Everone can use a little electric (or electronic) violin in their life, and Jean-Luc Ponty is perhaps the best way to experience it. Brief stints with Mahavishnu Orchestra and Frank Zappa led to Ponty's own brand of jazz fusion, which gave equal time to synthesizers in the '80s. His Atlantic output is of a piece, ebullient music that features the violin atop percolating patterns. In the '90s, world music caught his attention and signalled a change in direction. I can't tell you why some consider Ponty progressive and not Chick Corea, although packaging might have something to do with it.

Johnny Burnette is a legend to many rock & roll fans, but his legend is one that is not widely known, since his groundbreaking rockabilly sides of the late '50s weren't hits outside of the South and the hits that he had in the early '60s were as a sweet, slick teen idol. "You're Sixteen" is a long way away from the wild, careening rockabilly of "The Train Kept a-Rollin'," the best-known song that Burnette and the Rock & Roll Trio recorded for Coral Records during the '50s.

    EAC (APE & CUE) | Classical | 1 CD | 236 MB
    _____________________

So much attention has gone to Thomas Adès’s prodigious gift as a composer that it is easy to forget that he is one of the most accomplished and complete musicians of his generation. In this new EMI Classics recording, Adès’s impressive skills shine through as a pianist in collaboration with two London-based string quartets. He plays his own Piano Quintet, composed in 2001, with the Arditti Quartet and Schubert’s popular “Trout” Quintet with three members of the Belcea Quartet and the double bassist Corin Long.

The Greek synth king is back after a lengthy hiatus, but he hasn't learned many new variations on the Cosmos-Chariots of Fire riffs he patented 15 years ago. The ridiculously overblown title track verges on self-parody, and five other instrumentals meander aimlessly. Only the unearthly vocals of Stina Nordenstam and Caroline Levell on “Ask The Mountains,” and “Come To Me,” respectively, penetrate the velvety new age fog. – Jeff Bateman
