The present release comprises two works by Russian composers of differing generations, in music which has long been central to the repertoire of composer and conductor ?lvaro Cassuto who is heard conducting the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra. Even before the Prokofiev's ballet Romeo and Juliet had made it to the stage, selections were heard in concert on both sides of the Atlantic, and various sequences continue to feature prominently in the orchestral repertoire. Although these sometimes take the guise of one of the three orchestral suites, it has become more common to select freely from across these or even from the overall ballet. Establishing dramatic and musical continuity within this context is more difficult than might be supposed, to which end Cassuto had devised his own selection on this present recording.

We never planned for this album. It’s a response to the sad and sudden loss of our incomparable colleague, Ariane Prüssner, who died tragically from undiagnosed lung cancer, early in May 2021.
Immediately, we realised that we had a wonderful legacy of these two soundtracks which were both recorded in the summer of 2020 in two very short sessions, each of three hours, which were never intended for release but were recorded for use as the soundtrack to two ‘art-house filmed versions’ of our concertplays Vision (the imagine testimony of Hildegard of Bingen) and Unsung Heroine (the imagined life and love of woman troubadour Beatriz de Dia).

With the title "Irish Minimalism", composer Dave Flynn has laid down a marker. Minimalism is associated with America, and specifically with composers like Steve Reich and Philip Glass (both of whom have spent a good portion of their careers disavowing the term). But the hallmarks of the style – repetition; gradual, incremental changes that accrue over time; steady rhythms, often drawn from popular or traditional music; and a restrained sense of harmonic movement – are all compatible with Irish traditional music. And after years spent as both a composer and performer working in the dual worlds of contemporary classical music and traditional song, Flynn has fashioned a personal musical language by recognizing that the differences between those two styles are not nearly as great, and certainly not as useful, as the similarities.

The second volume of Roman Rabinovich's complete cycle of Haydn Piano Sonatas, with each volume featuring Rabinovich's iPad drawings.The pianist has earned critical praise for his explorations of the piano music of Haydn, which include his 42 sonata cycle at the 2018 Bath International Festival. Haydn was a prominent and prolific Austrian composer of the Classical period and composed 62 keyboard sonatas. Written over a 40 year period or so, and displaying a variety of styles, the earlier sonatas were written for harpsichord and the last for the newly developed hammer-action fortepiano.

The following year, Schumann wrote no works for solo piano, focusing a new energy in writing songs. 1840 is famously known as his "Year of Song" ("Liederjahr"), hence our coined title "Year of Piano" with all the works on this album, apart from three "Stücklein", written in 1838. This is Papastefanou’s third album for FHR.

Brown was First Prize winner of the Concert Artists Guild Competition, a winner of the Bowers Residency from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (formerly CMS Two), a recipient of the Juilliard Petschek Award, and is a Steinway Artist. He earned dual bachelor's and master's degrees in piano and composition from The Juilliard School, where he studied with pianists Jerome Lowenthal and Robert McDonald and composers Samuel Adler and Robert Beaser. Additional mentors have included Andrs Schiff and Richard Goode as well as his early teachers, Herbert Rothgarber and Adam Kent. Noctuelles features two 20th century gems of the piano literature Ravel's Miroirs and Medtner's Second Improvisation, Op 47. The first movement of Miroirs is inspired by the above line by Ravel's close friend, poet Lon-Paul Fargue. The word 'noctuelles' is an obscure description of moths in French, not widely used, and reflects Ravel's penchant for the mysterious.

This programme reflects all of the four musical Mendelssohn siblings except Rebecka, who tends to be left out. ‘My older brother and sister stole my reputation as an artist,’ she said sadly. ‘In any other family I would have been highly regarded as a musician and perhaps been leader of a group. Next to Felix and Fanny, I could not aspire to any recognition.’ The youngest, Paul, the only one born in Berlin after the family moved from Hamburg, contented himself with following his father and uncle into banking; but he was an excellent amateur cellist, and it is to his prowess as a private performer that we owe almost everything on this album.
