    Nick Drake’s debut album Five Leaves Left will be issued as a four-disc box set called The Making Of Five Leaves Left, in July. The album was released by Island Records in 1969 and was produced by Joe Boyd. The new box sets comes in 4CD and 4LP vinyl variants (identical tracklistings) and include unaccompanied demos, studio outtakes and previously unheard songs. There’s over 30 previously unheard outtakes, in total. The whole set has been mastered by John Wood.

    At the time of its release, Nick Drake's debut album was barely noticed, but over the ensuing decades, it has grown into a central text for modern singer-songwriters and sad boys alike. Melding literary introspection, intricate guitar work, and subtle orchestral arrangements, Five Leaves Left presented an aesthetic that seemed to emerge fully formed from an ethereal otherworld. It was, in fact, the product of hard work and creative evolution. From an early age, Drake showed precocious talent as a musician, writer, and athlete, and he later won a scholarship to Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. Though he rarely attended lectures and became increasingly withdrawn during his university years, that time was pivotal, as it was there that he met arranger Robert Kirby, a classically trained student who would go on to orchestrate much of Five Leaves Left and its follow-up, Bryter Layter, with chamber-style arrangements that were a remarkable complement to Drake's introspective songwriting.

    During his time at Cambridge, Drake was also in contact with producer Joe Boyd, the head of Witchseason Productions (Fairport Convention, The Incredible String Band), who not only got him signed to Island Records, but also sat in the producers' chair for Five Leaves Left. Sessions for the album began in 1968—when Drake was just 20 years old—at Sound Techniques in London, a favored studio of the British folk-rock scene, and they were slow and occasionally tense. Not only was most of Five Leaves Left recorded with Drake singing and playing along with the string section, but his unique personality—both perfectionist and shy—required plenty of patience from everyone involved. Present during the sessions were fellow Witchseason compatriots John and Beverley Martyn, a husband and wife duo who were both enraptured by Drake's talent and eager to encourage—and protect—him. Although it took nearly a year to complete the recording, Island surprisingly did little to promote it, and coupled with Drake's refusal to tour, meant that it only gained some quiet admiration among critics and fellow musicians upon its initial release.

    This long-overdue box set tastefully curates a story about the album's genesis. While there have been occasional non-album cuts that have appeared on compilations over the years, The Making of Five Leaves Left presents the album alongside an expanded and mindfully organized selection of home demos, studio outtakes, and alternate takes. Kicking off with the legendary "Beverley Martyn reel"—a selection of recordings from the first sessions at Sound Techniques given to her a few years after Drake's death—the set opens quite dramatically with "Mayfair," one of Drake's most legendary non-album tracks. Lacking the full orchestration of the final album but still boasting incredible fidelity, "Mayfair" and the other five songs (including another legendary lost cut, "Strange Face"—a proto-version of "Cello Song") from this session present a believable alternate vision of what Five Leaves Left could have been: an interesting, if not altogether special, recording of a talented singer-songwriter.

    As Drake continues to work through the material in additional 1968 studio sessions, demos recorded in his Cambridge dorm (decidedly less high-fidelity, but no less revelatory) and then with multiple takes of nearly all of the album's songs, you can hear the album's—and Drake's—identity come into sharper focus. Hearing this development adds considerable dimensions, and also does a bit of welcome myth-busting. It presents Drake as an inquisitive, open-minded, and driven musician trying to hone his voice, rather than as some sad, ethereal angel who just fell to Earth. That humanity was what made—and continues to make—Nick Drake such a captivating musician, and this set is an excellent and admirable reflection of that very musician.
