Tangerine Dream - Tangerine Tree [complete] Part 3 of 8: vol. 25 - vol. 36 of 92

Tangerine Tree was a project from 2002 through 2006 that was dedicated to the collection, preservation and distribution of unreleased concerts and other audio material by the band Tangerine Dream. The creators of the Tangerine Tree project received permission from Tangerine Dream to release the collection on a strict non-profit basis. Several of the Tangerine Tree volumes have been used as the basis for official Tangerine Dream releases. The project collected just under 300 hours of material (291:39:26).

Material was collected from audience recordings, soundboard recordings, recordings of radio and TV transmissions and in some cases the purchase of studio masters. Only recordings of a high quality and a unique nature were considered for the core Tangerine Tree volumes. These recordings were professionally re-mastered and released on CD-R and accompanied by high quality artwork for the CD labels and case liners.

Two days after starting their North American tour in the city of Milwaukee on March 29th, 1977, Tangerine Dream gave an outstanding performance in the Detroit Ford Auditorium, a concert that can be best described as 'Heavy Metal Electronics', as it contains some of the most vicious and furious guitar work by Edgar Froese that has been heard so far.

Maybe he wanted to pay tribute to Detroit's punk music heroes The Stooges, whose singer Iggy Pop was mentioned in the credits of Edgar Froese's solo work Macula Transfer. Compared to the excellent audience recording as presented on Tangerine Tree Volume 25: Detroit 1977, the official Encore double album release sounds almost tame, and it seems that the frantic Detroit audience transported Tangerine Dream to new creative heights, such is the intensity of this concert.

With Tangerine Tree VIII, released in late 2005, the original release has been replaced by Tangerine Tree Volume 25: Detroit 1977, a new version of this recording, offering a clearer sound, being remastered from a first generation recording.

The Europe/US tour of autumn 1980 was Johannes Schmoelling's first extensive concert tour with Tangerine Dream. Starting in Kiel, Germany on October 11th and ending in Santa Monica, USA on November 22nd 1980, it covered 28 performances of which 17 exist as fan tape recordings.

For the first time in Tangerine Dream's career, the music played within a concert tour was no longer entirely improvised. There was little room for variation, except for keyboard and piano solos that were performed differently now and then. The eighties had finally arrived, and the very productive Froese/Franke/Schmoelling line-up presented a live set with state-of-the-art sequencer music which even twenty years later still sounds fresh and innovative. Although very reminiscent of Thief, large parts of the music that were played during this tour are still unreleased, but Tangerine Tree Volume 26: Brussels 1980 with its mostly excellent sound quality surely is able to fill the gap.

On February 9th, 1976 Tangerine Dream performed live in Brussels. Part of this concert had been available on the bootleg CD Danger Live since 1992. Tangerine Tree Volume 27: Brussels 1976 now features the complete 99 minutes of the gig and was remastered directly from a first generation tape. The Tangerine Tree release also includes the last missing 20 seconds of the second track and the first few seconds of the encore. Both were not present on the first generation tape, but thanks to a member of the tadream discussion list (who also had recorded the show back in 1976) it was possible to fill the gaps. The sound quality is great considering that it is an audience recording from 1976. The music is a perfect mix of sequencers, mellotron and guitar – one of the highlights from that year.

Together with Tangerine Tree Volume 31: Brussels 1976, this release made the bootleg Danger Live obsolete, which consists of material from the same concerts, but incomplete and of less excellent sound quality.

Tangerine Tree Volume 28: Firenze 1981 presents another concert of the European tour that took place in early 1981. The material was remastered from a tape of unknown generation, but surely very close to the master recording. The sound quality is on par with that of Paris, February 2nd (released as Tangerine Tree Volume 14: Paris 1981), with the exception of the encores which had to be left out of the release due to unsufficient sound quality. Although the basic tracks are in no way different than from Paris (or any other gig from that tour), Tangerine Dream were in a very good mood a played some really inspired and awesome keyboard solos.

