Although The Beatles stole much of the Merseybeat limelight, The Big Three also gained quite a following amongst Cavern Club devotees with their blend of exciting and raw Rock and Roll. A career blighted by in-fighting, line up changes and clashes with their manager… some guy named Brian Epstein. This fab Retro Sixties compilation boasts their entire Decca catalogue plus 1973 reunion recordings. 'Cavern Stomp' is the complete collection of songs not just by some guys… but 'The Big Three'. A great gift idea for anyone into Retro, Sixties and Merseybeat culture.

This audiophile-approved anthology, mastered and compiled by Steve Hoffman, is the only one to combine Chris Montez' Monogram and A&M recordings on one disc. The most comprehensive Montez anthology yet produced, All-Time Greatest Hits includes every one of his Top 100 hits and more. The program begins with Montez' early recordings as a Ritchie Valens protége purveying teen dance songs like "My Baby Loves to Dance" and "Let's Dance" (his biggest hit), as well as his Herb Alpert-produced adult contemporary hits of the mid-'60s. The latter include "Call Me" and "The More I See You," breezy confections with a laid-back party atmosphere and Montez' appealing boy-next-door vocals. Apart from the hits, "You're the One" is a duet with Kathy Young of "A Thousand Stars" fame, and the disc leads off with a personal message from Montez recorded in 1991…

This second volume of producer Steve Hoffman's discoveries in the Chess Records vaults features some less-prominent Chuck Berry tunes, again in the form of demos, unreleased alternate takes, and stereo remixes. Listeners are getting into collector territory here, but there are still some enjoyable examples of the Berry repertoire.

Rock & roll's prime innovator, thanks to his detailed songwriting, dazzling lyrics, and clear, economical guitar licks.
Of all the early breakthrough rock & roll artists, none was more important to the development of the music than Chuck Berry. He was its greatest songwriter, the main shaper of its instrumental voice, one of its greatest guitarists, and one of its greatest performers. Quite simply, without him there would be no Beatles, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, nor myriad others. There would be no standard "Chuck Berry guitar intro," the instrument's clarion call to get the joint rockin' in any setting. The clippety-clop rhythms of rockabilly would not have been mainstreamed into the now standard 4/4 rock & roll beat…

Chuck Berry's debut LP is fairly strong musically, as well as having a really cool cover (a still shot of Berry, guitar slung in front of him, from the movie Rock, Rock, Rock!). After School Session was just the second long-player ever issued by Chess - only the soundtrack to the movie Rock, Rock, Rock! preceded it. This May 1957 release made Berry something of a late-bloomer among rock & roll's foundation performers - he'd had his first recording session two years earlier, in May of 1955, and by the spring of 1957, Bill Haley already had a handful of LPs to his credit, Elvis Presley was gaining on him, and Clyde McPhatter's version of the Drifters was represented on album, with numerous others soon to join their ranks. Berry had actually enjoyed only two major pop (i.e. rock as opposed to R&B) chart hits at the time: "Maybellene" in the summer of 1955, and "Roll Over Beethoven," which had just made the Top 30 in the summer of 1956…

"In our imaginations, John was Buddy Holly and I was Little Richard." So said Paul McCartney many moons ago, admitting the key influences on both himself and John Lennon in terms of the pair’s initial vocal styling. In fact, Messrs Holly and Penniman were just two artists whose impact on The Beatles was evident from the band’s choice of cover tunes. Indeed, all of the tracks featured on this bespoke Mojo compilation were covered by John, Paul, George and Ringo during the band’s formative period.
Our 15-track collection starts with The Isley Brothers’ uproarious 1959 hit, Shout. The Beatles themselves first cut their version at London’s IBC Studios on April 19, 1964, for inclusion in Jack Good’s TV extravaganza, Around The Beatles. The latter was broadcast in the UK on May 6 and November 15 in the US…

