Buddy Rich – Tuff Dude (1974) (Denon)

Buddy Rich – Tuff Dude (1974) (Denon)

This is a good live septet session recorded at Buddy's Place in the early 1970's. Rich's drumming is so powerful on the opener, "Donna Lee', that he virtually renders the sax soloist superfluous, as Buddy and Anthony Jackson could have carried the tune on their own. "Chameleon" finds him also pushing the band from behind, though the funky electric wah-wah on Jack Wilkins' guitar chords offers a stronger counterweight. Unfortunately, this track ends in a truncated fashion after only about 4 minutes of grooving. The recording is also a little murkier than the best technology of the day might have offered. Nevertheless, there are solos from Wilkins, Kenny Barron, Sonny Fortune, and Sal Nistico worth hearing, in addition to the leader's virtuoso performance.

In the decades since Charlie Parker's death in 1955, his name has become so synonymous with compilations and newly uncovered live dates–there have been literally hundreds of releases around the world–that coming across a studio album that was actually released during his lifetime feels almost strange. 1952/53's NOW'S THE TIME is an all-time jazz classic, possibly the finest studio sets of Parker's career. Parker's alto playing is in full bop mode, largely avoiding the blues side of his musical personality in favor of tricky, complex solo passages. Yet Parker plays with such a fine combination of grace and passion that NOW'S THE TIME lacks the abstract, cerebral quality that marks many bop dates. This Verve reissue contains five alternate takes, including a fiery, previously unreleased, run-through of "Chi Chi."

The "Wiener Streichquartett" remained in its first successful form until 1926. After that, three musicians joined the ensemble in the course of a year, whom Kolisch himself described as the "definitive" members of the quartet: Felix Khuner, second violin, Eugene Lehner, viola, and Benar Heifetz, violoncello. In his letters to Schoenberg, Kolisch raved over the tireless enthusiasm with which his young quartet colleagues studied the repertoire… Eugene Lehner describes it "When Heifetz and I joined the quartet, the whole day was one rehearsal. We met at about ten o'clock in the morning in Mama Kolisch's apartment, and practiced till late in the evening…. When rehearsing, whether alone or in the presence of the composer, the idea of time never came into anyone's head. What could anyone do other than play quartets?"

Wow. I dug this CD out of my collection today and had another listen, and I'm sure glad I did. Today's jazz is all over the place, with different jazz styles and a lot of indifferent playing as well. But this recording is the work of 2 masters of their instruments. Swinging, bluesy and melodic, all of the tunes are on a such a high level. It is a delight to listen to, and never gets stale. Anyone can swing and play a lot of notes, but it takes a real master to play ballads. Ben Webster's playing on this recording is at the very highest level ever recorded. He's authoritative, bluesy, and seductive. This music has a quality you just don't hear anymore in today's jazz. It comes from an era (1959) when all of the very best jazz musicians were alive at the same time, competing for an audience and listening to each other's recordings.
Whether you are a collector, or just a listener who appreciates great music, get this album.
