. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the work and art of Tangerine Dream as much, as I do.

Notes
Just a few weeks after TD's spring tour in Europe, the band issued a recording of their concert in Zabrze (former: Hindenburg) in Poland on April 23rd, at the Dome Muziki i Tanca. The CD, released on TD's own TDI label, features the complete second set of the show as "untouched" recording with no polishing and no sound editing or additions. The title Tournado is a play on words, taken from "Tour" and the stormy "Tornado". The official street day of this release was scheduled for September 29th - being TD's 30th anniversary! Though Edgar and Jerome Froese refused to even think about all celebrations, anniversary events and other specialities because of the "supermarket commercial mentality" these events often are accompanied by, TD did "something special to their fans" in releasing this album on this very day. Nevertheless, a small number of copies had been available before by mail order. TD's first announcement however was to sell the CDs after the concerts in Athens and Thessaloniki (Greece) and in Kassel (Germany) during the "documenta X" art exhibition in June 1997, but this idea of a "tour only" pre-release sale of the CD failed because these three shows had been cancelled.

With Tournado, TD released another live album performed in Poland, 14 years after their famous Warsaw concert featured on the Poland recording. "The concert hall had the best acoustics for electronic sounds of all venues TD played during their tour - some good reason for a band which always counts on music and sound in the first place. Also you will hear a very enthusiastic crowd which did help to build the typical TD concert atmosphere", TD explained.

Notes
In late 1998, TDI released the first half of the 1997 Shepherds Bush concert, called the 'Vintage Set', on the CD Valentine Wheels. It was first available only by internet order in a so-called "Holiday Season Booster", including a T-shirt, an autographed photo, a sticker and the CD. In April 1999 the album was officially released with slightly different cover artwork.

During the first part of the concert Tangerine Dream had performed compositions of the range from 1977 to 1997; the corresponding original versions are featured on the albums Sorcerer (1977), Thief (1981), Poland, Warsaw In The Sun (both 1984), Le Parc (1985), Underwater Sunlight (1986), 220 Volt Live (1993), Tangents (1994), Tyranny Of Beauty (1995) and Oasis (1997).

Notes
In June 1998, the first two volumes of The Hollywood Years were released by TDI, starting a series of CDs containing "TD's leftover scores, songs and sequences", as stated on the back cover.

While the track City Monk is featured as Ulan-Ude on the soundtrack album Transsiberia, the track Riding The Lizard Overland is actually the end titles of the film Red Heat from 1986. The soundtrack of this film has never been released, though in summer 1997 TD announced it to be released in early 1998 by TDI. The appearance of this track was a surprise considering the information in the booklet that "all music material on this record has been entirely composed, performed and arranged by Edgar and Jerome Froese. No other composers, ghostwriters or studio musicians have been involved in the writing or production procedure of this record." As Jerome Froese was definitive not in business with TD back in 1986, this means that the music was composed by Edgar Froese solely without the support of other band members of 1985/86 like Chris Franke or Johannes Schmoelling.

With Rose Of Babylon this album features one of the few Tangerine Dream vocal tracks. The lyrics have been written and sung by Vicky McClure, known as the singer of the Olympic Summer Games hymn in Los Angeles. In 1998 there had been rumours about a full-length album release of Vicky McClure on TD's label TDI.

Notes
In summer 1997 Edgar and Jerome Froese started for a "strange musical and geographical trip" in composing the score for Transsiberia, an experimental black-and-white film about a journey on the famous Transsiberian Railway from Moscow to Vladivostok. It is unknown whether this film was every released officially.

The composition The Golden Horn is strongly reminiscent to the track Turning Off The Wheel from Optical Race back in 1988. The soundtrack album was released on CD by TD's own label TDI in June 1998 and re-released one year later with a different cover artwork.

In January 2007 this release became available as MP3 download at the Tangerine Dream Download Shop. While the compositions had been credited to both Edgar Froese and Jerome Froese in the original CD booklet, all tracks are listed as compositions by Edgar Froese only on the downloadable artwork.