Berry Is On Top (1959). If you had to sweat all of Chuck Berry's early albums on Chess (and some, but not all, of his subsequent greatest-hits packages), this would be the one to own. The song lineup is exemplary, cobbling together classics like "Maybellene," "Carol," "Sweet Little Rock & Roller," "Little Queenie," "Roll Over Beethoven," "Around and Around," "Johnny B. Goode," and "Almost Grown." With the addition of the Latin-flavored "Hey Pedro," the steel guitar workout "Blues for Hawaiians," "Anthony Boy," and "Jo Jo Gunne," this serves as almost a mini-greatest-hits package in and of itself. While this may be merely a collection of singles and album ballast (as were most rock & roll LPs of the 1950s and early '60s), it ends up being the most perfectly realized of Chuck Berry's career…

Little Bob Story was a French rock band with strong rhythm 'n' blues influences. The band was fronted and formed by Italian born Roberto Piazza in Le Havre in 1974. Their first album "Off The Rails" ("Living in the Fast Lane" in France) was released on Chiswick records in the UK in 1977, and the band successfully rode the pub rock wave along with the likes of Dr. Feelgood and Graham Parker And The Rumour.
"Livin' In The Fast Lane" is an infectious, oomph-packed slab of dynamism which drew from the same inspirational well as punk rock.

Elvis: Close Up is part of an ongoing series of Elvis Presley box sets BMG has created to keep collectors supplied with "new" material, in a manner of speaking. All 89 of the recordings are previously unreleased mixes and alternate takes, with each disc focusing on a different period of Elvis' career. The first disc contains stereo mixes of recordings from 1957, including "Jailhouse Rock" and "I Beg of You." These mixes, created from the binaural session tapes, will be worth the price for many stereophiles. The second disc has alternate takes of songs from four of Elvis' early-'60s movie soundtracks, with all of the recordings hailing from 1960 and 1961. Disc three is titled "The Magic of Nashville" and features Nashville recordings mainly from the early '60s…

Capitol Records initially planned to release a live album from the Beatles in 1964, recording the band's August 23 concert at the Hollywood Bowl. Nobody at the label found the results satisfactory so they attempted it again almost exactly a year later, taping the August 29 and 30, 1965 shows at the Hollywood Bowl but, once again, it proved hard to hear the Fab Four from underneath the roar of the crowd, so those tapes were also shelved. They remained in the vaults until 1977, when Capitol president Bhaskar Menon asked George Martin to assemble a listenable live album from the two sets of Hollywood Bowl tapes, all with the idea of combating the rise of bootlegs and quasi-legit Beatles live albums…

Born in Ontario and raised near Detroit, Jack Scott was one of the most potent first-generation rockers to come out of the Midwest. If Scott's style wasn't quite rockabilly, it was somewhere in the ballpark, and on his best sides he conjured up the same swagger and menace that Link Wray made with an electric guitar. Scott's hits were few and far between, but no one who has heard "Leroy," "The Way I Walk" or "What Am I Living For" is likely to forget them anytime soon. Like many early rockers, Scott would later cut significantly more polished country and pop sides after he stopped having hits with the harder stuff, but true to its title, Jack Rocks concentrates on the cream of Scott's rock & roll sides (cut between 1957 and 1964), and it's one of the best Jack Scott collections extant…

This double-CD set presents a real conundrum, on a lot of levels. For starters, on its face, 55 songs may well seem like overkill to the casual fan who only knows or remembers (or thinks they only remember) five or six big hits by Paul Revere & the Raiders. And there are more modest single-CD collections to be found on this band that seem less daunting. But as it turns out - for those who give this set a try - Paul Revere & the Raiders did have just enough hits, when coupled with a sufficient number of respected album tracks and B-sides, to sustain a double-CD set. And that goes double for anyone who likes plain old rock & roll - even when this band got ambitious and a little bit progressive and serious, they never lost sight of the value of a great beat and carefully placed vocal and instrumental hooks, and they were always fun…

During more than half a century as a prolific and uncommonly versatile recording artist, Jimmy McCracklin made a lot of great blues and soul records. He also did more than his share of rocking. That’s the side of the Bay Area piano pounder’s massive discography that this jam-packed compilation concentrates on, McCracklin tears through his 1958 smash The Walk and plenty more, showing himself to be a highly distinctive artist with a penchant for potential dance crazes, driving rhythms, and intriguing lyrics that often told vivid slice-of-life tales of the gin joints he played at.
