Having made an enormous contribution to the establishment of the Nashville Sound and the modernisation of country music, Anita Kerr felt the need to expand her artistic horizons and in 1965, made the move from Nashville to Hollywood. She wanted to work with different people, to get her own songs recorded, to play jazz, to conduct an orchestra, to take on more ambitious and more varied projects musically, and to form a vocal group which, rather than be confined to studio sessions, might also appear in club and concert settings.

Her arrival on the West Coast was well timed. She had just fought off The Beatles to win a Grammy for the album We Dig Mancini and she was quickly able to assemble a stellar Anita Kerr Singers (B.J Baker: alto, Gene Merlino: tenor; Bob Tebow: bass, with Anita herself as soprano and soloist) and secure a contract more tailored to her needs with Warner Brothers. The result over the next two years, were these five superbly fashioned albums.

One of the great pop music arrangers, Anita compliments her interpretations of the compositions of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Tony Hatch, Lennon McCartney, Bacharach-David, Bert Kaempfert and Goffin King with imaginative selections like Nico Fidenco's joyful Con Te Sulla Spiaggia, with Holiday, the then recent Robin and Barry Gibb hit which had heralded the arrival of the Bee Gees in the northern hemisphere, and four Addrisi Brothers compositions that are sublime examples of sunshine pop; Never My Love (a huge North American hit in 1967 for the Association), Autumn Afternoon, I Would Love You and the anthemic Happiness (Is). All are considered from a refreshing new perspective, as is the jazzier material, which finds the likes of Mood Indigo and Swinging on a Star revisited with sensuality and humour.

Anita Kerr was the vocal embodiment of the "Nashville Sound" which dominated country music throughout the mid-'50s and '60s. Along with the Jordanaires, her group, the Anita Kerr Singers, were the seminal backing vocal unit of the era, and it is estimated that at their early-'60s peak, they graced fully one-quarter of all of the records coming out of Nashville's studios.

Kerr was born Anita Jean Grilli on Halloween 1927 in Memphis, TN; her mother hosted a local radio program there, and by the age of four, Anita herself was taking piano lessons. In her early teens, she formed her own girl group, the Grilli Sisters, which soon became a fixture on her mother's radio show. At age 14, she was hired as the station's staff pianist. In 1948, Kerr left Memphis and began playing piano on the club circuit. The following year, she formed the Anita Kerr Singers, which also featured alto Dottie Dillard, tenor Gil Wright, and baritone Louis Nunley. After gaining some fame on regional radio, NBC hired the Singers for the program Sunday Down South, with Kerr brought aboard as chorus director.

In 1951, the group signed to Decca Records and began their career as a studio backing unit. Five years later, the Singers made their first appearance on the New York-based Arthur Godfrey Talent Scouts television program and quickly became featured players, splitting their time between the broadcast and their session work. In the mid-'50s, Kerr joined forces with Chet Atkins, then the head of RCA Records' country division and the creator of the pop-centric "Nashville Sound," which employed vocal choruses as a means of smoothing over country music's rougher edges. The Anita Kerr Singers appeared on literally hundreds of the era's most prominent recordings, including releases from Jim Reeves, Roy Orbison, Floyd Cramer, Dottie West, Hank Snow, Eddy Arnold, and Lorne Greene; even pop singers like Perry Como and Brook Benton enlisted Kerr's talents. She also produced Skeeter Davis' End of the World album, making Kerr one of the very first women to oversee a Nashville recording.

After touring Europe in 1964, she moved to California the next year to focus her energies on freelance production and songwriting, even as two of the Singers' LPs, We Dig Mancini and Southland Favorites, were winning Grammy awards (in the Vocal Group and Gospel categories, respectively). In the later years of the decade, Kerr teamed with poet Rod McKuen for a series of mood-music records, titled The Sea, The Earth, and The Sky, for which the Singers were renamed the San Sebastian Strings and Singers. At the same time, the group were featured weekly on the Smothers Brothers' sketch comedy program. By the 1970s, Kerr produced a number of easy listening records before moving to her second husband Alex Grob's native Switzerland to compose music for films. Eventually, she returned to Memphis.