Tangerine Tree Volume 29: London 1990 fills the gap of concerts of the early nineties with a recording of the London concert of October 26th, 1990. Besides the Bristol show that is featured on several bootlegs this might be the best fan recording from the 1990 UK tour. The release was remastered straight from the audience master recording, so the sound is very clean with few exceptions, the most notable being some disturbing noises during the very first minutes, which were caused by a loose microphone connection. The repertoire of that tour mostly consisted of tracks taken from Optical Race (1988), Lily On The Beach, Destination Berlin (both 1989) and Melrose (1990). But it also includes a yet unreleased epic of some twelve minutes and the track Ruling The Waves which is so far only available as an official download from the internet. Furthermore several well-known tracks sound quite different from their studio versions due to the fact that on this tour Tangerine Dream introduced two guests on saxophone, one of them being Linda Spa who would become almost a regular group member during the following six years.

Tangerine Tree Volume 30: Reims 1974 presents a remastered version of the famous bootleg Live! Improvised! of the even more famous concert at the Reims cathedral in December 1974. Due to the careful remastering the Tangerine Tree version is supposed to have an even better sound quality than the excellent sounding bootleg that was itself mastered from a radio broadcast.

Tangerine Tree Volume 31: Brussels 1976 features another great concert of the late 1976 tour. The sound quality of this audience concert is very good with the exception that it is very bassy in places. Most likely the taper stood very near to one of the loudspeakers and the tape machine could not handle the bassy sequencer sounds. Still it is a very enjoyable and fascinating recording.

Together with Tangerine Tree Volume 27: Brussels 1976, this release made the bootleg Danger Live obsolete, which consists of material from the same concerts, but incomplete and of less excellent sound quality.

Only a few months after Tangerine Dream's one-off concert in the London Astoria Theatre on February 15th, 2003, the Tangerine Tree project presented this gig remastered from an audience minidisc recording. Due to the length of the concert, the music is split across three CDs: Tangerine Tree Volume 32: London 2003 includes the first and second disc, while Tangerine Tree Volume 33: London 2003 has the third disc. The sound quality is very good considering that the music was very bassy and loud on that event.

The opening part of this concert had the same playlist as the Warsaw concert of 2001 (see Tangerine Tree Volume 15: Warsaw 2001) but later it was quite different and featured some unique compositions, including several tracks from the forthcoming album Dream Mixes 4 that were unreleased by the time and so had to stay untitled in the track listing of the this Tangerine Tree volume.

Tangerine Tree Volume 33: London 2003 includes the third of the three-disc recording of Tangerine Dream's concert in the London Astoria Theatre on February 15th, 2003. The other two discs have been released as Tangerine Tree Volume 32: London 2003. This disc features the last half hour of the concert, including the encores, one of them the classic unreleased Legend Leftover, that was played in 1986 for the last time, and the officially unreleased arrangement of the Beatles' Back In The U.S.S.R.. After the 1996 version of Eleanor Rigby, this was the second time that Tangerine Dream played a classic Beatles song in their own unique style.

With Tangerine Tree Volume 34: London 1976 one more concert of 1976 has been in this fan project. A shortened version of this concert had previously been released as part of the bootleg 3 Tier Dream (1993), there called Analogue Days. The Tangerine Tree recording is complete except for the encore which gets cut off after some 13 minutes – most likely the person who recorded it ran out of tape.

On this particular evening Chris Franke had some obvious problems with 'taming the beast', his sequencer. But nevertheless TD and the audience enjoyed it, and at the beginning of disc 2 someone can be heard shouting: "Macht nicht so lange Pause, ihr Banditen" (German for: "Don't take such long breaks, you bandits!"), at which Edgar holds up his hands before launching into the piano introduction.

Tangerine Tree Volume 35: Birmingham 1986 features a concert of the 1986 European tour. It has been remastered from an audience recording of the Birmingham concert on March 17th, which originally got purchased at a record fair in England, just five days after the concert took place. It has a great sound quality, except for a minor background noise that can be heard during the more quiet passages.

