Disco / Funk

As late as 2011, when the PTG label released the seventh volume of its Disco Giants series, the number of quality compilations focusing on mid- to late-'80s club-oriented R&B was quite low. While Disco Giants, Vol. 7 does contain a handful of tracks from the early '80s – such as the original mix of Central Line's classic "Walking Into Sunshine – its selections are 85-percent 1984-1987. Oran "Juice" Jones' "The Rain" is the only major crossover track; otherwise, the set spotlights a number of cuts that received plenty of play in clubs, including Wally Badarou's instrumental "Chief Inspector" (the "Green Onions" of its day), Pennye Ford's "Dangerous," Paul Hardcastle's "Just for Money," and Yarbrough & Peoples' "I Wouldn't Lie" (a decent emulation of the sound popularized by the S.O.S. Band with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis). Again, this stuff was too late to be accurately termed disco, but it's all part of the disco continuum.

Similar to the preceding seven volumes of the PTG label's Disco Giants series, volume eight is a two-disc package of '80s club-oriented R&B and dance-pop, with major hits, second-tier selections, and a handful of relative obscurities provided in extended 12"-single form (with few exceptions). Among the more popular selections here are Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam's "Head to Toe," Johnny Kemp's "Just Got Paid," Rick James' "Give It to Me Baby," Aretha Franklin's Luther Vandross-produced "Jump to It," and Alisha's "Baby Talk." There are a couple stellar must-own ballads from 1986 in Surface's "Happy" and 52nd Street's "Tell Me (How It Feels)" – the latter a production from the unsung Nick Martinelli (Fat Larry's Band, Five Star, Loose Ends), provided in its previously hard to find seven-minute mix. Yvonne Gage wins best title with "Doin' It in a Haunted House," a track that owes a whole lot to Michael Jackson's "Thriller."

Disco / Funk

Over half of the 20 tracks on PTG's ninth Disco Giants compilation were released in 1986 or 1987, just before journalist Barry Michael Cooper – inspired by Teddy Riley's 1987/1988 production work for the likes of Keith Sweat, Johnny Kemp, Today, and Guy – coined the term new jack swing. In fact, five of the tracks came out on MCA, just before Guy debuted on the same label in 1988. It's Riley progenitors Kashif, Paul Laurence, and Morrie Brown, however, who dominate this set with their actual presence. During the early '80s, Kashif and company perfected their own form of sophisticated, electronics-enhanced, groove-oriented R&B, though their sound had little to do with hip-hop. Some of their fine if less-recognized work circa 1982 – Howard Johnson's "Keeping Love New," Melba Moore's "Mind Up Tonight," Evelyn King's "Back to Love" – is featured here. Stephanie Mills' "(You're Puttin') A Rush On Me," produced by Laurence, is among the best of the 1987 material beside the Whispers' L.A. Reid and Babyface collaboration "Rock Steady." Another nice mix of major and minor hits, this volume is also highlighted by Loose Ends' "Magic Touch," Gwen Guthrie's "Ain't Nothin' Goin' On But the Rent" (the Larry Levan mix), and Sybil's "Falling in Love" (an unjustly forgotten Next Plateau release).

Disco / Funk

Disco Giants' tenth volume offers up another two-disc assortment of tracks that date from the post-disco era. More specifically, this compilation is heavy on mid- to late-'80s R&B from 1984 through 1987. As usual for the PTG label's releases, sound quality varies from track to track. This is ideal for listeners who are gathering basics and beginning to dig beneath them. Among the highlights are Val Young's Rick James-produced "Seduction," Jody Watley's "Don't You Want Me," Cameo's "Back & Forth," and a pair of Tabu label singles: Cherrelle's "I Didn't Mean to Turn You On" and Kathy Mathis' "Baby I'm Hooked."