In the 1950s and early '60s, arranger Anita Kerr and her aggregate of backing vocalists helped to define "the Nashville Sound" – having supported the likes of Eddy Arnold, Perry Como, Floyd Cramer, Red Foley, Jim Reeves, Hank Snow, and Roy Orbison. Along with the Anita Kerr Singers, she re-scored and re-recorded a number of concurrent crossover country and pop singles. Released in 1966, And Now…The Anita Kerr Orchestra! was the first of five long-players that would bear her name during a brief but prolific run on Warner Bros. Records. It was likewise the only one to credit the Anita Kerr Orchestra, as opposed to the usual Anita Kerr Singers moniker. Her previous tenure in the music business gave her great insight into selecting and recasting the better-known tunes. Rather than a large and pompous display, she gives a refreshing lightness to the update of "Spanish Harlem," which absorbs just enough Latin influence to be effective. Returning briefly to her Nashville digs, Kerr turns up the infectiously fun syncopation of "Sweetie Baby" – a song that initially gained prominence as the B-side to Floyd Cramer's mega-hit "Last Date." Refusing to limit her inspirations to any specific genre classification, the swinging "Sermonette" comes from the Julian "Cannonball" Adderley songbook, while the anthemic staple of Americana "This Land Is Your Land" adopts a mod sax-fueled ragtime feel that all but abandons the preconception of its former folkie self. The bluesy "I Almost Lost My Mind" and the slight R&B vibe on "That's Life" are proof Kerr possesses something that her instrumental easy listening contemporaries rarely display…soul. The Italian pop hit "Con Te Spiaggia" could easily be the hippest entry of them all, with a light, bouncy backbeat and an oddly nasal-sounding "yeah yeah" singalong chorus. The cover of Duke Ellington's "Mood Indigo" – concluding the album – stands as a singular triumph for the variety of solo instruments Kerr incorporates, ranging from an eerily lonesome electric guitar to a powerful brass section.

CD2: The Anita Kerr Singers - Slightly Baroque (1966)
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 210 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 87 Mb | 00:36:15 | Scans included

After the platter full of instrumentals featured on And Now the Anita Kerr Orchestra (1966), the multi-talented first lady of the Nashville studio scene returned to scoring songs for and contributing to the Anita Kerr Singers. Although Slightly Baroque (1966) could have referred to her financial situation after the less than enthusiastic sales of And Now, instead it alludes to the style in which the dozen pop selections on the album are arranged. As noted music journalist Colin Escott mentions in his liner notes to the 2007 Collectors' Choice Music CD reissue of Slightly Baroque, it had only been a year earlier that The Baroque Beatles Book (1965) was released, which took then-current hits from the Fab Four and turned them into classically tinged masterworks. Here, Kerr has primarily chosen more seasoned pop standards to give her unique "Baroque" treatment. But in reality, the somewhat pompous verbiage more or less speaks to harpsichord-laden breaks and minor chord changes for the vocalists. Speaking of which, the Anita Kerr Singers are: Kerr (soprano), who is joined by Gene Merlino (tenor), B.J. Baker (alto) and Bob Tebow (bass). Even pre-rock era material – most notably the opener "Mona Lisa" and "Answer Me My Love" – take on a fresh air of mod sophistication as Kerr and company weave their airtight harmonies around the familiar yet noticeably altered melody. "My Prayer" embodies a cryptically aching somber tone, even more so than either of its better-known predecessors from Glenn Miller or the Platters. The comparatively contemporary titles, such as Tom Jones' "It's Not Unusual" and the Tony Hatch-penned "My Love" – which Petula Clark turned into a Pop Singles chart topper – are suitably retro-fitted. Perhaps it was too soon to overhaul these current cuts as both teeter the fine line that could easily cross into the realm of insipid elevator music. However, that is not to suggest all the recent tunes fall short, as "Cast Your Fate to the Wind" is touching and poignant, while "One Note Samba" offers up the Anita Kerr Singers as the '60s forerunner to the Manhattan Transfer.

The Anita Kerr Orchestra & Singers - The Five Classic Warner Brothers Albums 1966-68 (2016) 5CD Box Set

CD3: The Anita Kerr Singers - Bert Kaempfert Turns Us On! (1967)
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 195 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 85 Mb | 00:35:33 | Scans included

