Phil Tomsett is a UK based sound artist, composing organic, ethereal and impressionistic ambient music for labels such as Home Normal and Fluid Audio. As The Inventors Of Aircraft, Tomsett has also put out records on Time Released Sound, Serein, whitelabrecs, Rural Colours, Audio Gourmet Netlabel and hibernate. If the aesthetic of the mentioned imprints evokes a particular sonic response in your awareness, then you shall know what to expect from his new release. Joined by Aaron Martin for the cello accompaniment, and a touch of Ian Hawgood‘s reel-to-reel analogue mastering, The Sound Of Someone Leaving is a sombre requiem for the empty spaces left behind by a presence fleeting in time. “Absence is powerful.

Written between 1818 and 1823, Beethoven's Missa solemnis was the result of intensive theological and musical research in the library of it's dedicatee, Archduke Rudolph of Austria. It is, in Beethoven's own view, his most ambitious composition. On this recording, René Jacobs shows us that it is also his loftiest. This is the work of a composer with deeply held religious sentiments and profound tenderness for humanity, so confident in his artistry that he could create that which goes beyond liturgical form and expresses in musical terms the universality of divine transcendence.

This new album release by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra under Hannu Lintu presents a new contemporary voice within Finlands contemporary music scene: Antti Auvinen. This album includes three recent orchestral works by the composer marked by highly pressurised and explosive rhythms and sounds. The premieres of Antti Auvinens (b. 1974) Junker Twist (2015) and Himmel Punk (2016) in the mid-2010s electrified the scene of Finlands contemporary music: music critics felt that a new major voice in the countrys music scene had been born. Auvinens works are often thematically connected to events in the surrounding society.

John Jenkins: yet another seventeenth century English composer who deserves to be more widely known. This delightful CD from The Consort of Musicke directed by Trevor Jones is no dutiful study of a hidden but rather uninspiring corner of English early Baroque consort music; rather, a mosaic – rich in color and shape, carefully crafted and full of surprises. Listen, for instance, to the unpretentious, jaunty and appropriately figurative progress through the Saraband (52, tr.6) and the restrained melancholy of the Fancy-Air (4, tr.7). Jenkins' counterpoint is well-wrought, his instrumental palette fresh and crisp and his melodies catchy without being fey or superficial in any way. He is in excellent hands with the Consort of Musicke… eight string players of the caliber of Monica Huggett and Alison Crum violins; Alan Wilson organ and Anthony Rooley theorbo. If fresh, beautiful, expertly-played English consort music appeals to you, don't hesitate to get this gem of a CD – actually a reissue of a Decca disc from 1983: it's unreservedly recommended.

The internationally sought-after cellist Michael Heupel and his pianist Mario Häring, who has also won several awards, enter into an exciting dialogue with the past. On their new GENUIN CD, they present works related to early music. Gaspar Cassado composes a sonata in the "old Spanish style," and Igor Stravinsky sets off into the world of commedia dell'arte. Zoltán Kodály explores Johann Sebastian Bach, and Alfred Schnittke serves up sugar-sweet, baroque-inspired gems, holding up at times a miniature distorting mirror. A virtuosically played, inspiring collection that transcends the past and future.

On their new GENUIN release, the internationally award-winning flutist Atsuko Koga and her fellow musicians Georgiy Lomakov (cello) and Radoslaw Kurek (piano) bring together music by Ludwig van Beethoven, Gabriel Fauré, and Charles Martin Loeffler. The trio's airy, free sound with its unusual combination of instruments is a perfect match for the three works, which represent the piano trio genre in completely different ways: Beethoven's Gassenhauer Trio as an amusing and witty play on stereotypes of its time, Fauré's late work as a detached and intimate meditation, and finally Loeffler's misty impressionistic poems an absolute discovery!

Maurizio Guernieri’s compositions are a part of an ongoing exploration of instrumental chambermusic, in this case focused chiefly on string instruments. The pieces can be divided into two main groups. The first one is Elementa (“elements” in Latin), meditations on the relationship between man and nature, and on the elements of nature, which, being often mismanaged by man, contribute to their own flourishing or decadence. Nature, which has always been called “mother”, turns out to be an “evil stepmother” when she returns to man what he has given her in an extreme attempt to re-establish a balance that has been lost. The second group consists of other pieces that are meditations on man and his inner life. As in the previous cd, Bicinium (tc 940091), the pieces can be listened to in a single musical succession, as if the disc were, to use a term of the past, a “concept album”.

The album "Echoes" by pianist and composer Dirk Maassen is inspired by encounters with his fans. It is about the power of music to express feelings and to connect people across spatial and temporal boundaries. Dirk Maassen has been keeping a musical diary for a long time. In it he writes down the particularly memorable experiences in melodies. Many encounters with his fans have particularly touched him and stimulated him to think about music as a means of communication. Feelings, sensations and experiences echo in music, and people can experience a deep connection even when they are separated from one another. This force overcoming space and time inspired Dirk Maassen to create reduced and at the same time touching piano pieces, some of which he supplements with orchestral arrangements.

This album presents unknown, high quality Swedish 20th century guitar music. From the nationally colored neo-classicism of Gunnar de Frumerie and Erland von Koch, over Karl-Birger Blomdahl and Sven-Eric Johanson, to Bengt Hambraeus and Gunnar Bucht. With two exceptions, these are all world premiere recordings, performed by one of Sweden’s foremost guitarists, Mårten Falk. Mårten Falk is one of Sweden's most multi-faceted guitarists, with repertoire ranging from 16th century vihuela music over Russian 19th century Romantics until today's hardcore contemporary music.

Mields is splendid. Her poise, luminous vocalism and animated dialogue with the band show why she’s an Early Music legend. Her command of the recording’s three languages allows her to relish words as well as music, whether goofing around – as in ‘Bacchus’ HWV228 – or lamenting. Her consistently intelligent musicianship is apparent above all when she improvises according to period and location.

“I was accustomed to say that the composer must look far ahead into the future of his music. This seems to me to be the male train of thought: thinking at once of the whole future, of the entire fate of the idea, and preparing himself in advance for every possible eventuality. This is the manner in which a man builds his house, orders his affairs and arms himself for his wars. The other is the woman’s way of looking at the world, using good powers of judgement to address the immediate consequences of a problem, while failing to allow for more distant events. This is the approach of the seamstress, who could work with the most luxurious fabric, without thinking about how long it will last, provided it achieves the desired effect at the present moment. It need last no longer than the fashion. This is the approach of the kind of cook who prepares a salad without asking herself whether all the ingredients are right and go together well, whether they combine satisfactorily. A French sauce - or perhaps a Franco-Russian one - is poured over it and so everything is blended. Composing to such directions is consequently nothing but the production of a certain style.” (Der Segen der Sauce, p. 150)

If Mieczysław Weinberg had lived for another decade or so after his death in 1996, he would have seen his status change from poorly known outlier to general acceptance as one of the major twentieth-century composers. His violin works have likewise been recognised as major additions to the repertoire. Since Yuri Kalnits and Michael Csányi-Wills began what will be a four-volume survey of Mieczysław Weinberg’s music for violin and piano, other musicians have discovered and recorded many of these masterworks, but on its completion this cycle will still be the first to record all of Weinberg’s violin works.
