Kardeş Türküler (translated Songs of Fraternity) was conceived in 1993 as a series of concerts given by the music branch of the Folklore Club at Boğaziçi University in İstanbul, Turkey.
The diverse ethnic groups in this ancient part of the world initially gave cause for the concerts to have artists perform interpretations of Anatolian folksongs in Turkish, Arabic, Kurdish, Azerbaijani, Georgian and Armenian.
Under the auspices of the Boğaziçi Performing Arts Ensemble (BGST), formed in 1995, the program used the concert stage to advance the ideals of common ancestry and celebration of diversity as a foil to cultural polarization and ethnic tension.
Forthwith, the musical heritage of the Laz, Georgian, Circassian, Roma, Macedonian and Alevi cultures at all were incorporated into the program.
The scholarly collection and research of the diverse folklore tradition of the region is an important part of BGST’s activities, but Kardeş Türküler has been intent on forging its own music tradition as well.Wikipedia
Most people know this ensemble from their track on a Putumayo collection, but the rare beauty of the music is not revealed in one song. This set of Sephardic songs, arranged by Erkan Ogur (who also plays guitar and ud), is performed to subdued perfection by an ensemble of the Esims (vocals and guitar), Okay Temiz on percussion, Tarik Sezer (cello and keyboards) and Cem Ikiz on guitar. This is a 2005 reisue of the original 1989 recording, remastered and excellent.
Cem Karaca (April 5, 1945 - February 8, 2004) was a prominent Turkish rock musician and one of the most important figures in the Anatolian rock movement.
Neil Young has long been one of rock’s great romantics, mourning the utopian ideals of the “hippie” ‘60s and his vision of what America was…or at least should have been. In some ways, Greendale–which could be described as a “rock novel”–adds a mourning for humanity itself to the mix, as Young presents his vision of America 2003 via the story of a fictional family in a small California town. There’s drama galore–a cop is killed by a drug dealer; Grandpa has a fatal heart attack while pointing a gun at a TV reporter–but most of these songs also work individually as terrific rock tunes. It’s a more subdued Crazy Horse this time out, with only Neil on lead guitar and little of the distorted rage found on albums like Ragged Glory. But “Grandpa’s Interview” has a gorgeous riff that recalls Zuma’s “Don’t Cry No Tears”; “Be the Rain” is a genuine Neil Young anthem about love, peace, saving the planet, and doing the right thing. A few pieces sound a tad meandering at first, which could lead one to conclude that Greendale is only a good Neil Young album. Repeated listening, however, should confirm that Greendale is a great Neil Young album.Bill Holdship - Amazon.com