Bordering on easy listening, the Anita Kerr Singers provided an airy, non-threatening pop sensibility scored by the "first lady" of the Nashville music studio scene. Kerr's sizable credentials landed her a multi-project deal at Warner Bros., where she cut five albums in less than two years. This is the third in the series, which included tunes penned or made famous by the German composer Bert Kaempfert. Although he would rack up several notable numbers stateside, perhaps residual reticence from WWII was reflected by Kaempfert's lack of success. However, Kerr's infallible ear helped her recast his biggest hits for 1967's dozen-song Bert Kaempfert Turns Us On! "L-O-V-E" was a latter-era chart-maker for Nat King Cole, and is perhaps most familiar to modern audiences from multiple uses in a variety of advertisements. Here, the laid-back vocalists give the tune a warmth that would become a trademark of Kerr's ensemble. The gentle "Two Can Live on Love Alone" takes on a definite melancholia, thanks in part to the artist's lead wafting above the male chorus to great effect. Slightly more upbeat is the jazzy soft shoe of "Remember When (We Made These Memories)," featuring a perfect example of the combo's communal vocals. "Danke Schoen" and "Strangers in the Night" bring out the best of what Kerr and company have to offer. Their simple and unobtrusive melodies are perfect for the light interpretations found here. "For Bert" is the sole original, and was penned by Kerr and on-again, off-again collaborator Rod McKuen, presumably as an homage to Kaempfert.

The Anita Kerr Orchestra & Singers - The Five Classic Warner Brothers Albums 1966-68 (2016) 5CD Box Set

CD4: The Anita Kerr Singers - All You Need Is Love (1967)
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 221 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 92 Mb | 00:38:34 | Scans included

The multi-talented, Nashville-based Anita Kerr had been a studio arranger and behind-the-scenes mover and shaker in Music City USA for nearly two decades when she signed with Warner Brothers in the mid-'60s. Her fourth LP bore the optimistic title All You Need Is Love (1967). In addition to remaking the Beatles' Summer of Love anthem, Kerr (soprano/soloist) leads her ensemble – which also consists of B.J. Baker (alto), Gene Merlino (tenor), and Bob Tebow (bass) – through an assortment of contemporaneous light rock and pop. Some of the re-arrangements work better than others in a choral setting. For instance, the Bee Gees' languid "Holiday" is exquisite and moody with Kerr's voice hovering over the ensemble for an ethereal listening experience that is particularly recommended for those who like the original. The Addrisi Brothers-penned "Never My Love" bears the same harmonic earmarks and complexities as the Association's hit version with the buoyancy of Kerr's gliding vocals. From the Bacharach/David songbook comes arguably the most endearing inclusion of them all, Kerr's interpretation of "The Look of Love." It retains all of the mystique and subtle charm of Dusty Springfield or Dame Shirley Bassey without becoming too instrumentally watered down or vocally tarted up. While not quite on par with the previously mentioned tunes, for the remake of "How Can I Be Sure?," Kerr and company match the minor-chord noir, yet can't seem to believably pull off the blue-eyed soul ingrained within the Rascals' formidable grooves. And to the same point, Kerr perhaps would have been better served having shelved the utilitarian choral reading of "(You Make Me Feel) Like a Natural Woman." Clearly, Aretha she ain't! And for her next album Sounds (1968), the Anita Kerr Singers returned to delivering selections that are uniformly better suited to the combo's strengths.

The Anita Kerr Orchestra & Singers - The Five Classic Warner Brothers Albums 1966-68 (2016) 5CD Box Set

CD5: The Anita Kerr Singers - Sounds (1968)
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 193 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 80 Mb | 00:33:32 | Scans included

Although involvement as an integral contributor to the San Sebastian Strings kept Anita Kerr's relationship with Warner Bros. going for another few years, 1968's Sounds concluded her brief yet prolific solo stint with the label. In many ways – retrospect being one of them – Kerr's final effort may well be her best during the two years (1966-1968) she spent on the Warner roster. Likewise, it harks back to her early style of finding material that hadn't necessarily been hits. In fact, the only real prerequisite was the song's adaptability to Kerr's unique musical touch – as an instrumental by the Anita Kerr Orchestra or a reconfigured vocal arrangement via the Anita Kerr Singers. It is the latter ensemble that is assembled here, featuring the talents of Kerr (soprano/soloist), who is joined by Gene Merlino (tenor), B.J. Baker (alto), and Bob Tebow (bass). Rather than scour for rock & roll residue, Kerr trusts her instincts, coming up with a dozen of the most modern easy listening sides of the era. The opener, "Happiness" (aka "Happiness Is") returns the combo to the refined pop pomp infused into the Anita Kerr Singers' Slightly Baroque project from 1966. The minor chord changes and occasional dark vocal inflections are enough to best the Association's better-known version. The hauntingly beautiful melody to "Wine in the Wind" provides Kerr a perfect outlet for her ethereal lingering lead. The same can be said of the lovely and pensive "Long Live Our Love" – which had come miles from the Shangri-Las' 1966 Top 40 hit.
