For fans of: The Runaways, Rock Goddess. First time that this show has been made officially available on CD in a new, exclusive CD. Filmed at the Camden Palace on December 7th, 1984, this recording captured the London-based Queen’s of heavy metal, Girlschool, while they were midway through recording their 1985 album, ‘Running Wild’. After a run of classic albums for Bronze Records, home of Motorhead and Uriah Heep, Girlschool had been signed to American major label, Mercury Records. Featuring Cris Bonnaci on lead guitar, and vocalist Jackie Bodimead, alongside founder members Kim McAuliffe and Denise Dufort, with bassist Gil Weston, unsurprisingly this set features a total of five songs – ‘Running Wild’, ‘Are You Ready?’, ‘Nowhere To Run’, ‘Love Is A Lie & Can’t You See’ - from the yet to be released ‘Running Wild’, their first album without lead guitarist and lead singer Kelly Johnson. This raucous, hour-long set was originally filmed for TV, while acting as a useful promotional tool for the imminent US release (inexplicably, the album wouldn’t receive an official release outside of the States until 2015, when it was made available on CD for the first time by HNE). Featuring liner notes from Rich Davenport, based on new interviews with Kim McAuliffe.

Recorded at the Outside In Festival in Crawley, UK in September 1988, Flashing Spirits is a high-intensity, extraordinarily beautiful piano-drums duo, previously unreleased and a revelation even for listeners who followed Taylor’s long and unceasingly exploratory career.

I think that purists will object to the very Slavonic approach to Brahms in these readings. I do not fall into this category and found them immensely enjoyable. The Borodin Trio and Rivka Golani convince one that they are authoritative players even if their bias is rather too much towards succulent sonorities and an overtly emotional use of tone. They do not fall into the trap of over-projecting the music and without denying their own temperaments are still able to offer a definite style of interpretation.

Fabio Biondi has chosen a selection of delightful virtuoso chamber music pieces by Niccolò Paganini to mark his tenth album for Glossa. Together with his long-term colleague from Europa Galante, the plucked-string specialist Giangiacomo Pinardi (here playing an original romantic guitar from c1825), Biondi delivers one of the most special Glossa albums of recent times. The works, composed between 1804 and c1828, are mainly two-movement sonatas contained in the Centone di sonate collection, although the album also includes the popular Sonata concertata in A major.

Chicago 16 finally gave Chicago a big hit after a four-year drought, thanks in large part to new producer David Foster, who steered the jazz-rock veterans toward a streamlined, crisply produced pop direction on that 1982 effort. Given that success, it's no surprise that the septet teamed with Foster again for its next album, 1984's Chicago 17 (apparently Roman numerals were left behind along with their progressive jazz-rock). It's also no surprise that Foster took an even greater control of 17, steering the group further down the adult contemporary road and pushing Peter Cetera toward the front of the group, while pushing the horns toward the back. Indeed, it's often possible to not notice the horns on 17; they either fade into the background or meld seamlessly with the synthesizers that are the primary instruments here, providing not just the fabric but foundation of nearly all the arrangements…

In the middle between Art-Pop-elements, folk-inspired acoustic parts, Rock-fragments and string-orchestra sections, you will find Isgaard‘ s versatile voice flying through the songs and merging all to a style of her own. A very ethereal, rich, powerful and moving release with just the perfect amount of melancholy, by this talented German female vocalist. While some of her early work had a style of Euro tech and dance, on this 2016 recording she sounds like a more gentle Kate Bush or Annie Haslam.

Australian-born adult alternative singer/songwriter Dean Lewis pens yearning, emotionally vulnerable tunes in the vein of contemporaries such as Jamie Lawson, Ed Sheeran, and Lewis Capaldi. Emerging in the late 2010s, he had his first taste of international success with the multi-platinum-selling, multi-billion-streaming single "Be Alright," which was included on his official full-length debut, 2019's A Place We Knew. Lewis' 2022 follow-up album, The Hardest Love, was another success, reaching number four in Australia and spawning the heartfelt global hit single "How Do I Say Goodbye." Collaborations with Julia Michaels and Ruth B followed as he worked toward his next album, with ballads like "The Last Bit of Us" and the heartfelt "Trust Me Mate." These appeared on his more acoustic-oriented third album, The Epilogue, in 2024.

Virtually all of Sam Jones' occasional dates as a leader featured him in a purely supportive role with a medium-size all-star group. This set is a bit different, for Jones is often in the forefront, heading a trio also including pianist Kenny Barron (who switches to electric piano on one song) and drummer Keith Copeland. Barron is actually the dominant soloist during a program consisting of three originals by Jones, two by Barron and the opening Thelonious Monk tune "Rhythm-A-Ning," although Jones has his spots. Well-played post-bop music that is most significant for the contributions of Barron.
