The first 10 years of Magma were celebrated with the music written by Christian Vander on three memorable evenings in June 1980 at the Olympia theatre in Paris. This retrospective, reuniting most of the musicians who had performed in the group, was issued as two albums, Retrospektïẁ 1/2 (Double) and Retrospektïẁ 3 (Single). Issued first, Retrospektïẁ 3 comprises 3 titles, Retrovision, a long piece in the style of the album Attahk, in which the vocalists Stella Vander, Guy Khalifa and Maria Popkiewicz turn in a blazing performance over a driving rhythm section, followed by a supercharged version of Hhai, in which the trio Lockwood/Paganotti/Widemann works miracles. And finally La Dawotsin, where, in a more muted register, Christian Vander’s voice triumphs through its mastery and profound sensibility.

Zëss had long been plagued by its incompleteness and its recording was deferred for years. Four decades after its first draft, the work has finally been recorded in an orchestral version that gives it both its true dreamlike dimension and its transcending power. For Zëss is above all the visionary reflection of an immemorial dream haunting the most obscure part of our souls. Zëss treads a line between a vital overflowing and the edges of the unlivable. It is an incandescent and heady oratorio where consciousness questions its other side in a measureless journey. Zëss indicates the ultimate reversal out of which bursts a beyond of music that only music can reach. Magma’s whole story condensed…

This particular concert, recorded in Bourges in 1979, stands out as a moment of grace, partly due to its extreme tension and the risks taken collectively, which the audience still reminisces of to this day.

Initially released under Vander's name as a soundtrack studio album for Yvan Lagrange's 1972 avant-garde film Tristan et Iseult, it was re-released on Magma's label Seventh Records in 1989 with the Magma logo on its cover, and is generally regarded as a Magma album.

Weidorje, formed in 1977 by two ex-Magma members, Bernard Paganotti and Patrick Gauthier (also keyboardist for Heldon, a group that featured Richard Pinhas) is one of Zheul's children, probably the most faithful and the closest musically and spiritually to Magma. One can find a mythology close to Magma's one: "the wait of a flying saucer that would come one morning take us with its new values, sane and safe".
Weidorje means "celestial wheel". This word appears for the very first time in Magma's album "Üdü Wüdü" in the form of a short track (4:30) composed by Paganotti and Blasquiz, the latter being the second master brain in Magma, along with Vander (Blasquiz achieved by the way Weidorje's cover art)…

2020/2021. More than 18 months without being able to make a gig. This space of time, this imposed "pause", was used to prepare a new album, a group album, as we had not realized for a long time.
Following the creation of a new line-up in 2020, we once again offered musicians to bring songs, Christian Vander never having made the deliberate choice to be Magma's sole composer. But in fact, none of the dozens of musicians who participated in this adventure had offered a new song for decades !
After "ZËSS", which hinted at a rather gloomy future, this bright and resolutely optimistic new album is the result of a collective work, an "Operation Kartëhl".

Due to COVID-19, the French avant-garde band Magma was unable to perform live, so they decided to dive into the studio to create new material. This resulted in a brand new album titled Kãrtëhl, a collective album such as they have not made in a long time. The band reformed in 2020 and added new musicians to the lineup, which created opportunities for new innovative compositions. After the rather dark 2019 Zëss, this new work Kãrtëhl features bright and resolutely optimistic collective new work, the result of an “Operation Kartëhl”. Kãrtëhl includes 6 new tracks and an additional 2 bonus tracks, which are demos from Christian Vander's personal collection, recorded at home in 1978.

Whether you get it or you don’t, Magma’s music is still growing stronger and stronger each day to blow those doors down with a giant battering ram ready to burst through. Sung in the styles of the Kobaïan language created by founder Christian Vander, they created forms of Jazz, Opera, Classical, Soul, Avant-Rock, and Progressive music for fifty-two years. This year Magma have released their 19th release from AKT series which covers their archival and musical live recordings. This 2-CD set consists of performances they did for their aborted French tour in Bourdeaux, Toulouse, and Perpignan on March 6, 7, and 8th before everything shut down due to the pandemic and COVID-19.

Mekanïk Destruktïẁ Kommandöh, also abbreviated as MDK, is the third studio album by French rock band Magma, released on 6 May 1973. The album marks a shift away from the jazz style of the band's first two albums, encompassing progressive rock, contemporary classical, avant-garde music, funk and gospel in it's musical style. Magma's original recording of the composition that makes up the album was refused by the record company at the time, but was eventually released as Mekanïk Kommandöh in 1989. MDK is the group's most famous and acclaimed record. The French edition of Rolling Stone magazine named the album the 33rd greatest French rock album. In 2015, Rolling Stone ranked the album 24th on its list of the '50 Greatest Prog Rock Albums of All Time'.

UDU WUDU (1976) saw the return of Jannick TOP to the heart of MAGMA, a reunion desired passionately by Christian VANDER, who asked Jannick to collaborate as co-leader in the creation of this record. The new MAGMA line-up not being final at the time the recording took place, the basics of the work were laid down by VANDER and TOP, who besides their usual instruments brilliantly integrated the keyboard parts into the tracks. The musical voyage into which they draw us is performed in two sections, the first containing short pieces with diverse atmospheres and styles, which use the brass and flutes of the early albums, and the the second comprising the 18 minute composition by Jannick TOP, DE FUTURA. Completely dfferent in apearance, the two sections are in fact complementary, the first being designed to put the listener in the most receptive state of mind before the arrival of the music cataclysm represented by DE FUTURA. A monumental work, this piece generates, by means of the titanic force of the bass and drums, an incredible power which gives it the unquestionable status of a mythic work.

February 29, 2020: like wild beasts, we stormed the stage of Penmarc'h, the first concert of our tour. Then came Nantes, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Perpignan and Saint-Étienne. Every night, the band, honed like a blade, leapt at the chance for battle! In Besançon, our momentum was thrown off by an offbeat. ESKAHL captures the concerts of this new MAGMA and its new line-up, more vibrant than ever! Magma is there, will always be there. And nothing – no, nothing! – will stop us!

As stated before, this album is rather short, but man is it dense. This seems to be the perfect synthesis between the "old" more "violent" Magma and the "new" more vocal oriented Magma, and it is excellent. Highly recommended to adventurous listeners who enjoy intense, transcendental listening experiences.
