Although she was a powerful blues guitarist, songwriter, and singer, Deborah Coleman got her first inspiration from an unlikely place: seeing the pop group the Monkees on TV. Born in Portsmouth, Virginia and raised in a military family, Coleman took to music easily enough, since her dad played piano, two brothers played guitar, and a sister played guitar and keyboards. She picked up the guitar at age eight after seeing the Monkees and began to play professionally at 15, playing bass with a series of Portsmouth-area R&B and rock bands. She later switched to guitar after hearing Jimi Hendrix, also taking to James Brown and the Beatles. Coleman began buying records by blues-rock groups like Cream and Led Zeppelin, and slowly followed the music's origins back to basic blues.

When she was 25, she got married and focused on raising her daughter while working day jobs as a nurse and electrician. After her daughter was old enough to leave home alone, Coleman began to play out again, locally at first. In 1985, she began working with an all-female group, Moxxie. When that group split up in 1988, she got her blues chops together as part of an R&B trio. After two years of touring with the trio, Coleman did some woodshedding, seeing as many blues acts as she could live and studying blues recordings. She got the break she was looking for in 1993 when she entered the Charleston (South Carolina) Blues Festival's National Talent Search. Leading her own band, she took first place. She immediately put together her own touring group, the Thrillseekers, and began a solo career as a bandleader.

Coleman used her contest prize of free studio time to record a demo and secure a record deal with New Moon Records out of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Her debut, Takin' a Stand, was released in 1995 on that label, and she followed it up two years later with I Can't Lose, her first album for Blind Pig. Coleman returned in 1998 with Where Blue Begins; Soft Place to Fall followed in the spring of 2000. She released her fifth album for Blind Pig, Livin' on Love, in 2001, further consolidating her position as one of the top active blueswomen. Making this designation somewhat official, Coleman won the Orville Gibson Award for "Best Blues Guitarist, Female" in 2001. She was also nominated for a W.C. Handy Award for the fourth time. Released in 2002, Soul Be It was her last record for Blind Pig, as 2004's What About Love? appeared on Coleman's new home, Telarc. Stop the Game and Time Bomb (the latter a collaboration with Sue Foley and Roxanne Potvin) followed in 2007. Sadly, complications from pneumonia and bronchitis led to Coleman's death in April 2018 at the age of 61.

Deborah Coleman's 1994 debut is an extremely hard to find CD as it was done for small label. For fans of Coleman, it is worth seeking out though. Her style at this time not yet fully formed, there's a lot of worthwhile music here with most of it written by Coleman.She would go on to top this effort, without question. However, even a Deborah Coleman still learning the ropes is much better than just about every other artist. Fans will love this.

Deborah Coleman is a double rarity in the male-dominated world of contemporary blues: she's a female lead singer who's not imitating the bellowing "blues mama" persona so familiar to the genre, and she's one hell of a lead guitar player. Featuring Luther Allison's backing band, Where Blue Begins is a smooth blend of Coleman's furious fretwork and pussycat purr of a voice. Coleman's slide shreds up "Goodbye Misery," while her buoyant licks carry the Texas blues of "Travelin' South." Even when her lyrics come close to cliché, like on "Beside Myself" and "Hain't It Funny," she saves the songs with some wicked playing and her Joan Armatrading vocal stylings. This album proves Coleman's not a novelty but a rare talent in a genre that desperately needs some new blood.