Notes
Tangerine Dream's 1999 original motion picture soundtrack fits into the series started with Canyon Dreams (1987) and continued with Oasis (1997): TD did the music for a video which features one certain subject, here the collapsing of buildings. What A Blast features nine tracks which are quite different in style and mood. The CD title and the movie subject may make expect bombastic or at least very rhythmic music, but in fact all of the compositions are quiet sensitive. The opening tracks are rather tranquil and melodic, a little bit like the previously unreleased compositions on Edgar Froese's solo album Beyond The Storm. The middle tracks feature some totally new elements combined with structures and little patterns like taken from older times. The last tracks of the CD remind on The Dream Mixes and TimeSquare. Two of them, TimeSquare (The Legendary N.Y. Brix Mix) and Jungle Journey (Bond Of Ages Mix), are really new remixes of tracks from the albums TimeSquare (1997) and Turn Of The Tides (1994).

The cover artwork of the TDI release does not refer to the film subject directly. The design fits into the graphic and computer art style of covers TD has started with the release on their own label TDI.

The US based Miramar company released the soundtrack titled Architecture In Motion with a totally different cover artwork and without the opening composition Stoneyard.

Notes
NASA's Mars Polar Lander mission provided the idea for TD's 1999 studio album Mars Polaris. The music material was first performed during TD's only 1999 concert in Osnabrück, Germany, on June 12th, at the KlangArt festival. The album had been announced as an "original motion picture space reality soundtrack" before, and it turned out to be a score for pictures in the listeners' minds: Mars Polaris contains ten tracks inspired by the flight of the 'Mars Polar Lander' capsule to Earth's neighbour planet. The capsule had been launched on January 3rd, 1999 and it was intended to reach Mars on December 3rd, 1999, but it got lost accidently. TD composed the music that could have accompanied the capsule's mission, even if they avoided the word "soundtrack" on the final release – a film does not exist. However, some visual impressions could be seen during the live presentation of Mars Polaris at the 1999 KlangArt festival. The CD contains the major part of the music of this event, including a short piece similar to an excerpt of the Sony Center Topping Out Ceremony Score CD.

With Mars Polaris, the band has followed their late nineties musical style, which has started with albums like Transsiberia and What A Blast, but now completed by some new sounds and layers, used very carefully. With this album, TD have returned to play some longer compositions again: Four of the ten tracks are about ten minutes long each. Different from earlier announcements, Mars Polaris is not a double CD with more than 100 minutes music but a single CD of about 70 minutes. The whole artwork concept fits into the typical TDI style of the previous releases. The booklet text contains facts about the planet Mars as well as technical data of the NASA capsule.

There was an alternate version, titled Mars Polaris - Original Motion Picture Space Reality circulating the shops, which features a different track listing that consists of songs from this release and from the album Great Wall Of China. See The Mars Polaris Mystery for differences of these two releases.

In December 1999 TD released the soundtrack album for a Chinese documentary titled Great Wall Of China, though it is unknown whether this movie was ever officially released.

A pre-release version of this CD was available via the TDI website: Collectors, who ordered the so-called "Millennium Booster" from TDI, got a package including the pre-release of Great Wall Of China, the second limited edition of The Keep, the extraordinary rare Sony Center Topping Out Ceremony Score CD-5 and an autographed promotional poster. The regular CD was released in early 2000 and featured a slightly different cover artwork.

In January 2007 this release became available as MP3 download at the Tangerine Dream Download Shop. On this download re-release the only two of the original tracks that were composed by Jerome Froese have been replaced by new compositions by Edgar Froese which are not available on any regular CD release at time of writing.

Musician(s) Edgar Froese, Chris Franke, Peter Baumann
Producer(s) Edgar Froese

Notes
Announced since 1998, TDI released Soundmill Navigator in April 2000 as the second volume of their "Tangerine Dream Classics Edition". The CD features live material that was recorded back in 1976 when TD played at the Berlin Philharmonics. Like Sohoman, this live recording has obviously been reworked adding new layers to the original sound, but this reworking is not mentioned in the CD booklet. In spite of this the sound quality of the recording is much less excellent than TD listeners are used to. Noise from the damaged 24 year old source tape could obviously not be removed during mastering. This resulted in a periodical scratching noise, ever changing from the left to the right stereo channel that makes listening to the CD via headphones rather annoying.

These facts made Soundmill Navigator to one of the TD releases most debated among fans. Some collectors gave this historic release a warm welcome, others complained that the CD does not feature the original, untouched music or that the sound quality could have been better.

The original, untouched concert (taken from a radio broadcast) has been fan-released as Tangerine Tree Volume 8: Berlin 1976 and later officially released as part of The Bootleg Box Set Vol. 1.

