On her 15th studio album, and first in four years, Mariah Carey’s graceful R&B is punctuated by crisp hip-hop production, this time via Timbaland, DJ Mustard, and Drake’s frequent producer Nineteen85. Along with them are some of the most memorable hip-hop features in R&B: Ty Dolla $ign for the chant-led “The Distance” and Gunna on the upbeat, trap-influenced “Stay Long Love You.” When she’s on her own, she uses her spotlight to give a little female-empowerment sass on “GTFO” and “A No No.” But the real standout of the set may be the slinky, six-minute “Giving Me Life,” featuring Slick Rick and Blood Orange’s Dev Hynes. Mariah Carey largely set the template for the current era of hybrid hip-hop/R&B-pop, and Caution proves she’s still pushing the musical conversation forward.

Iain Matthews of Fairport Convention, Southern Comfort and Plainsong fame, returns, after a long absence, with a stunning collection of new songs and stunning jazz arrangements. On paper the pairing of Iain Maatthews and Edbert Derix is a strange one. Egbert Derix is an established jazz composer, from the Netherlands and Iain Matthew's roots, have taken hold in contemporary singer/songwriter circles. However, if we break down these borders, look deeper and think in terms of quality, rather than genres, it's a musical marriage made in heaven. Their second collaborative album focuses around some remarkable new songs. Matthews draws deep upon his recollections of London in the swinging 'sixties – 'When The Floyd Were On The Prow'l and some powerful reflections upon life now – 'Pebbles In The Road' and 'Joy Mining'.

The album cover deceptively depicts five O'Jays when actually only four members Eddie Levert, Walter Williams, William Powell and Bobby Massey sing on these tracks; Bill Isle, the fifth member, quit in the late '60s, and the cover was shot in the mid-'60s, when the group recorded for Imperial Records. George Kerr produced most of these tracks, with some productions from the Poindexter brothers; the recordings were originally released on Bell Records. "I'll Be Sweeter Tomorrow," a gorgeous ballad, became their highest chart entry to date. The follow-up, "Look Over Your Shoulder," nearly duplicated its predecessor's success; both were indicators of good things to come.

Frankie Goes to Hollywood hyped their debut album Welcome to the Pleasuredome so much that when their second record, Liverpool, failed to live up to expectations, their career was effectively over. That didn't stop them from releasing greatest-hits albums, however, nor did it stop the inevitable wave of '80s nostalgia that surged forth in the '90s. To cash in on whatever meager Frankie nostalgia that may have existed, Bang!… Greatest Hits of Frankie Goes to Hollywood appeared in 1994 and was reissued in 1998, when the rights shifted to Universal Records.

The Best of UB40, Vol. 1 is an adequate collection of the group's biggest '80s hits, including "Breakfast in Bed," "Red Red Wine," "Rat in Mi Kitchen," "Food for Thought," "Please Don't Make Me Cry," "Don't Break My Heart," and "Sing Our Own Song." Although it doesn't give enough weight to the group's earliest, edgiest (and best) recordings, it still offers a good sense of the band's evolution into a fine pop-reggae band, and it will satiate the needs of most casual fans. The Best of UB40, Vol. 2 concentrates on the group's '90s recordings…

By time of Kylie Minogue’s eleventh album, 2010's Aphrodite, she had been releasing records for over 20 years. Most artists who’ve stuck around for that long end up rehashing their past catalogs and/or growing stale, but Kylie manages to avoid these fates by constantly working with new collaborators, keeping up on musical trends without pandering to them, and most importantly, never taking herself too seriously. Sure, she’s serious about making great dance music, but she never confuses her status as a pop icon with a desire to send out a message in her music. Aphrodite rarely strays past sweet love songs or happy dance anthems; its deepest message is “everything is beautiful.”

Awesome, 22 song discs containing rockin' holiday tunes from the Western Star stable of rockabilly artists. All of the songs were recorded in the Western Star recording studio, based in the town of Bristol in the UK. This is the case with ALL of this labels release - every song for every release is recorded in their studio. Amazingly, all 22 songs are originals, without a dud in the bunch - if you're tired of the same old holiday tunes, this disc is definitely for you!

‘I had the ambitious plan to release three albums this year: a Morricone-esque soundtrack, a triphop record, and a collection of poppy funky songs. I started writing with that goal in mind. But Luka Cruysberghs, our new 17-year-old singer, considered me an old-fashioned relic. She recommended the Spotify approach: select the best tracks from each record, and subsequently create our own playlist. I initially had my doubts and reservations. Then again: ‘Déjà Vu’ by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young is still one of favourite albums of all time, and that’s a mish-mash of styles and genres too. ‘Deja Vu’ is an eclectic mix of four talented songwriters, with the voice being the glue that keeps it all together. I felt like making a more coherent album as the follow-up to ‘In Wonderland’, but I had to agree that Hooverphonic is defined by said variation. I’m a big fan of heterogeneous albums myself. One and the same vibe can become quite boring while listening.’

After his debut on the tiny Brut Records (a short-lived record label of the famous cologne company), Michael Franks established both his unique sound and a recording process he has continued throughout his career. Primarily a jazz artist, Franks crossed over to pop and rock fans through heavy FM airplay beginning with The Art of Tea. Sensually suggestive and playful tracks, such as "Popsicle Toes" and "Eggplant" contain sly wordplay and almost Henry Mancini-like, breezy jazz-pop. Employing a similar approach as Steely Dan did with its music, Franks' singing and songwriting formed the basis of a sound rooted in the support of top-notch musicians, many of whom were the hottest studio jazz players on the scene. Here, the killer rhythm section of drummer John Guerin and bassist Wilton Felder is augmented by horn pros Michael Brecker and David Sanborn, with Franks and Larry Carlton handling all the guitar work. This winning combination of players, styles, singing, and songwriting would be reshuffled and refined over the years, but perhaps with no finer results than on this official major label debut.
