This is a fabulous release with two albums from Shirley and Dolly Collins recorded on Harvest records and collected together.
CD one brings us the album Anthems in Eden.
Anthems in Eden is perhaps the most famous album and the most creative one from Shirley and Dolly Collins.
This sixth album from Shirley is from 1969 and it is an incredible project. The album has been released and re released a few times.
Here on this fabulous album Shirley provides her unique vocals along with Sister Dolly on portative organ. But this time there are a whole host of other musicians involved.
There is the Early Music Consort of London with David Munrow. They provide early music instruments such as viols, recorders, rebec,cornett, sackbuts and crumhorns. Also present in the ensemble is Christopher Hogwood on Harpsichord (later with the Academy of Ancient Music,)
The original album had eight tracks recorded in 1969 with track one being a suite that lasts 28 minutes long.
The original suite called A song Story depicts the changes in rural England brought about by World War One and the disconnection this created with folk traditions. Maypoles were replaced with memorials for example, The use of early instruments became an influence on other bands in interpreting folk music.
This is a unique beautiful gem of a folk album and a landmark recording in British Folk music.
Disc one continues with out takes from the next album Love death and the lady.
Disc two has the original album Love Death and the Lady.
Love Death and the Lady is the seventh album by Shirley Collins and once again credited to Shirley and Dolly Collins.
This album is a great album. There is a beauty in the sound of the project. It is very much a companion to the previous album Anthems in Eden but with a much more darker side.
Many of the same musicians are present on this recording providing a similar sound to the previous album. Although the feature of long instrumental sections that had appeared on the previous album do not appear much here.
There seems to be a theme of murder and death, class conflict and betrayal. The track the outlandish Knight for example features a serial killer. And the track Oxford girl is about a murder of a woman by her erstwhile lover.
Dolly plays flute organ and piano. Christopher Hogwood (later of the Academy of Ancient Music) provides harpsichord accompaniment again. Also present is Terry Cox from Pentangle on understated percussion. The other performers on early instruments provide a similar sound to the previous album.
The album was produced by Shirley’s then husband Austin John Marshall. The marriage didn’t last and later she married Ashley Hutchings.
The arrangements often sound strained as if the vocals and instrumentation are in a miss matched key. This is not a bad thing it is just the unique sound of the album that relies on a darker theme than the previous album. The songs are Traditional and carefully selected.
The album is most original and a good addition to British Folk music recordings. It is defiantly one to collect.
Disc two continues with tracks recorded in 1976 to add to a re release of the album Anthems in Eden.
In 1976 a further six tracks were recorded with musicians mainly from the Albion Band. The original Suite on the A side and the new tracks on the B side. This was given a new title of Amaranth. Then the CD version came out in the 1990s with all of the tracks under the original title Anthems in Eden. This new set included musicians such as Simon Nicol on acoustic and electric guitar, Dave Mattacks on regal and drums, John Sothcott on vielle and recorder,
John Kirkpatrick on accordion and melodeon, Ashley Hutchings on acoustic and electric bass guitar, and Christopher Hogwood on Virginals to name just a few.
The Albion Morris Men provide chorus and bells too.
Disc two contuse with a track from the Ashley Hutchings project Morris on, and a track from The prospect before us by the Albion Band both featuring Shirley Collins.
This makes for a great collection in one release and a great way to get the albums Anthems in Eden, Amaranth and Love death and the lady.
