An underground icon throughout the Arab world, vocalist Yasmine Hamdan presents her mesmerizing debut solo album - an elegant mutant strain of electro folk, inspired by various Middle eastern traditions - written and produced in collaboration with Marc Collin of Nouvelle Vague.

Yasmine first became known with Soapkills, the duo she founded in Beirut, which was probably the first indie/electronic band to appear in the Middle East. The music of Soapkills quickly became the soundtrack to the vibrant, young arts scene which developed in postwar Lebanon and elsewhere in the Arab world. On moving to Paris Yasmine worked with CocoRosie and French electronic music producer Mirwais.

The inspiration for the melodies and the lyrics of her music comes from the great Arab women singers of the mid-20th century and the mischievous sensuality and the subtle, ironic social criticism which pervades their lyrics. Yasmine's vocals are connected to traditions of Arabic music but the structures and arrangements of the songs are very remote from its codes. She takes a personal, unconventional and fresh approach that might be described as a kind of elegant, mutant strain of electro folk, mysteriously springing from somewhere in the Persian Gulf, with acoustic guitars, vintage synths, inspired atmospheres and Yasmine's multi-faceted, wonderful voice.

Personnel: Yasmine Hamdan (vocals), Marc Collin (co-producer, keyboards & programming), Kevin Seddiki, Thibaut Barbillon, Julien Deguines, Marc Kodsi (guitars), Gael Rakotondrabe (keyboards, programming), Sliman Kouidri (karkabou, guimbri), Bruno Ralle (synth)

Yasmine Hamdan deserves to be the next female celebrity from the Arab-speaking world. She's a Lebanese singer who began her career in Beirut but now lives in Paris, where she has collaborated with producer, keyboard player and programmer Marc Collin, of Nouvelle Vague fame, to create an album that veers between acoustic folk and electropop, while including echoes of mid-20th-century popular music from Lebanon and Egypt. She has a sultry, seductive voice and gift for melody that is reminiscent of Souad Massi, and her best songs rely on acoustic guitar rather than the swirling synths. She specialises in songs about love (rather than love songs) and matches new settings for old Egyptian songs against a new piece written for a forthcoming Jim Jarmusch film, or an exquisite, thoughtful praise song to her former home: "Beirut, a flower out of its season, what a waste if it withered."

Review by Robin Denselow, The Guardian

Since forming electro duo Soapkills in the late 1990s, Beirut-born Hamdan has been reimagining Arabic tradition for modern times. This solo debut, made with French producer Marc Collin, updates the intense, sensual style of bygone divas such as Oum Kalthoum with elan, setting her sultry voice to acoustic-cum-synth arrangements and mixing antique songs with her own. There's plenty of dreamy pop, like Deny" and "Samar, but also political commentary on In Kan Fouadi (a 40s number) and longing and danger, nowhere more than Hal, written for Jim Jarmusch's imminent vampire flick Only Lovers Left Alive, where Hamdan has a cameo. Coolio.
