A double CD tribute album contains tracks specially recorded by more than 30 contemporary acts from around the globe who have re-invented, re-interpreted and rebooted many of Talk Talk’s greatest moments precisely 30 years since ‘Talk Talk’ made its mark on the mainstream. Among the artists appearing on the CD are: Alan Wilder (Recoil), White Lies, King Creosote, Jason Lytle (Grandaddy), Zero 7, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Richard Reed Parry (Arcade Fire), Joan As Police Woman, Sean Carey (Bon Iver), Lights, Goldheart Assembly, Thomas White (Electric Soft Parade), Fyfe Dangerfield (Guillemots), Thomas Feiner, The Black Ships and Turin Brakes. Also contributing to the album are ex-Talk Talk collaborators Ian Curnow, David Rhodes, Gaynor Sadler and Martin Ditcham.
For those who don't know, Talk Talk, between 1982 and 1991, were responsible for some of the most beautiful and wonderful music that has ever been committed to CD (or indeed vinyl). Led by Mark Hollis, they released an album of melancholy-tinged New Romantic pop (The Party's Over, 1982), an album of jazz-tinged pop (It's My Life, 1984), an album of simply beautiful pop with an ambient twinge (the hugely successful The Colour of Spring, 1986), an album of highly influential and remarkable quiet ambient rock (Spirit of Eden, 1988), and their finale, the even more quiet Laughing Stock (1991). Mark Hollis went on to release an even more beautiful and sparse eponymous solo album before, fittingly, the sound of his music faded away to the long silence that has since ensued.
With so many bands having named Talk Talk as an influence since the late 1980s, a tribute album is only fitting - and long overdue. Songs from the albums are split fairly evenly; there's also a couple of B-sides (It's Getting Late in the Evening, ?), and a solitary cover from Hollis's solo album, the confusingly titled 'The Colour of Spring'.
As one might expect from a tribute album, songs can be split into three types. Firstly, there's versions that are straightforward copies of the originals, such as Thomas White's Candy, and The Black Ships' Renee, both excellent, are among the best of these. Surprisingly, songs from The Party's Over (Candy, The Party's Over, Today) seem to have perhaps dated least, probably a sign of the recent 80s synthpop revival.
Secondly, there's some fairly radical reworkings of songs. Perhaps the most successful of these is Goldheart Assembly's Chameleon Day, which starts as a replica of the original brief, largely inaudible recording from The Colour of Spring, before, totally unexpectedly, burgeoning into a loud, brash anthem, complete with chorus. April 5th is transformed into a beautiful instrumental with jazz overtunes of which Talk Talk would undoubtedly approve, and S Carey's I Believe In You almost made me cry - in a good way.
To offset this are perhaps the three only truly disapppointing tracks of the thirty on offer. The vocal range required on Give It Up is too much for the singer with White Lies, with matters not being helped by the fact that he appears to be accompanied for much of the recording by a small child's Bontempi keyboard, and somebody playing the coconut shells. Inheritance by Recoil consists of Tricky-esque spoken vocals over largely inaudible and seemingly irrelevant music, although I must confess that I haven't managed yet to listen to the whole song, as I've found it too cringeworthy to be able to avoid skipping to the next track. And, perhaps worst of all, Lia Aces turns the wondrous choral-driven epic Time It's Time into a fourth-rate Cocteau Twins song, with literally no redeeming features.
Despite the odd jarring note, however, the 30 track compilation is a triumph. It showcases Talk Talk for what they were - a band who were experimental and moving, who made downright lovely music, and who will be appreciated and loved to this day by anybody who has ever been a fan. At times, when the covers are found to be lacking, it demonstrates what an extraordinary (and much-missed) vocalist Mark Hollis is. And, at the same time, it proves that Talk Talk's music is as brilliant and inspirational as it ever has been, as listeners perhaps not completely au fait with their work - or completely ignorant of it - will hopefully discover.Review by Samuel, Amazon
