SHAMBLEMATHS is the new project by Norwegian duo Simen Å. ELLNGSEN and Eirik M. HUSUM. This band is actually a direct contiuation of their first collaboration as a duo formed in their student days in 2004 under the name Fallen Fowl. That collaboration actually started as a side project to the band TiaC that was active in the early 2000. Now they've returned as SHAMBLEMATHS with an edgier sound and approach, adding more influences from Magma, Univers Zero and Egg. The band plays an eclectic mix of countless styles and the music is pretty much all over the place, exploring both melodic and quirky areas. Their self titled album was released in the spring of 2016. Shamblemaths 2: If this isn't good enough, we can't help you! The second album is darker, heavier, knottier, yet also more fragile, more vulnerable.

Cycle I (2007). This French band incorporate two Fender Rhodes players, a female vocalist, drums, bass and sax. James MacGaw from One Shot and Magma guests on guitar here as well. By the way Udi Koomran mastered this beauty. To the casual prog fan this venture by French band Setna just might be the best way of approaching the Zeuhl brand. The mad and overtly gibberish laden characteristics that often sound like showering opera singers and piano playing walruses here are exchanged for something softer and far sweeter…

February 29, 2020: like wild beasts, we stormed the stage of Penmarc'h, the first concert of our tour. Then came Nantes, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Perpignan and Saint-Étienne. Every night, the band, honed like a blade, leapt at the chance for battle! In Besançon, our momentum was thrown off by an offbeat. ESKAHL captures the concerts of this new MAGMA and its new line-up, more vibrant than ever! Magma is there, will always be there. And nothing – no, nothing! – will stop us!

Improvisation x Prog-Improvisation capital letters, the 4th album for the first time in 14 years since 2006 mixes a large amount of unorganized live recordings during the self-restraint period, and summarizes the selected sound sources in a set of 3 A blockbuster! Guitar Natsuki Kido participates in one song (30-minute masterpiece) as a guest. This trio of keyboard, bass and drums sets their own rules, delivering a hard and enthusiastic product that is totally improvised. Like some kind of super-powered prog engine, their music is a collection of moods that burst into challenging sequences of zeuhl-flavored jazz. The band consists of keyboard player and vocalist Hoppy Kamiyama (of Japanese pop band PINK), drummer Tatsuya Yoshida (from RUINS) and bassist Nasuno Mitsuni (from ALTERED STATES and KOREKYOJIN). Absolutely recommended to fans of RUINS and MAGMA; in fact, to anyone looking for some challenging and exciting fusion.

Potemkine's third and final album is their strongest, and is something of an overlooked classic of late 70s prog. Following Triton the band became a quartet again with Michel Goubin back on keyboards, and there had also been a period of intense gigging including opening for Magma on several occasions. All this made for a much tighter and more confident band than previously, both in terms of writing and playing.
The sound of Nicholas II takes the Zeuhl of Magma's Attahk and adds the jazz fusion of Mahavishnu Orchestra, Brand X and Billy Cobham circa Spectrum. The arrangements are dominated by the interplay of electric piano and guitar, with Charles Goubin turning in some excellent lead guitar work…

As stated before, this album is rather short, but man is it dense. This seems to be the perfect synthesis between the "old" more "violent" Magma and the "new" more vocal oriented Magma, and it is excellent. Highly recommended to adventurous listeners who enjoy intense, transcendental listening experiences.

A four disc boxset of all original Offering albums, remastered, plus a 32 min bonus track: "Out Of This World". This boxset nowadays is the only way to purchase Offering's studio albums. Offering came to the world as one of Christian Vander's post Magma projects, functioning throughout the later half of the 80s up till the early 90s Offering ventures into territory where only Magma's 'Merci' dared the tread. While the 70s Magma revolved around a more classical interpretation, Offering shows Vander's fascination with Coltrane's acoustic inspired Jazz blossom into full realization. Offering is sited by many as Christian Vander's most praised post-Magma project.

Take Magma, Area and ELP at their most excessive, feed them an overdose of caffeine and you'll get the gist of what Koenjihyakkei sound like. Or imagine the speed of Deus Ex Machina and then add many more tempo changes and musical ideas. Anyone not ready for some insane, amphetamine-driven prog are advised to stay clear of this foursome. As for others, they're in for the musical roller coaster of their lives. Headed by vocalist, composer and drummer extraordinaire Tatsuya Yoshida, this Zeuhl quartet is an offshoot of Japanese cult duo Ruins. All of the group's albums are insanely hyper, all exploding with flashy keyboard lines, intricate death-metal guitar riffs, speedy, convoluted bass/drum patterns, operatic female vocals that border on apocalyptic war cries and chanted in a language of their own (a nod to Magma); all this combined with a superhuman technique and catchy, complex arrangements.

Dup Et Doux #DD 027

French trio, that know no limitations and prohibitions. Impressive and delirious, the trio combines raw madness and virtuosity, they dance and dash between the energy of punk, the beauty of chamber music and the chaos of a factory on the brink of explosion. Sus, the new album of the ultra-speed superhero trio is steeped in maturity. The record consists of two epic 20 minute pieces where humour gives up its place to lyricism and Occitan poetry. Serenades of love, sky and sea intercourse, mad dogs shrieking from the bottom of a well…. PoiL have removed their red costumes and donned troubadour’s cap, ostensibly calmer but forever close to madness.

Rïah Sahïltaahk is listed by most sources as a new studio album by Magma but it is in fact simply a re-recording of the first track of the same name from their second album. Apparently, Magma’s leader, Christian Vander, was never satisfied with the original 21-minute arrangement of Rïah Sahïltaahk that appeared on 1971’s "1001 Degrees Centigrades". Thus, over 40 years later, he has set out to rectify the situation. And the result? There are plenty of familiar passages throughout this 24-minute version. However, Vander has broken up the original single-track piece into seven separately-named tracks. Also gone are the horns of the 1971 recording, notably the distinctive bass clarinet of Yochk’o Seffer. In the place of the brass and woodwinds, we get guitar, vibraphone, and female vocals. All in all, not a bad tradeoff. Also, due to modern technology, this EP has a cleaner, clearer mix than the original.
