Domenico Scarlatti’s well known keyboard sonatas (he composed over 600) influenced many composers who came after him – CPE Bach, Mozart, Clementi and Beethoven to name just a few. His father, Alessandro was a key figure in the late Italian baroque age. He composed a large amount of sacred music - cantatas, masses and oratorios but what is less known is his keyboard music. This album is the first recording of his keyboard music on a modern piano, revealing its grandeur, complex melodies and daring harmonic progressions.

“Italy, Florence—nothing gives me the slightest pleasure so far,” Tchaikovsky confessed to his brother. “I cannot live outside Russia.” Deep in the grip of depression, he nonetheless completed his tenth opera, The Queen of Spades, and began work on a string sextet that would become Souvenir de Florence, which he finished upon returning to Russia in June 1890. Despite his gloomy letters, traces of affection for Florence surface in the music. In the Adagio, wistful Russian folk melodies entwine with a theme inspired by the Italian city. Perhaps he cared for it more than he let on.

The sons of J.S. Bach continued an already remarkable musical dynasty well into the classical age and exerted a powerful influence over composers such as Mozart and Beethoven. Their illustrious father just lived to see the earliest fortepianos and professed to be unimpressed by the new instrument. C.P.E wrote a concerto for harpsichord and fortepiano, ushering in a new age, and saying goodbye to the baroque era.C.P.E was the most original composer of the sons (Beethoven admired him and recommended to Karl Czerny's father that his son study 'Emmanuel Bach's text book on the true manner of performing upon the pianoforte', and, in 1810 asked his publisher to send him all C.P.E's works).

James Ehnes picks up the viola for his first recording of the two Brahms sonatas Op.120 of 1894, in the composer's arrangement for viola and piano. Originally written for clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld, Brahms made subtle changes for the viola versions, and in so doing he greatly enriched the meagre viola sonata repertoire with these two late masterpieces. Schumann composed his Märchenbilder (Fairy Tale Pictures) in a few days in March 1851. They are imbued with a potent sense of fantasy - imagination runs riot, from melancholy to drama. James Ehnes plays on the 1696 'Achinto' Stradivari viola for this recording, courtesy of the Royal Academy of Music.

Violist Maxim Rysanov, who has spent much of his career in Britain, is one of the world's preeminent players of his instrument. When famed Russian violist Yuri Bashmet heard Rysanov play, he is said to have remarked, "My rival has arrived!" Rysanov also pursues a parallel career as a conductor. Rysanov was born in Kramatorsk in eastern Ukraine, then part of the Soviet Union, in 1978. He was sent to the Central Special Music School in Moscow, where he studied with Maria Sitkovskaya, and then took advantage of Russia's opening to the West in the 1990s and enrolled at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. There, he studied viola with John Glickman and conducting with Alan Hazeldine. In 2000, he won Guildhall's gold medal. As a violist, Rysanov has had a high-flying career since winning designation as a BBC New Generation Artist in 2007 and winning the Gramophone Young Artist of the Year in 2008.

The figure of the clown has always had associations with the carnivalesque, masks and madness. The ability of Pierrot to be melancholic yet murderous, a trickster yet romantic can easily be traced back to the commedia del arte tradition of the 17th century. However, more interesting still is the older tradition of Carnival. Pierrot's ability to rape, steal, commit bigamy and suicide while simultaneously offering protestations of love or playing practical jokes is understood clearly within the context of carnival, that medieval Feast of Fools replete with drunken orgies on the altar table, indecent gestures, disrobing. The festival upends order. Fools become kings, appetites, both sexual and gormandising replace restraint. Pierrot represents human vice, he is outside of the law, and thus outside of sin. He makes us dream of a life which is purely sensual and freed from the yoke of conscience. Claire Booth and Ensemble 360 explore the fascination with the multi-faceted Pierrot by composers as diverse as Thea Musgrave, Debussy, Korngold, Amy Beach and, of course Schoenberg's groundbreaking Pierrot Lunaire.

    Genre: Classical

Dejan Lazic has been making recordings since 1990, but this is his first live album. Recorded at the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad in August 2022. Dejan says of the live recording "certain artistic freedoms which come from the fact that this creative process is unrepeatable are equally unparalleled, one literally senses the immediate response from the audience so one acts and reacts upon that. Because if the intimacy and sheer uniqueness of a piano recital as such, no matter how large the venue is, there also comes into play a different sort of spontaneity, risk taking, and creativity." Viennese Rhapsody features composers who all had very close links with the city, though only Schubert was born there. The span from the 18th to the 20th century embraces works that have both rhapsodic and fantasy-like elements. Dejan features not only as pianist on this album, but as arranger and composer too.

‘From a musical point of view, but especially with regard to the stageworthiness of the work, these cuts represent an absolute improvement’ Bartok wrote to his publisher when he had finished his definitive revision of his Wooden Prince – cutting out much of the music relating to specific stage action, but also generally tightening the symphonic structure, making its large-scale mirror form appear clearer. Normally performed and recorded in its non-revised full-length version, it has been a joy now to follow Bartok’s inspired last wish revision of this mystic, vital, otherworldly, and grotesque fantasy music. The two String Quintets are considered to be among Brahms' greatest chamber works. The first was a favorite of the composer, and he wrote to his publisher that, 'you'll never receive anything more beautiful from me.' The second was written when Brahms had all but retired. When he delivered the work to the publisher he wrote, 'with this note you can take leave of my music, because it is high time to stop.' The Nash Ensemble, having recently celebrated their 40th anniversary, are having something of a golden period. Their previous Onyx discs of Turnage and Mendelssohn received rave reviews.

Composed in 1915, Szymanowski’s Mythes is a three movement work consisting of miniature tone poems based on Greek mythology. Late romantic and impressionist in style, the composer’s travels to Sicily and North Africa without doubt influenced the exotic and sumptuous sound world he created in this work. Mythes is the opening work on this eclectic recital album from James Ehnes and Andrew Armstrong. Also on this programme is Handel’s D major violin sonata – a once popular staple of the violin repertoire, now sadly seldom encountered. The album concludes with a selection of short and sparkly miniatures and encores. There are some old favourites here as well as new – James Newton Howard’s ‘133…At least’ is dazzling!

Piani was well enough regarded in his own time to get hired in Paris and then across the continent in Vienna, where he spent the last four decades of his life. He has been forgotten probably because the group of Sonatas, Op. 1, that are excerpted here are his sole surviving works. With the rise in popularity of Francesco Maria Veracini and the other Italians who took their music to France and England in the early 18th century, Piani is worth getting to know.

Three pianist-composers from the first half of the last century form the program for Joseph Moog's new album. For this recording he is joined by pianist Kai Adomeit in three works for two pianos - Rachmaninoff's late 1940 Symphonic Dances, York Bowen's 1951 Theme & Variations, and Rachmaninoff's friend and compatriot Medtner's Two Pieces. York Bowen had many works by Rachmaninoff in his extensive concert repertoire, and he became known as 'The English Rachmaninoff' without much reason. As strange as that sounds, like the two Russians on this recording (with Prokofiev), he represents the last of the great pianistic composers of the 20th century.
