    A cheesy cover, but a really wonderful little compilation – a set that's filled with obscure righteous soul tunes from the 70s, including some lesser-known cuts by bigger name acts of the time! The vibe here is really wonderful – definitely the kind of kicked-back soul you might listen to on a Sunday afternoon – not as uptight as tracks for the clubs the night before, and rolling out with a sound that's warm and mellow, but still with a bit of groove at the bottom. Most numbers are of mid 70s vintage.

    The title of this short album "Fais Que Ton Rêve Soit Plus Long Que La Nuit" translates as "make your dream last longer than the night". It is sub-titled "Poème Symphonique" which in turn refers to a genre of composition created by Franz Liszt in his mid 19th-century Weimar years, also taken up by Dvorak late in life and as a music form perfected by Richard Strauss before switching to opera. Unlike earlier genres, it had no fixed form or duration and was basically a vehicle for expressing some extra-musical idea or event, usually from the world of heroic literature, without using actual texts as in opera.

    Tenor saxophonist Teddy Edwards and trumpeter Howard McGhee had played together regularly during 1945-47. For their recorded reunion, they are assisted by the masterful pianist Phineas Newborn, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen. Edwards, McGhee and Brown contributed one new song apiece which alternates with a trio of standards ("You Stepped Out of a Dream," "Misty" and Charlie Parker's "Perhaps"). The trumpeter was having a short-lived comeback at the time and he had largely regained his earlier form. Edwards sounds as strong as ever and Newborn was an up-and-coming talent. Their collaboration for this boppish date (reissued on CD) is generally quite memorable.
