When Bishop played guitar with Paul Butterfield in the 1960s he fancied himself a countrified hippie named Pig Boy Cranshaw. His sense of humor remains intact decades later, evidenced on a relaxed blues-oriented rock program shot through with a smart sort of bumpkin levity. He never could sing (it was Mickey Thomas on his 1970s smash "Fooled Around and Fell in Love"), but his guitar rides roughshod over those of many a better-known blues artist.Review by Frank John Hadley, From Grove Press Guide to Blues on CD
In the 10 years between the release of Hog Heaven and this comeback record, Elvin Bishop was represented in record stores by a Best Of on Capricorn and an album released only in Germany (Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby? on Line Records). Then he signed with Bruce Iglauer's independent blues label Alligator and made this record, which, naturally, emphasizes his more blues-oriented guitar playing, although without sacrificing his country boy identity. Dr. John tickles some of the ivories, and harmonica player Norton Buffalo (of Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen) also guests.Review by William Ruhlmann, Allmusic.com
