Bruno Walter Schlesinger was born in Berlin on September 15, 1876. He began to play piano at an early age, and entered the Stern Conservatory of Berlin at age eight. He studied with Ehrlich, Bussler, and Radecke. He made a public appearance as a pianist at age nine. At age 13 he heard a concert by Hans von Bülow and decided to become a conductor. This was intensified by attendance at a performance at the Bayreuth Festival in 1891. He became an opera coach at the Cologne Opera in 1893 while still a teen-ager. His debut as a conductor was with a little-known work, Lortzing's Der Waffenschmied, (The Weaponsmith). He became an assistant conductor at the Hamburg Stadttheater in 1894.

Kaum zu glauben, aber Juditha tTriumphans ist das einzige Oratorium des äußerst produktiven Antonio Vivaldi. Dies ist umso erstaunlicher, war der « Prete Rosso » doch zeitlebens mit dem berühmten Ospedale della Pietà in Venedig eng verbunden. Der Ruf der einstigen Konzerte in diesem Waisenhaus für Mädchen hallt noch heute bis weit über Venedig hinaus. Juditha Triumphans hat Vivaldi den jungen Musikerinnen quasi auf den Leib geschrieben. So verwundet es nicht, dass das Werk auch nur mit Frauenstimmen - und dies auch im Chor - besetzt ist. Roberto Zarpellon versammelt in diesem Livemitschnitt junge Sängerinnen, deren Leidenschaft für die melancholisch-feurigen Musik gleichsam in jeder Note hörbar ist.

A distinguished and versatile musician, Attilio Ariosti was born in Bologna. He joined the Servite order, but in 1696 he was in the service of the Duke of Mantua, travelling thence to Berlin at the request of the Electress Sophie Charlotte and continuing as a composer of operas and other music. Recalled by his religious superiors, he returned by way of Vienna, where he spent some years intermittently in the service of the court. Good Friday in 1705: Emperor Leopold I chose a macabre story from the Old Testament for devotion for himself and the court. An oratorio that was to underpin the unbreakable faith of virtually the entire Holy Roman Empire. Attilio Ariosti created profound, groundbreaking music for it, which shows it's creator's exceedingly great sensorium for drama.

Die Zauberflöte von Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart mit dem Text des Theaterprinzipals und Schauspielers Emanuel Schikaneder war am 30. September 1791 im Theater auf der Wieden in Wien erstmals über die Bühne gegangen. Damit nahm eine unvergleichliche Erfolgsgeschichte ihren Anfang. Davon wird auch der Mainzer Hofmusiker Franz Heinrich Ehrenfried (1747-1828) mit seiner Bearbeitung der Zauberflöte für Flötenquartett profitiert haben. Ehrenfried, der offenbar eine besondere Vorliebe für Besetzungen mit dem Modeinstrument Flöte hatte, gelingt mit diesem Quartett ein kompositorisch und spieltechnisch anspruchsvolles Stück.

Der Hauptteil der CD ist dem 1508 in Pressburg geborenen Hans Newsidler gewidmet, der in Nürnberg mit der Veröffentlichung von acht Tabulaturbüchern - in deutscher Tabulatur geschrieben -, welche die gesamte Breite lautenistischer Kunst vom Anfänger bis zum Virtuosen umspannen, lange vergessenen aber unsterblichen Ruhm am Lautenhimmel erlangte. Es folgen Werke des um 1450 in Schwäbisch-Gmünd geborenen Hans Judenkünig, der, von der franko-flämischen Schule beeinflusst, zwei der ersten deutschen Lautentabulaturen verfasste. Weiters von Arnolt Schlick und Simon Gintzler, die sich alle der schwierigen deutschen, vom blinden Organisten Conrad Paumann erfundenen, Tabulatur bedienten, welche jedem Platz auf dem Griffbrett eine eigene Zahl oder Zeichen zuordnet.
