Music producer Steven Wilson considers King Crimson's 1970 album "Lizard" to be one of the most experimental rock records ever made, noting its unique fusion of free-jazz and progressive rock. This assessment was first made in 2009 when Wilson worked on the stereo and 5.1 mixes of the album with Robert Fripp, and has been confirmed by his new 2025 mixes. The 2009 mixes, despite being released alongside more famous King Crimson albums like "Red" and "In The Court Of The Crimson King," helped to focus fan attention on "Lizard," which was often overlooked in the band's catalogue. "Lizard" was notable for its expanded lineup, the infusion of jazz players, a radical departure from the band's previous work, and the fact that the lineup never performed live.
