Over the last 15 years, Jordi Savall has been exploring the links between Western and Eastern repertoires because he regards this work as a way to develop a better mutual understanding. In this new album, Hespèrion XXI plays alongside the ensemble Orpheus 21, created by him in the wake of the recent migrant crisis to welcome mu sicians from countries stricken by war, hunger or disasters to draw attention to the dignity shared of all humankind. The idea - prevailing during the Middle Ages - of a light coming from the East («ex Oriente Lux») is actualized in this album with the fr uitful encounter of repertoires from Syria, Bangladesh, Kurdistan, Afghanistan, Greece, Lebanon, Ira q , Morocco, Tunisia and Turkey.

This interpretation is a perfect match to Savall's equally beautiful Art of the Fugue. Here you find even more variety in the blend of instruments. I am not going to have only one version of this music and my first recommendation is Münchinger's more emotional recording on Decca. When it comes to colourful instrumentation, however, Savall is the winner, and the direction & playing needs no justification, it is simply wonderful, even if I doubt this folk music style reflects the spirit of the baroque era.

Deluxe remastering of three albums that include the three most famous songbooks of the Golden Age (1451-1595). The Sevillian Cancionero de la Colombina and Cancionero Musical de Medinaceli are samples of a musical humanism with a distinctly Hispanic stamp, in which the cultured and the popular come together. The Castilian Cancionero de Palacio is the most valuable and representative jewel of the repertoire performed in the itinerant Courts of the Catholic Kings, including songs, Christmas carols, ballads and ‘extravagances’ by authors such as Encina, Millán, Escobar, Anchieta, and Peñalosa. La Capella Reial de Catalunya, Hespèrion XX and Jordi Savall made them known to the world through these famous recordings made between 1991 and 1992.

My interest and fascination for the work of Joseph Haydn date back to 1960-64, when I was completing my music and cello studies at the Barcelona Conservatoire and had the opportunity to discover and study some of the composer’s most beautiful quartets. During that time, two special pocket scores always accompanied in my apprenticeship of musical forms and the fascinating discovery of great masterpieces of musical creation: one was J. S. Bach’s The Art of Fugue and the other Haydn’s The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross. Two wonderful works that I later recorded under the ASTRÉE label a few years after having founded and prepared the appropriate music ensembles: L’Art de la Fugue, recorded in March, 1986, with 4 solo wind instruments and 4 violas da gamba from the ensemble HESPÈRION XX, following a year of concerts throughout Europe to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Bach’s birth. It was followed four years later, in December, 1990, by the recording of Haydn’s Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross, two years after the creation of the orchestra LE CONCERT DES NATIONS.

Cette nouvelle réédition du célèbre enregistrement réalisé en 1985 à Radio France nous propose de somptueuses retrouvailles avec un bouquet d'interprètes devenus de véritables « stars » du baroque avec le temps. Jordi Savall devait accéder au sommet du hit-parade et de la reconnaissance internationale six ans plus tard avec la bande originale qu'il signa pour Tous les matins du monde, le film d'Alain Corneau sur un argument de Pascal Quignard qui racontait l'histoire du violiste et compositeur Marin Marais et de son maître Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe, respectivement interprétés par Gérard Depardieu et Jean-Pierre Marielle.
