After Janiva Magness added a 2016 Grammy nomination to her 27 Blues Music Award nominations - with seven wins, including Entertainer of the Year - she might have taken at least a short rest on her laurels. Instead, one of the preeminent voices in contemporary American roots music has raised the bar for herself. Magness' fourteenth album, Love Is an Army, is a brilliantly crafted bridge between the past and present, blending the echoes of classic soul and country music with timeless themes of love and the very contemporary sound of protest.

Ray Charles was the musician most responsible for developing soul music. Singers like Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson also did a great deal to pioneer the form, but Charles did even more to devise a new form of black pop by merging '50s R&B with gospel-powered vocals, adding plenty of flavor from contemporary jazz, blues, and (in the '60s) country. Then there was his singing; his style was among the most emotional and easily identifiable of any 20th century performer, up there with the likes of Elvis and Billie Holiday. He was also a superb keyboard player, arranger, and bandleader. The brilliance of his 1950s and '60s work, however, can't obscure the fact that he made few classic tracks after the mid-'60s, though he recorded often and performed until the year before his death.

As the lead singer for the Gaither Vocal Band in the late '80s, Michael English helped popularize modern Southern gospel. He'd later leave the group to become one of the biggest stars in Southern gospel and CCM music in the early '90s. He racked up four Dove Awards – including Artist of the Year, Pop/Contemporary Album of the Year, and Male Vocalist of the Year – in 1994, a haul that suggested he'd be one of the decade's biggest stars, but his success was interrupted by news that he fathered a child out of wedlock. English pivoted to pop music, scoring a crossover hit in 1996 when a cover of John Berry's "Your Love Amazes Me" reached number ten on Billboard's adult contemporary chart. English chose to return to Christian music with the aptly titled Gospel in 1998, and from that point forward he worked steadily, performing live regularly and recording on occasion.

Atlanta, Georgia's Jamie Grace, a Christian singer, songwriter, rapper, multi-instrumentalist (guitar, piano, ukulele, drums), and occasional actress, was born November 25, 1991. While she always had an affinity for music as she was growing up, she turned to it in earnest when she was diagnosed with Tourette syndrome in 2003 at age 11. Mixing folk, country, hip-hop, and reggae into a sunny, hopeful style somewhat reminiscent of a CCM version of Colbie Caillat, Grace began posting versions of her doing cover songs and originals on YouTube. She was discovered there by tobyMac, who signed her to his Gotee record label in 2009 when she was 19 years old.

As half of the legendary R&B duo Sam & Dave, Sam Moore was one of the great voices of the soul music era, but it wasn't until 2006 that his solo career began earning the attention it deserved. Born in Miami, Florida, in 1935, Sam Moore cut his musical teeth singing gospel before he began making a name for himself on Florida's R&B circuit. While playing a Miami club called the King of Hearts in 1961, Moore met another struggling soul singer, Dave Prater; the two discovered they worked well together on-stage when Moore helped Prater through a shaky version of Jackie Wilson's "Dogging Around," and they formed an act called Sam & Dave. After an unsuccessful string of singles for Roulette Records, Sam & Dave hit pay dirt when Jerry Wexler signed them to Atlantic Records in 1965, and sent them to Memphis to work with the Stax Records production crew. At Stax, Sam & Dave scored a long string of hits, including "Soul Man," "Hold on, I'm Coming," and "I Thank You," but while they were a dynamite combination on-stage, Moore and Prater did not get along off-stage, and in 1970 the duo split up.

My Soul Looks Back: The Genius of Marion Williams 1962-1992 is an outstanding 25-track portrait of the legendary gospel singer in all of her glory. Listening to early sides like "Packin' Up" and "Surely God Is Able," it's easy to understand her influence on the likes of Little Richard and Aretha Franklin. These powerful songs are primal blasts of energy with all the cathartic transcendence more commonly attributed to rock & roll. Closer to R&B than any of her contemporaries, Williams also flirts playfully with the blues on cuts like "Dead Cat on the Line" and "It's Your Time Now But My Time After Awhile," and even dabbles in country on a cover of Roy Acuff's "The Great Speckled Bird." Whatever the setting, however, her voice is a marvel of improvisatory brilliance, her soprano never less than devastating. This is gospel at its finest.

Balancing rustic warmth with arena-filling hooks, Carrollton’s Everything or Nothing* *is as comforting as a well-worn pair of jeans. “Glimpses” opens the album with acoustic guitar picking and burnished folk vibes, while “Shelter” and “Stand My Ground” are both catchy statements of praise and devotion. The rest of the songs fit somewhere on that spectrum, and are at once honest about hardship and sincere in their faith in Christ. Especially good is “Rebuilder,” a heartfelt ballad for a creator who can pick up the pieces of the most broken life, making everything new again.
