Tangerine Tree was a project from 2002 through 2006 that was dedicated to the collection, preservation and distribution of unreleased concerts and other audio material by the band Tangerine Dream. The creators of the Tangerine Tree project received permission from Tangerine Dream to release the collection on a strict non-profit basis. Several of the Tangerine Tree volumes have been used as the basis for official Tangerine Dream releases. The project collected just under 300 hours of material (291:39:26).

Material was collected from audience recordings, soundboard recordings, recordings of radio and TV transmissions and in some cases the purchase of studio masters. Only recordings of a high quality and a unique nature were considered for the core Tangerine Tree volumes. These recordings were professionally re-mastered and released on CD-R and accompanied by high quality artwork for the CD labels and case liners.

Notes
Tangerine Tree Volume 37: Sydney 1982 presents a quite popular radio broadcast which was in parts previously released on bootlegs. It was recorded during the Peter Stuyvesant Festival in Sydney on February 22nd, 1982. The recording quality is excellent in most places and an improvement compared to all existent bootlegs. The first part this concert was already officially released by TD as Sohoman (1999), but that version was heavily overdubbed.

The four concerts Tangerine Dream played during their Australia tour had a tracklist different from that in laste 1981 and late 1982, including all four compositions from the then brand new album White Eagle.

This release made the bootleg Leprous Appearance On Wednesday / Dreaming obsolete, which consists of the first set from the same concert, but of much less excellent sound quality.

This album has been officially re-released as Sydney - February 22nd 1982.

Notes
Tangerine Tree Volume 38: Berlin 1987 starts the fifth set of the Tangerine Tree series. This is the legendary last performance with Chris Franke – the real Livemiles concert, of which only a 27 minute long, remixed excerpt is featured on the official album from 1988). The recording is in excellent FM broadcast quality. Part of the concert is quite similar to the gigs played during the 1986 tours (especially the compositions taken from the albums Le Parc and Underwater Sunlight), but there are a number of compositions that were played live only on this very concert, including the rare Dolphin Smile and the instrumental version of Smile.

This release made the bootleg 20th Century Serenades and part of Antarktis obsolete, which consist of material from the same concert, but of less excellent sound quality.

Notes
In June 1983 Tangerine Dream performed four concerts in Japan, one of them is featured on Tangerine Tree Volume 40: Tokyo 1983, another on Tangerine Tree Volume 64: Osaka 1983. The music performed was a unique mixture of material from Exit (1981), White Eagle, Logos Live (both 1982) and Poland (1984). The sound quality of this audience recording is very good, with only a few drop outs.

Disc 2 features five more live excerpts: Magnetic Winds (Berlin, October 13th, 1974), Black Sun (Les Ponts de Cé, May 20th, 1973, already released on Tangerine Leaves Volume 17: Les Ponts de Cé 1973), Perihelion (London, October 22nd, 1975), Echodrive Galaxy (Brighton, October 10th, 1976), and Shadowplay (Hanover, October 20th, 1976).

Notes
Finally, Tangerine Tree Volume 42: New Haven 1988 presents the long overdue remaster of the excellent soundboard recording that was previouly released on several bootlegs, including Spherical Harmonics One, which now is obsolete.

The sound quality is nearly on par with the official release Rockface that features another concert of the same tour but is missing a few minutes of music that are present on this fan release.

In June 1999, Tangerine Dream performed a one-off concert during the Klangart Festival in Osnabrück in Northern Germany, presenting the then brand-new album Mars Polaris - Deep Space Highway To Red Rocks Pavilion. The complete album was performed, though the track order differs from that on the album. The music performed is essentially identical to the studio versions, with some additional guitar and percussion work. Some older compositions were included in the main set and the encores.

Notes
Tangerine Tree Volume 44: Toronto 1986 features one more concert from the 1986 North American tour. The music is quite similar to that of the other shows of that tour, of which some are already released as Tangerine Tree or Tangerine Dream releases. But this record features a unique, officially unreleased composition that was performed on this concert only. It is titled Fantasy Fair on this release but known by the name Vondelpark on some previously released bootlegs. The composition is stylistically similar to Dolphin Dance with heavier percussions, and it features a unique guitar solo by Edgar Froese.

Notes
Tangerine Tree Volume 48: Melbourne 1982, the last CD of the fifth set of the Tangerine Tree series presents another FM broadcast recording from the 1982 Australian tour, quite similar to Tangerine Tree Volume 37: Sydney 1982. Unfortunataly, this radio broadcast only featured the second set of the concert, so the first set is completely missing on this release.
