Deep Forest is the first studio album by the musical group Deep Forest, consisting of French duo Eric Mouquet and Michel Sanchez. The album mixes New Age electronics with UNESCO field recordings of music from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Solomon Islands, Burundi, Tibesti, and the Sahel. Deep Forest was nominated for the Grammy Award as Best World Music Album in 1994. For Sanchez and Mouquet, the most important purpose of the album was to express their own fascination with the Efe people, and open the world's ears to the exquisite sound of a quickly vanishing culture. As Mouquet noted, "It's not very often you can hear a Pygmy singing on the radio."

This masterpiece is the culmination of a fervent collaboration with the rising stars of the electro realm, including the scintillating talents of Fakear, Samifati, Alune Wade.

Pangea is the second project from Dan Lacksman, the man behind the new age studio dance troupe, Deep Forest. Like Deep Forest, Pangea attempts to fuse danceable polyrhythms with worldbeat textures and synthesizers. On the whole, Pangea has a stronger world music influence than Deep Forest, which means it isn't quite as accessible. Nevertheless, Lacksman's knack is for making foreign musics palatable to Western tastes and, at its best, Pangea fulfills that promise quite effectively.

Innovatively fusing traditional ethnic musics with state-of-the-art rhythms, the work of Deep Forest was best typified by their 1993 "Sweet Lullaby," which brought together the contemporary sounds of ambient techno with a haunting traditional lullaby from the Solomon Islands. The project was primarily the work of the French keyboardists and programmers Eric Mouquet and Michael Sanchez; after the latter returned from Africa with boxes of records he'd picked up across the continent, he and Mouquet began sampling the native sounds for use with their atmospheric dance tracks, and with the aid of producer Dan Lacksman, their eponymous debut LP appeared in 1993. Propelled by the international hit "Sweet Lullaby," Deep Forest was a surprise success; Mouquet and Sanchez soon began work on a follow-up, this time exploring such areas as Mongolia, India, and Hungary, recording several tracks with singer Marta Sebestyen…

The compositions are interesting, original, and beautiful. The arrangements and integrated use of electronics are world-class in their sophistication and innovation. And Michel's synthesizer and piano playing place him among the very best multikeyboardists in the world. He has serious classical piano chops, and they are on display in gorgeous and delicate fashion here. But his synth playing is really standout.

International violin star Catherine Lara has been playing around the world for nearly three decades and the experience and worldliness that she brings to her playing shows on this album. Featuring Eric Mouquet of Deep Forest, the album journeys around a world of musical textures, always held together by the clear tones of Lara's violin.

The '90s version of prog-rock meets the real thing on 1995's Deseo Remixes. Global Communication, Trans-Global Underground, Future Sound of London, and Deep Forest each contribute remixes of the world music project by Yes' Jon Anderson. The Deep Forest and Global Communication tracks are the highlights.

Dao Dezi is a co-production of Eric Mouquet (one half of the Deep Forest duo) and Guilain Joncheray (executive producer of Deep Forest's debut album).
Fans of Deep Forest should know what to expect - precise electronic drums and basslines, mesmerizing stereophonic loops, sampled chanting and softly droning synthetic pads form the background for the various male singers. The singing on most of the tracks is energetic and very fast and even if you understand the French and Breton lyrics you may find it hard to sing along (and with melodies as catchy as these you will probably want to!). The singing is complemented with brilliant instrumental passages played on bagpipes, bombardes, violons and various whistles and pipes. All very competently and professionally played and contributing to the "world music" sound of the album.
