The music
There's no common genre in which Kaizers Orchestra's music fits. "Officially" one could characterize the music als "norwegian polka", because there's "ompa" in it, a nordic style of music that would probably be called "polka" here in Germany. But no - the Kaizers music doesn't really have anything to do with that… Kaizers Orchestra themselves call their music "Kaizerrock", I guess they haven't found a proper category either… =;-)
From the traditional part of the instrumentation it is obvious that their music is indeed rock-music. Additionally, the six musicians pound furiously at oil barrels and steel rims, which of course intensifies the rhythm and releases a lot of energy. And that's exactly the special thing about Kaizers: the energy. The musicians give everything on stage, the show is perfect, and the fun and energy spreads to everyone in the audience. But also on CD the music is just spellbinding.

There’s no conventional way to describe the music of Norwegian six-piece Kaizer's Orchestra sounds. The band’s name gives one insight, they’re definitely an orchestra of some kind, albeit a completely unheard of kind. Their sound is typified by a mix of alley-pan drums, raucous horns and dirty jazz guitar. The band’s website takes a wild stab at classifying the sex-piece, announcing: “Their style of music is rock, with a major Eastern European flavour, à la Tom Waits.” If nothing else, they’re cultured. The website spiel goes on to declare: “The line-up features drums and electric guitar, which goes without saying, plus double bass, a pump organ and oil barrels plus whatever junk they find along the way.” If nothing else, they’re slightly insane.

Anja Garbarek is the daughter of Jan Garbarek. Her music has nothing in common with her daddy's. Balloon Mood is a very disturbing album with weird soundscapes, mystic rhythms, and strange vocal effects. It's not possible to categorize the album. It can partly be compared with Kym Brown, PJ Harvey, Björk, Happy Rhodes (particularly Many Worlds Are Born Tonight and Equipoise), KaTe (The Dreaming), and Massive Attack. The music is pure electronic, programmed by Marius de Vries (producer) and Anja Garbarek. After the first listen I was kind of paralyzed and I'm sure that I can listen to it a hundred times without ever getting bored.