The music is pretty much identical to that of the US tour of the same year (as featured on Tangerine Tree Volume 24: Laguna Hills 1986 and Tangerine Leaves Volume 12: Ottawa 1986), except that Tangerine Dream left out the opening Pilots Of Purple Twilight and that they played Cool Breeze Of Brighton (aka Vermillion Sands) instead of Ride On The Ray. The second encore is Mothers Of Rain in an early version, two years before it was finally released on the studio album Optical Race.

Tangerine Tree Volume 36: Assorted Secrets is different from any other released volume of this series in that it does not feature a complete concert but compiles a number of rare tracks, of which most were taken from the German radio shows 'Schwingungen' and 'Electrobeats'. Usually TD gave an interview and brought along some nice goodies like excerpts from live tours which were just completed. The majority of the tracks on this 2-CD set comes from these two radio shows, the rest was taken from video cassettes or other radio shows.

The track Underground End Titles was taken from the German video Auf Scheisser schießt man nicht (aka Underground), starring Edgar Froese among other mostly unknown actors. It is a strange, quite anarchic movie, and the music for this film was supplied by the so-called 'Tangerine Dream Band'. This is most probably one of the short-lived predecessors of Tangerine Dream that Edgar Froese founded after he had left The Ones. The line-up of this band during the soundtrack recording is unknown.

Ultima Thule Improvisation was taken from a radio broadcast in 1970; the line-up might be Froese/Schulze/Schnitzler. Geradeaus bis zum Morgen is an excerpt of the unreleased soundtrack for the German movie of the same name, dating from 1972 (probably performed by Froese/Franke/Baumann). Signale aus der Schwaebischen Straße is a 15 minute long remastered medley from the German name-sake video, performed by Froese/Franke/Baumann.

Calymba Caly, originating from the 1980/1981 world tour was taken from an 'Electrobeats' show. The live version of White Eagle was performed on September 9th, 1982 during the German TV show 'Bio's Bahnhof'. Both track were performed by the line-up Froese/Franke/Schmoelling. Loved By The Sun is a rejected version for the movie Legend with vocals by Susanne Pawlitzki that is totally different from the version featuring Jon Anderson.

Legend Leftover and Cool Breeze Of Brighton were taken from the concert at Brighton on March 24th, 1986 and broadcast on 'Electrobeats', while Yellowstone Park (Rocky Mountains), Scuba Scuba (here titled Samba Motel) and Underwater Twilight were taken from three different shows (Los Angeles, Phoenix and Albuquerque) during the 1986 North America tour and broadcast on 'Schwingungen'.

Shy People Outtake is a track composed for the soundtrack Shy People that was rejected and never officially released. Papyrus (Piano) (here titled Canyon Clasics) is a widely extended version of the piano solo as it was performed during the 1988 North America tour. Phaedra was performed in Dallas on September 14th, 1988 during the same tour, while Optical Race was performed live on February 16th, 1989 on the RTL TV show 'Action'.

The remaining tracks were all taken from 'Electrobeats' shows: Mandala is from the unreleased 1990 soundtrack of the namesake movie. On Crane's Passage is a demo version of the composition released on Goblins Club.

Barbakane, Sundance Kid, Catwalk, Touchwood and Towards The Evening Star originate from the London concert on November 30th, 1996 (that is in full length released as Tangerine Leaves Volume 10: London 1996 and Tangerine Leaves Volume 11: London 1996).

Maedchen On The Stairs and Thief Yang And The Tangram Seal were taken from the Brussels concert on April 19th, 1997, while As The Sun Moves Towards Heaven and Beatrice, l'ame infinite were recorded during the world premiere concert of Inferno (that is in full length released as Tangerine Tree Volume 3: Bernau 2001, too).

Due to the different sources of the music material sound quality ranges from excellent to good. It is an excellent collection of live and studio tracks, covering a range of more than 30 years of band history. Two addendums to this set have been released later as Tangerine Tree Volume 50: Assorted Secrets 2 and Tangerine Tree Volume 63: Assorted Secrets 3.
