    Following up her critically acclaimed recording of Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber's Rosary Sonatas, violinist and musical director Rachel Podger leads Brecon Baroque on Just Biber, an album of Sonatas from Biber's 1681 collection Sonatæ Violino Solo and his theatrical Sonata Representivo. These works are extremely virtuosic with extensive multiple stopping and dazzling passages of stylus fantasticus. In Biber’s time, harmony was something cosmic, vibrating in a God-given resonance between human, instrumental and celestial bodies.     Zelenka understood better than virtually all of his contemporaries how to stretch the musical rules of his time; he composed in a highly complex, contrapuntal manner, employing long themes which often deviate from conventional structures. On top of this, Zelenka constantly uses unusually distant harmonies to intensify the expression of his music. With his absolute desire for expressivity and his courage to burst the musical bounds of the period, Zelenka counts as a modernist in Baroque music. The six trio sonatas recorded on this CD present the largest group of Zelenka's chamber music for a single ensemble. Despite their high quality they were forgotten for centuries; they were only rediscovered a few decades ago. Our fascination for this rich and profound music has spurred us on to come closer on this CD to the special tonal language, evocative complexity, and audacious invention of Zelenka’s music. A challenge, but also a special feature, of our work on these pieces has been the creation of a playable score on the basis of the surviving—barely readable and sometimes clearly erroneous—manuscript sources.

    If you mix every colour of paint together, you end up with black. Similarly, the darkness in the music of Lera Auberbach (b. 1973) consists of every imaginable shade of colour, from pitch darkness to dazzling light. The composer thus captures the mercuriality of life and the human psyche. Her music sometimes also depicts a dance with the inescapable: the struggle against Fate, the inexorable passing of time, an unattainable dream – but always with black humour and a dark though starlit sky. ‘Many composers create something “beautiful”, outside human reality,’ according to the Delta Piano Trio, who worked hard with Auberbach in preparing for this album. ‘Instead, Lera’s music is raw as well as human. She never eases up on what she wants to express, which would rob the music of all its fervour.’It was Auerbach’s own idea to call this album Milking Darkness. The Delta Piano Trio feels that it is a fitting description not only of her work as a whole but also of the intense effect her music can have.

    Octavie Dostaler-Lalonde: In 2018, I acquired a beautiful Baroque cello labeled J. M. Alban, fecit 17… a Graz. The instrument is of a smaller size than today’s standard cello, and the sound is silky, malleable and rich. I had heard of the existence of four-string violoncello piccolos (tuned G-d-a-e’) during the 17th and 18th centuries, and soon I decided to try this tuning on my small 18th-century cello. The result was impressive: the instrument’s tone became bright, crystalline and colourful, with an enhanced singing quality on the top string. This new voice of the Alban was an exciting discovery, and I set my mind to recording a full programme featuring my four-string violoncello piccolo.

Having had the opportunity to go to England both for the musical needs of the court and "on his own account," he stayed in London from the summer of 1603 to the summer of 1604. During this stay he published Lachrimae or Seaven Teares (1604), a collection he dedicated to Anne of Denmark, sister of Christian IV and, since 1589, wife of the new king, James I.

    In summer of 1923, Eugene Ysaÿe heard his friend Joseph Szigeti perform one of J.S. Bach’s Solo Violin Sonatas. Afterwards, on his way to a sojourn at the beach in Le Zoute, Ysaÿe couldn’t stop thinking about the performance: “When one hears an artist like Szigeti, who is able to accommodate his playing to the rectangular lines of the great classics as easily as he can to the expressive melodies of the romantics, one feels how absorbing it would be to compose a work for the violin whilst keeping ever before one the style of one particular violinist.” On arrival at the resort, Ysaÿe disappeared into his room for a couple of days and emerged with sketches of Six Violin Sonatas (Op. 27), each imagined with the sound and style of a specific artist ringing in his ears.

    What you get on this release by veteran countertenor Dominique Visse and the Capella de la Torre is something less accessible than what is suggested by the Vinum et Musica title but more accessible than the pedantic subtitle "Songs & dances from Nuremberg sources (15th & 16th century)." The collection of pieces here is a sort of tour of the city of Nuremberg, an important German city in Renaissance times but not one that was home to its own compositional school.

    Rachmaninov's ten chamber works, two of them left incomplete, all date from his late teens or early twenties. The 2 Pieces, Op 2 - Prélude and Danse orientale for cello and piano – date from 1891-2.
    The most widely performed of Rachmaninov's chamber compositions is the Cello Sonata. Rachmaninov completed this sonata in November 1901. On 2nd December the composer and the celebrated cellist Anatoly Brandukov, to whom the work is dedicated, gave the premiere in Moscow. Rachmaninov's sonata is a gem of the cello-sonata repertoire.
