2010 CD reissue of this 1976 album from the famed composer. Americans is a personal impression of the sights and sounds of the United States; it is also his first music written specifically for an album (as opposed to pop songs or film scores).
So you think you know John Barry? Out of Africa, Dances With Wolves, Born Free, Bond … Think again! Better still, buy this album and listen. I bought the vinyl album back in 1976 and it took a while for the music to win me over because this wasn't the John Barry I knew.
After 30+ years I know the music like the back of my hand but it was a wonderful pleasure to hear it - afresh - in clear CD sound. There are hints of his film scores from that era (e.g. The Man With The Golden Gun and Day Of The Locust) but this is Mr. Barry in free-flow.
Gorgeous, simply gorgeous.
The four bonus tracks from his "Play It Again" sessions are fine but out of place on this album and I recommend you programme them out to play at another time. All excellent … but not part of "Americans".M. Castle, Amazon.co.uk
One of the best remastered John Barry Polydor albums.
This album was a real LP collector item and now you can have it on CD with som bonus tracks from other Polydor re-recorded filmmusic titles from older LP-albums: Orson Welles' great mysteries; The Dove; Follow Me; The Adventurer.
All together wonderfull music from John Barry with a very dynamic good sound. The music should be well known by all Barry fans, - but if not - the American album is not filmmusic. This is a symphonic jazz-suite of the best from the composer. Many years later John Barry did something similar for Decca records. But The Americans recording is the best non-filmmmusic from this composer.
If you are a Barry fan you have to have this album and if not you must have it if you like jazz music. This is recordings made 1972/74/76 but still clean as the day they were recorded in Hollywood and in London.
