The two greatest big bands in jazz history side by side on your headphones: What can be more glorious? If, as Billy Strayhorn said, Duke Ellington's band was his instrument, then this 1961 session finds Ellington and Count Basie "trading fours" as it were. The composer credits and solo space are divided democratically, four songs from Duke's camp, four from Basie's. The sparring between soloists of both bands is a pure delight, especially the gentle conversations between the two leaders-pianists, who finish each other's thoughts as if all four hands were attached to one unified torso. Highlights include two engaging new Duke compositions, the blistering opener "Battle Royal" and the impulsive "Wild Man" and the closing Basie chestnut "Jumpin' at the Woodside," on which the lead tenors Frank Foster and Paul Gonsalves engage in ferocious dueling. Amazingly, there is no toe-stepping amid the rousing interplay.

Pianist Bryant (along with bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Freddie Waits) performs four songs associated with Count Basie (including Neal Hefti's obscure "Teddy The Toad"), his own "Blues For Basie," five Duke Ellington tunes (including a three-song ballad medley) and Mercer Ellington's "Things Ain't What They Used To Be." Although it is a shame that ("Teddy" excepted) Bryant stuck to fairly obvious material (particularly on the Ellington half of the program), his typically swinging and soulful renditions are always fun to hear.

This Pablo recording from 1976 represents a new revitilised Basie band. After some years of having almost not recorded at all, due to problems with stable personnel, William Basie at this time has found a new drummer, Butch Miles and a new arranger, Bill Holman, who was asked to write charts especially for this project. Because of this, these recordings are a pleasant breakaway from a long tradition of using the Sammy Nestico charts over and over again. And what a talent this Basie band has in its ranks: Sonny Cohn and the sparkling Bobby Mitchell provide the trumpet solos, in the trombone department you`ll hear the one and only plunger specialist Al Grey, supported by Curtis Fuller and Bill Hughes. Of course the star soloist of the band is still there playing with the reeds: Jimmy Forrest, with his fat, gutty attack on the tenorsax. Besides the brilliant new scores on this album, Holman arranged two famous standards for Basie, `Something To Live For` and `Too Close For Comfort`. In listening to them, you get almost the feeling that Basie`s third Atomic period had started. Definitely a Basie for your collection at home.

Ry Cooder's name has helped bring attention to this session, but it's the veteran Cuban son musicians who make this album really special. Reminiscent of Ellington in its scope and sense of hushed romanticism, Buena Vista Social Club is that rare meld of quietude and intensity; while the players sound laid-back, they're putting forth very alive music, a reminder that aging doesn't mean taking to bed. Barbarito Torres's laoud solo on "El Cuarto de Tula" is both more blinding and more tasteful than any guitar showcase on any recent rock album; a quote from "Stormy Weather" and some very distinct parallels to Hawaiian styles remind us of why it's called "world music." –Rickey Wright

Baldassare Galuppi and Carlo Goldoni were the mid-century power team for Italian opera buffa. And in this recording, one can see why. The singers are active participants in the music- and drama-making, rather than just "phoning it in" (which so often happens in early comic opera). The characters are vivid, enhanced by the orchestra's spritely accompaniment on period instruments.(...)

40th anniversary edition of this seminal album released by Rhino as 2 CD set with superb artwork and complete mega booklet. The first CD contains the original album newly remastered, and though there is no indication that better quality tapes were used there's still a notable improvement from the 2001 expanded edition, at least some little sound glitches are no longer here. But the highlight is the second CD with an alternate mix of the whole album plus 10 bonus tracks between outtakes, demos and singles. This alternate mix dates from the original sessions, giving to the tracks a greater historical value; they contrast nicely with the original mix, the sound is punchier, with more vocal clarity and better bass definition. The bonus tracks are also excellent, although some were already in the previous edition. Despite the high quality of this release I think it is far from being considered as the definitive edition of this classic album; for this Rhino should have done a triple CD containing the hard to find mono mix ... maybe for the 50th anniversary edition?.
