This volume collects instrumental tracks, instrumental demos, and TV Mixes that reach through Kevin Gilbert’s career, where he frequently reworked projects of the past, and where the music just as often hinted at things to come. A TV Mix is a version of a song presented without lead vocals, still retaining elements such as instrumentation and background vocals. Much of this collection has gone unheard, and many tracks stand out, perhaps none more than the unfinished and never before released “If Your Love Has To.” There is a story arc to this collection. The early versions and the TV Mixes together forge a portrait of a hard-working musician in a hard-to-work town.

Kevin Gilbert - Thud Live At Rittenhouse Square. Philadelphia, PA. August 23, 1995
There is a distinction to be made between Thud the album, and Thud on tour. Various incarnations of Kevin Gilbert’s Thud band featured differing lineups, from a five-piece to a two-man band. Now, feast your ears upon one tight Thud trio: Kevin Gilbert, Nick D’Virgilio, and Russ Parrish. This Thud band played these songs together only a scant few times, but oh what magic when they did! Volume Eleven of The Archive Series documents the gig they played at Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia, on August 23, 1995.

One of Sonny Rollins' best albums of the 70s – a Japanese-only live date that features some excellent work on both tenor and soprano sax! The group has a really great feel – thanks to congas by Mtume and guitar from Yoshiaki Masuo – both of whom bring some new elements to Rollins' groove, alongside electric bass from Bob Cranshaw and drums from David Lee. Sonny's solos are all well-blown and quite extended – put together with a strong sense of fire, and a bit less of the hoke that could sometimes show up on other US domestic albums. Tracks are all long, and titles include "Powaii", "Moritat", "Alfie", and "St Thomas". This 2CD version features a full bonus disc of previously unreleased work from the concert – 3 titles that include "Hold Em Joe", "Sais", and "God Bless The Child".

2025 Release. Recorded live throughout their globe-spanning 50th anniversary tour in 2023, Mind Explosion is the final album from vanguard world fusion ensemble Shakti. To be released on Abstract Logix, it contains a selection of performances carefully curated from countless hours of concert recordings by co-founding guitarist John McLaughlin and Shakti master percussionist Selvaganesh Vinayakram. Mind Explosion is a rapturous celebration of the life, music, and humanity of Zakir Hussain – not just McLaughlin’s original partner in Shakti, but a brother and inspiration to every past and present member of Shakti – who passed away in December 2024. “I am eternally grateful to Zakir,” McLaughlin reflects, “because he was there before the beginning of Shakti to the very end.”

Bruce Springsteen once said he intended to make an album with words like Bob Dylan that sounded like Phil Spector where he sang like Roy Orbison, a nifty summary of many, but not all, of his artistic ambitions and a key to his appeal. Unlike any other singer/songwriters saddled with the appellation of "the new Dylan" in the early '70s, Springsteen never hid how he was raised on '60s AM radio.

At his peak, Eric Clapton was nicknamed "God" by his fans, an indication of how highly regarded the guitarist was during his glory days. This phrase, immortalized in graffiti that spread across London in 1967, originated a few years earlier when Clapton was playing with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers just after leaving the Yardbirds in 1965. Clapton never was comfortable with the nickname – he embraced "Slowhand," titling his 1977 album after it – but "Clapton Is God" is a pivotal part of his story and an instrumental moment in the rise of the guitar hero, a rock & roll cliché that didn't exist prior to EC.

Arriving with the force of a hurricane, Oasis' third album, Be Here Now, is a bright, bold, colorful tour de force that simply steamrolls over any criticism. The key to Oasis' sound is its inevitability they are unwavering in their confidence, which means that even the hardest rockers are slow, steady, and heavy, not fast.

In the early '70s, after the breakup of Blind Faith and his departure from Delaney & Bonnie, Eric Clapton made a last attempt at being "just one of the boys in the band" with Derek and the Dominos. It was his most inspired of those efforts, although the band only managed one studio album and a tour before falling apart. Powered by the dual guitars of Clapton and Duane Allman, the band created a raw, emotional sound. In tandem with Duane Allman, the two guitars wailed with pure, naked emotion, notably on the album's evergreen "Layla," which became a classic-rock evergreen.

Fans of guitar master Joe Bonamassa will be delighted that 2011 was such a prolific year in his career. First came the fine, rootsy Dust Bowl, then 2, the second chapter in his Black Country Communion project's catalog. Don't Explain, a collection of soul, blues, and jazz-oriented covers in collaboration with vocal firebrand Beth Hart marks his third entry in 2011. This set of blues and soul is a logical extension of her vocal contribution to "No Love on the Street" from Dust Bowl. Opening is a thoroughly raucous contemporary blues reading of Ray Charles' "Sinner's Prayer," followed by a quirky version of Tom Waits' "Chocolate Jesus," and an unusual cover of contemporary jazz-pop singer/songwriter Melody Gardot's "You Heart Is as Black as Night"…

Samba '68 is a vibrant set of Brazilian pop, indebted to bossa nova and samba but undeniably Americanized for a domestic audience. The result is a joyous album throughout that wears its dated sound quite well. Marcos Valle interprets eleven of his own songs, including Brazilian standards like "Chup Chup, I Got Away," "Batucada," and "So Nice (Summer Samba)," as well as new tracks like "Crickets Sing for Anamaria" and "The Answer." The vocal harmonies of his wife (the Anamaria of the song title) provide a beautiful counterpoint to Valle's voice on several tracks, making Samba '68 one of the best Brazilian crossovers of the 1960s.

Taï Phong released 2 sensational progressive rock albums in the mid 70's "Windows" and their debut release. Taï Phong blend the classic prog sounds of Yes with a touch of Pink Floyd. Lead singer Khanh has a higher vocal pitch than Jon Anderson and he is not afraid to let it rip! This band houses some amazing musicianship and song writing capabilities.
Windows (1976) contains many delicate and ethereal bits, although at a slightly lower level if you compare to the previous album. Some bits have excellent piano parts. Like on the first album, there are still many awesome, androgynous & catchy backing vocals; it seems there are more acoustic guitars than on the previous album. There is also an omnipresent densely floating combination of organ and more modern keyboards, which gives an overall ambient mood to this record. The rhythm is rather slow, so the tracks are often relaxing…

A pioneering work for countless styles connected to electronics, ambience, and Third World music, My Life in the Bush of Ghosts expands on the fourth-world concepts of Hassell/Eno work with a whirlwind 45 minutes of worldbeat/funk-rock (with the combined talents of several percussionists and bassists, including Bill Laswell, Tim Wright, David van Tieghem, and Talking Heads' Chris Frantz) that's also heavy on the samples - from radio talk-show hosts, Lebanese mountain singers, preachers, exorcism ceremonies, Muslim chanting, and Egyptian pop, among others. It's also light years away from the respectful, preservationist angles of previous generations' field recorders and folk song gatherers…
