Known for the huge hit "American Pie", which earned him the number one American for four weeks in 1972 and in other English-speaking countries, the composer Don McLean (born Donald McLean III in New Rochelle, New York, on October 2, 1945) saw his songs covered by Elvis Presley and Madonna. The track "Vincent", a tribute to the painter Vincent Van Gogh ranked No. 12 on Billboard the same year, is another classic of his repertoire between folk, rock and soft rock of the 1970s. Coming from the folk bars of the 1960s, Don McLean released his first album Tapestry in 1970 and modestly continued to work his art after the tidal wave of "American Pie" (admitted to the posterity of the National Recording Registry in 2017), over lesser-known albums. In 1973, Playin ' Favorites was dedicated to covers. The following albums Homeless Brother (1974), Solo (1976), Prime Time (1977) and Chain Lightning (1978), including his version of Roy Orbison's "Crying" ranked No. 1 in the UK and No. 5 in his country, met with esteemed success. His career ended after the recording of Believers (1981), only to resume six years later with the album Love Tracks. He returned to For the Memories (1989) and signed with independent label Curb Records in 1991 for the Christmas album Christmas and Headroom, released the same year and followed in 1995 by The River of Love.
