The earliest show on the Darkness tour to be released in the Archive Series, Berkeley 7/1/78 bristles with energy on songs like "Darkness On The Edge Of Town" and "Adam Raised A Cain," along with "Night" and "For You," both of which featured in the early months of the '78 tour. A memorable encore opens with Bruce's definitive solo-piano arrangement of "The Promise", the first live version of the song to be released from 1978, and offers only the second E Street Band performance ever of "Because The Night," with alternate lyrics.

Born in the U.S.A. (1984) is Springsteen's most commercially successful album, making him one of the most successful rock figures of the 1980s. It was certified 15× platinum in the US and has sold 30 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time. Seven of its singles reached the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 including the title track, which was a bitter commentary on the treatment of Vietnam veterans — some of whom were Springsteen's friends. Advocating for the rights of the common working-class man, the song made a huge political impact.[3] Springsteen's other best-known songs include "Born to Run" (1975), "Thunder Road" (1975), "Badlands" (1978), "Hungry Heart" (1980), "The River" (1980), "Atlantic City" (1982), "Dancing in the Dark" (1984), "I'm on Fire" (1984), "Glory Days" (1984), "Brilliant Disguise" (1987), "Human Touch" (1992), "Streets of Philadelphia" (1994), and "The Rising" (2002).

The December 13, 1992 Boston Garden show came in the midst of the Bruce Springsteen 1992–1993 World Tour, which saw The Boss hitting the road for the first time without the E Street Band (save for keyboardist Roy Bittan). Bruce had dissolved the band in 1989 and recorded the 1992 companion albums Human Touch and Lucky Town, of which the tour was in support, without his famed backing group.

Bruce Springsteen once said he intended to make an album with words like Bob Dylan that sounded like Phil Spector where he sang like Roy Orbison, a nifty summary of many, but not all, of his artistic ambitions and a key to his appeal. Unlike any of the other singer/songwriters saddled with the appellation of "the new Dylan" in the early '70s, Springsteen never hid how he was raised on '60s AM radio. He loved rock & roll, whether it was the initial blast from the '50s or the mini-symphonies from the days before the Beatles or the garage rockers that surfaced in the wake of the British Invasion, and all this could be heard within his wild, wooly collective the E Street Band, a group who debuted on his second album, 1973's The Wild The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle, and who would support him through most of his career.

The Tunnel of Love Express Tour's five-show station stop in Los Angeles wraps with this peak '88 performance on April 28. The core Tunnel setlist, including "Be True," "Brilliant Disguise," "Tougher Than The Rest," "I'm A Coward" and "Part Man, Part Monkey," has never sounded better. An irresistible encore features Arthur Conley's "Sweet Soul Music" and a deserving homage to Northwest garage rock, as Bruce covers The Sonics' "Have Love, Will Travel." Rarer still and even more meaningful is the seminal cover of Ry Cooder's majestic masterpiece, "Across The Borderline," the sound of which echoes through Springsteen's writing ever since.

Like Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and a few others, Bruce Springsteen transcends the boundaries of the musical genre in which one would try to encase him. Over the years, the New Jersey kid has become a symbol, both musical and ideological. Following in the footsteps of his idol Dylan, the Boss embarked on often poignant snapshots of this crumpled star banner, of the often abused American dream, in short the chronicle of an America on the fringes, of which he remains one of the most sparkling ambassadors… Few musicians have an aura as developed with their audience as he does. Since the beginning of his career in the mid-70s, he has not stopped touring, tirelessly filling stadiums and the largest halls in the world. In his early 60s, the Boss always puts so much soul into his concerts and on record, which explains the constant interest that his many fans have.

The lesser known fifth and final leg of the Joad tour comes into fresh view with Nice, France 1997. After 18 months on the road, Springsteen's solo acoustic performances were honed to a sharp edge, contrasted throughout with humor and soul. Nice 1997 offers nine songs from restless heart of Joad, plus captivating readings of "Darkness On The Edge Of Town," "Murder Incorporated," "It's The Little Things That Count," "Highway Patrolman," "Long Time Comin'," "Saint In The City," "Growin' Up" and the tour premiere of "You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch)."

When Bruce calls an audible to open a show with "I'm A Rocker," it portends a very special evening. St. Paul 11/12/12 is a welcome representative of the final US leg on the Wrecking Ball tour which saw it return to arenas. Beyond the auspicious starter, the first-rate St. Paul set features rare performances of "Night," "Loose Ends," "Something In The Night," "Stolen Car" and "The E Street Shuffle." Also, with the show falling on the night of the Veterans Day holiday, Springsteen debuts a full-band arrangement of "Devils & Dust," which serves as a stately showcase for the expanded 2012-13 E Street Band line-up.

Springsteen's first European tour culminates in a breathtaking return to London's Hammersmith Odeon for a 22-song set that is one of the standout shows on the Born To Run tour. London 11/24/75 features eight changes from opening night at Hammersmith six days prior, "Growin' Up" plus seven covers: "Pretty Flamingo," "Sha-La-La," "Wear My Ring Around Your Neck," "When You Walk In The Room," "Twist And Shout," "Carol" and "Little Queenie." Outstanding versions of "Thunder Road," "Lost In The Flood," "It's Hard To Be A Saint In The City, "For You" and "Quarter To Three" round out this triumphant performance.

Recorded to benefit the Special Olympics, this has some of the biggest names in contemporary music, most covering seasonal favorites with mixed success. Outstanding tracks include The Pretenders "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," with Chrissie Hynde giving a touching performance. Run-D.M.C.'s topical "Christmas in Hollis" relies heavily on sampling "Back Door Santa," and may head you toward the dance floor. Alison Moyet's stately version of "The Coventry Carol" is beautifully haunting. Only the Material Girl, Madonna, embarrasses herself with an overly campy "Santa Baby".

Letter to You comes quickly on the heels of Western Stars, a long-gestating 2019 immersion into the lush, progressive country vistas of the early 1970s, but in a sense, it's a true sequel to Bruce Springsteen's 2016 memoir Born to Run and its 2017 stage companion Springsteen on Broadway. It's an album where Springsteen reckons with the weight of the past, how its ghosts are still readily apparent in the present, an album where the veteran singer/songwriter is keenly aware he has more road in his rearview mirror than he does on the highway ahead of him. Springsteen does find himself drawn to the good old days, reviving three unrecorded songs from the days separating the split of his first band the Castiles and his contract with CBS, adding them to a clutch of new songs where Bruce ponders what it means to be the "Last Man Standing," surrounded by the spirits of old friends who may no longer be alive but are still a palpable psychic presence.

Originally broadcast live on radio stations across the Southeast, Atlanta 9/30/78 is the fifth and final Darkness tour transmission released in the Live Archive series. While not as familiar to fans as other '78 broadcasts, the blistering Atlanta performance more than holds its own and is newly mixed from Plangent Processed, multi-track analog master tapes. The 23-song show presents a potent core Darkness tour setlist augmented by the yet to be released "Independence Day" and "Point Blank," plus special additions "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town," "Raise Your Hand" and the only performance ever of James Brown's "Night Train."