Notes
In April 2000 TDI released Tang-go, a double CD compilation, featuring well-known material of the time from 1988 to 1999; thus the subtitle '1990 - 2000' is not exactly correct. Obviously, this compilation was intended to give a overview of the then current TDI catalogue as it contains tracks from most of the albums available from TD's own label: Optical Race (1988), Lily On The Beach (1989), Melrose (1990), Rockoon (1992), Tyranny Of Beauty, The Dream Mixes (both 1995), Tournado, TimeSquare (both 1997), The Hollywood Years Vol. 2, Transsiberia, Ça Va - Ça Marche - Ça Ira Encore (all 1998), Valentine Wheels, What A Blast, Mars Polaris - Deep Space Highway To Red Rocks Pavilion and Great Wall Of China (all 1999). The compilation contains no new material but might be interesting for those who do not own Ça Va - Ça Marche - Ça Ira Encore as it features two of the three tracks of that rare CD-5.

The original subtitle 'The World of Tangerine Dream' was changed to 'The Best of Tangerine Dream' just before the official release date. Another change was the replacement of the track 220 Volt by Flashflood a short time before release. The booklet contains information about neither the original composers nor the musicians involved; the subtitles of the remixed tracks are not mentioned in the track listing, but there are information from which album the tracks have been taken. The tracks originally released on the albums Optical Race, Lily On The Beach and Melrose are said to be taken from the compilations Atlantic Bridges and Atlantic Walls, respectively. The CD-5 Ça Va - Ça Marche - Ça Ira Encore is referenced as 'Dream Dice Bonus Track'.

Notes
TD's album The Seven Letters From Tibet was announced by TDI being "probably one of the most 'private' CD productions in the long history of Tangerine Dream. Recorded outside of their regular film and studio album work, this album reveals one of the more intimate sides of the band: a very inspired composition in seven parts that does not contain a single drumbeat or sequencer rhythm. Anyone seeking something out of the ordinary in music will be impressed by the relaxed power of this CD. Emotional coolness at its best." In fact, this album was mentioned for the first time back in 1998 in the booklet of the then re-released CD Quinoa as 'Tibetan Cycle', and Quinoa featured an excerpt of The Blue Pearl, titled Lhasa.

The track listing on the backside insert of the CD case is slightly different from the one in the booklet in that it lists three compositions with different titles. According to information from TDI the inner sleeve titles are wrong due to an error on the first pressing. These titles were actually old working titles for the tracks, and an older version of the inner sleeve was used by accident. This has been corrected for the second pressing.

In the booklet TD stated: "This recording is not supporting any kind of political party or idea. It is also not the composers' intention to support or criticise any kind of dialectical spiritual movement." Furthermore the booklet contains a rather esoteric essay saying: "There is a higher, unknown more absolute field of manifestation. It is impossible to enter this field as lung-breathing beings. If our state of nature is fundamentally violated, we cannot maintain ourselves. It is the same in the multitude of spaces in the all-revelation. It is utterly impossible to transfer a creature from its own natural space into another space which is not in agreement with its nature. One revelation is not compatible with another. The universal doctrine says that the original substance, both in this world and in the one above it, is sevenfold and that every situation and principle is divided by degrees into seven graduations of density and of nature. And so it goes on, until there is a, for us, unknown number of spaces within the original seven which in turn are to be considered as a unity. This unity, seen as a whole, reveals the entire universe. So there is not a single atom of empty space."

The official street day of the CD release was announced for September 2000, though some copies were available by June 2000.

Notes
On October 7th, 2001, Tangerine Dream gave two concerts in the St. Marien Church in Bernau, Germany. The music performed was called Inferno, being the first of a three part composition inspired by the Divina Commedia (Divine Comedy) by Dante Alighieri. The music was released on CD in March 2002 as a pre-release version available only via internet from the TDI site (packed together with a T-shirt) and selected mail order companies. The official store release was issued in summer 2002, featuring a slightly different cover artwork, including a barcode field that is missing on the pre-release copies. The second part of the trilogy, Purgatorio, has been released in 2004.

The material on the record is rather identical to the music played in Bernau, though some slight overdubs have been obviously made. The original, untouched concert (taken from a minidisc audience recording) has been fan-released as Tangerine Tree Volume 3: Bernau 2001.
