Seit über einem halben Jahrhundert gilt das von Paul Van Nevel gegründete Huelgas Ensemble als eines der weltbesten Vokalensembles für Alte Musik. Nach zahllosen, preisgekrönten Aufnahmen mit Werken aus dem Mittelalter und der Renaissance widmen sie sich mit Max Reger (1873-1916) erstmals ausschließlich einem Komponisten aus der Spätromantik.Reger ist wahrscheinlich am besten für seine symphonischen und Orgelwerke bekannt, während sein Vokalrepertoire weitgehend in Vergessenheit geraten ist. Zu Unrecht, wie Paul van Nevel meint, denn er ist ein großer Fan der polyphonen Musik Max Regers. Mit dieser Aufnahme demonstriert er eindrücklich, welche Intensität, Tiefe, Vielfalt und Qualität Regers Musik bietet.

The multi-award-winning Christoph Spering and his New Orchestra and Chorus Musicus Köln are devoting another instalment to Johann Sebastian Bach's cantatas from 1724 / 25. These cantatas were almost exclusively new compositions by Bach and are characterised by their particular originality and variety of form.

Ihr Album »Luther tanzt« wurde ein echter Bestseller. Das neue Album heißt »Garlic & Onions« und bei der Musik geht es um Vergnügungen und kulinarischen Genuss im weitesten Sinne.

Schmittbaur, der in Bamberg geboren wurde, erhielt seine Ausbildung durch den Würzburger Hoforgelbauer Johann Seuffert, zudem war er Schüler von Niccolo Jacomelli in Bologna. 1754 erhielt er eine Anstellung in der Rastatter Hofkapelle, 1766 wurde er deren Kapellmeister. Nach der Auflösung der Rastatter Kapelle war er Konzertmeister in der Karlsruher Hofkapelle. Ab Januar 1775 erhielt Schmittbaur die Stelle des Domkapellmeisters in Köln, wo er das Musikleben durch die Konzerte der »Musikalischen Akademien« nachhaltig prägte. 1777 wurde er Hofkapellmeister in Karlsruhe, wo er der dortigen Kapelle zu hohem Ansehen verhalf. Nach Schmittbaurs Tod geriet seine Musik lange in Vergessenheit. Doch zu Unrecht, wie diese Aufnahme von l’arte del mondo unter der Leitung des Dirigenten Werner Ehrhardt zeigt. Zu hören sind drei Sinfonien op. 2 (1776), die aus Schmittbaurs Kölner Zeit als Domkapellmeister stammen und durchweg heiteren, teilweise sogar humorvollen Charakter haben. Die vierte Sinfonie hat den Titel »bey Gelegenheit der Höchsten Vermählung« und wurde von Schmittbaur 1797 für die Hochzeit der Tochter des badischen Erbprinzen Carl Ludwig komponiert. Auch dieses Spätwerk erweist sich als ein farbenfroh instrumentiertes und kontrastreiches Stück.

Diese beiden, vielfach ausgezeichneten Künstler verbindet aber nicht nur eine einzigartige Virtuosität miteinander, mit der sie ihren Instrumenten ganz neue Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten entlocken. Dorothee Oberlinger und Nils Mönkemeyer sind ungemein neugierige Musiker und ständig auf der Suche nach unbekanntem bzw. neuem Repertoire.

1675 befand sich der Italiener Francesco Cavalli auf dem Höhepunkt seines Ruhmes. Seine rund 40 Opern waren von den Spielplänen Venedigs nicht mehr wegzudenken. Und der französische Sonnenkönig hatte zu Cavallis Musik getanzt. Doch in jenem Jahr 1675 spürte der einstige Schüler von Monteverdi, dass er wohl nicht mehr lange zu leben haben werde. So komponierte er seine eigene »Totenmesse«, die zweimal jährlich zu seinem Gedenken aufgeführt werden sollte. Erstmals erklungen ist dieses »Requiem« in Cavallis Todesjahr 1676. Und noch im 19. Jahrhundert wurde diese »Missa pro defunctis« bewundert. So stellte man dieses sakrale Opus Magnum von seiner spirituellen Kraft her gar auf eine Stufe mit Mozarts »Requiem«.