For her third recording, Coleman continues to show the promise that her previous CDs gave a glimpse of. While still not as much of a blues devotee as she could be, she gives all indications of being a solid performer, a steadily improving vocalist, and a decent guitarist. She wrote three of the 11 cuts here, and they're the best of the lot. "What Goes Around" is a good 12-bar tune about cheatin' and messin' around; "Another Hoping Fool" is a slinky blues number about waiting by the telephone for that reassuring late-night call; and the title track sounds much like a Dire Straits tune, especially in the spare guitar playing of Coleman and Jack Holder. Coleman interprets Little Johnny Taylor's "If You Love Me Like You Say" in a cool funk mode, jumps into the direct blues of the adapted classic "I'm a Woman," and rocks the Jerry Williams number "Nothin' to Do With Love," which has all the potential to be a legitimate hit. On the boogie beat of "Don't Lie to Me" and the hard swing of the getting-back-to-love statement "So Damn Easy," Coleman changes up a bit to a more authentic blues style. She rocks on the simple "Look What You Do to Me," rocks even harder for "Confused," and goes into a more Southern-rock area on "The Day It Comes." She also uses pop/R&B-ish background vocals on "Look What You Do," "The Day," and "So Damn Easy." Deborah Coleman is still on the trail of eclipsing Sue Foley, Debbie Davies, and Susan Tedeschi to take her place as the high priestess of contemporary blues. While not there yet, she has all the tools and musical ability to reach that lofty perch.

Deborah Coleman detected a void in the music stratum and successfully filled it: A lead guitarist/vocalist playing the in the male dominated world of blues-rock. Others like Bonnie Raitt and Marie Muldaur have contributed to varying degrees in the contemporary blues scene (and other styles) but Coleman with her string of five consistently strong albums in only seven years demonstrates that she is serious about her craft and knows her calling as a blueswoman. Livin' on Love combines slow-grind blues pieces, R&B and gutsy rockers with a soulful voice and exemplary guitar playing proving that she's here to stay, not merely passing through.

A powerful guitarist and an expressive vocalist, Deborah Coleman is a major force in the blues world. On Soul Be It, a well-rounded live set by her quartet, there are many highlights, including the rousing opener ("Brick"), the minor-toned blues "My Heart Bleeds Blue," the bluish romp "Don't Lie to Me," and a jump blues, "I Believe." However the most memorable selection is "Goodbye Misery," which has a marathon solo by Coleman that is full of fire and creative ideas. This highly enjoyable set serves as a perfect introduction to the music of Coleman.

On her seventh release after a productive five-year, five-album affiliation with Blind Pig, singer/songwriter/guitarist Deborah Coleman shifts gears slightly for her Telarc label debut. Producer Randy Labbe emphasizes Coleman's expressive voice – sounding somewhat like a combination of Tracy Chapman and Joan Armatrading – over her formidable guitar chops. It's a savvy move, and results in one of her most relaxed and commercial outings. Shifting from straight blues to a more laid-back (but still invigorating) R&B approach allows Coleman room to explore the previously rather limited range of her expressive velvety vocals. A cover of the Everly Brothers' chestnut "When Will I Be Loved?" refashioned as a peppy shuffle doesn't really click, but her fiery take on Delbert McClinton's "Lie No Better" – although it pales next to Etta James' version – effectively frames Coleman's intentions. Better still is the low-boil J.J. Cale-styled swamp of her original "The River Wild," a sensuous, peaceful, beautifully recorded and arranged instrumental with a light funk undertow that unexpectedly explodes in a raw guitar blast. The restrained yet fiery groove is prevalent throughout, kicked off by the biting original "Bad Boy." The closing "A Woman in Love," written by Bill Chinnock, captures the singer's soulful yet steely side, wrapping up a wholly successful project that effectively capitalizes on Deborah Coleman's strongest talents – sultry vocals and short, succinct guitar solos – and is arguably better than her previous albums that were more oriented toward blues-rock.

Guitarist Deborah Coleman plays blues informed by classic rock, with a deft, melodic hand and a deep, throaty voice that ranges from sobbing sorrow to a tough growl. This 2007 release doesn't stray far from her usual MO, but offers the same high-quality playing and singing. Highlights include album-closer "Wagon Wheel," a frisky number with a Western swing bounce.

After a couple year layoff, Deborah Coleman comes back with a really strong release. A hard rocking set, this features a couple of instrumentals- one in a country blues vein. The "Changes" is a cover of Buddy Miles "Them Changes" and it is a good one. Very good CD here and this should please fans of modern blues.
