Organ and mellotron laden heavy and dark progressive rock creating a real tonal 70's soundscape. Standarte's jams draw heavy shades of Atomic Rooster, Deep Purple and Italy's Nuova Idea. Vocals are convincingly sung in English with some spoken parts which adds a real ethereal quality to the albums. Without a question when these lads get sailing their music is rich, profound and highly addictive.

Formed in December 1968, by organist Tim Hinkley, Jody Grind was a powerful trio influenced by the dominance of such notable keyboard led bands as The Nice, Vincent Crane's work with The Crazy World of Arthur Brown and Traffic. Hinkley formed the first version of the band with guitarist Ivan Zagni and drummer Martin Harriman. In June 1969 the band signed to Transatlantic Records (a UK independent label more widely associated with folk music who were seeking to develop an "underground" roster) and recorded their debut album "One Step On", released in October 1969 (and also released by Esoteric Recordings), By the beginning of 1970, Jody Grind had settled to a new line up of Tim Hinkley, guitarist and vocalist Bernie Holland and drummer Pete Gavin. Recorded in the early months of 1970, the band's second album, "Far Canal" was a fine work. The quality of material such as 'We've Had It', 'Jump Bed Jed' and 'Bath Sister' was outstanding.

A double-disc compilation of over two and a half hours of remixes, Auntie Aubrey's Excursions Beyond the Call of Duty, Pt. 1 includes Orb reworkings of well-known bands (Primal Scream, Erasure, Depeche Mode, Killing Joke) and more obscure acts (Keiichi Suzuki, Love Kittens). Several mixes sound a bit dated, and the scattershot quality of the set can distract listeners, but the inclusion of several epiphanous moments (Material's "Praying Mantra," Primal Scream's "Higher Than the Sun," and Sun Electric's "O'Locco") makes the album worthwhile for fans.

If you like your contemporary jazz crooners smooth and sweet, then likely John Pizzarelli is your main man above today's many post-Sinatra posers. This recording is as solid an effort as he has offered musically, or in terms of his stance and intelligent selection of material. While his guitar playing is subsumed, it is nonetheless precious, and when occasionally paired alongside his father, Bucky Pizzarelli, priceless. The surrounding cast is outstanding, with bassists Milt Hinton, Ron Carter, or Michael Moore; drummers Butch Miles or Connie Kay; and especially the great pianist Dave McKenna – along with cameos from trumpeter Clark Terry and violinist Johnny Frigo.

A reissue of an album originally released in Japan in 1994 under the title Voice Mail, 1995's Battle Lines continues John Wetton's career path over the preceding 15 years – there's more pop than prog in his prog pop, in other words. Basically indistinguishable from a late-period Asia album, the ten tracks on Battle Lines were mostly co-written by Wetton and keyboardist Bob Marlette. The re-release garnered a new cover and bonus track - acoustic version of the title track.

Recorded during and immediately following R.E.M.'s disaster-prone Monster tour, New Adventures in Hi-Fi feels like it was recorded on the road. Not only are all of Michael Stipe's lyrics on the album about moving or travel, the sound is ragged and varied, pieced together from tapes recorded at shows, soundtracks, and studios, giving it a loose, careening charm. New Adventures has the same spirit of much of R.E.M.'s IRS records, but don't take the title of New Adventures in Hi-Fi lightly – R.E.M. tries different textures and new studio tricks. "How the West Was Won and Where It Got Us" opens the album with a rolling, vaguely hip-hop drum beat and slowly adds on jazzily dissonant piano. "E-Bow the Letter" starts out as an updated version of "Country Feedback," then it turns in on itself with layers of moaning guitar effects and Patti Smith's haunting backing vocals. Clocking in at seven minutes, "Leave" is the longest track R.E.M. has yet recorded and it's one of their strangest and best – an affecting minor-key dirge with a howling, siren-like feedback loop that runs throughout the entire song.

Though purists will find Erroll Garner's This Is Jazz frustratingly incomplete, it isn't designed for them. The entire This is Jazz series is targeted at casual fans and neophytes, who only want a sampling of a famous jazz artist. In that sense, this disc does its job quite well, illustrating Garner's gift for swing and ballads. Of course, this only is the tip of the iceberg as far as Garner's music is concerned, but it's enough to spark the interest of anyone wanting to explore his vast catalog.

Unlike Duke Ellington's sideman, who often recorded under their own names in the 30s and early 40s, the stars of the Count Basie orchestra had few similar opportunities. However, many of Basie’s best musicians did grace small-group sessions led by Teddy Wilson, Billie Holiday and Lionel Hampton, all of which are available on Classics. The present CD collates four informal studio encounters featuring the Basie alumni, a series of sessions never previously issued together on one CD.

The critically-acclaimed ensemble Mala Punica came into the limelight by the mid-Nineties with three illustrious, multi-award winning discs on Arcana, which revolutionized the world of medieval music: Ars subtilis Ytaliaca, D’Amor ragionando and En attendant. We have here what looks to be the last of Mala Punica's series on the Arcana label, and the most sophisticated yet. This is based on a program made up of pieces which quote others, and the resulting web of allusions is quite sophisticated, as is the literary style of the liner notes. Quite a nut to crunch.
