This budget-priced three-disc Australian import – on RCA, so it's official – compiles Chet Atkins' work from the early '50s to about 1980. Basically, from the time he became "Mr. Guitar" to the end of his prime – though Atkins remained a monster guitarist until his death in 2001. You would have to know Atkins' music to get any of this because, besides a track listing and a cursory essay on how great he was, there is literally no discographical information provided here. Still, there's enough of his well-known material here for any fan to sit up and take notice, such as "Mr. Sandman," "Barbershop Rag," "Hot Toddy" and "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)," both with Les Paul, "Teensville," "Sleepwalk," "Terry on the Turnpike" with Boots Randolph, "Make the World Go Away," "Rocky Top," "Tennessee Stud" and "Mystery Train," both with Jerry Reed, and of course, the amazing "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind" with Dolly Parton. The vast majority, of course, are instrumentals by Atkins.

"There's No Stopping Your Heart" is the 5th solo studio album by American country music singer Marie Osmond. It was her first album in seven years and her first album on Capitol/Curb records. Osmond's previous albums were released when she was a teenager, however this became her first album to be released as an adult. Four singles were released, including two #1 hits on the billboard hot country songs chart. Although the first single, "Until I Fall in Love Again" only reached #54 on the country singles charts it was the follow-up single "Meet Me in Montana," (a duet with Dan Seals) that landed her in the #1 position. This was her first #1 hit since her debut of "Paper Roses" in 1973. The success continued with the release of the title track which also went to #1. The fourth and final single, "Read My Lips," peaked at #4 in 1986. The album spent 43 weeks on the billboard top country album charts and reached a peak position at #16.

THE FIRST TIME…FOR THE LAST TIME is collection of demos a then-unknown Shania Twain recorded in the late 1980s and early 1990s for Canadian label Limelight Records. Written in collaboration with Los Angeles producer Paul Sabu, the songs here are not country music, but rather well-crafted, energetically performed pop/rock fare. Though the production is often dated (particularly on the cruise-ship-dance-party-sounding “For the Love of Him” and the Laura Branigan-esque “It’s Alright), the tracks definitely offer repeated glimpses of Twain’s superstar potential. There are even a few country-tinged numbers (“Bite My Lip,” “Luv Eyes”) that presage Twain and Mutt Lange’s multi-platinum Nashville/arena rock hybrids. Though recordings contained herein have been made available in several other forms, this package goes the extra mile by offering both the original recordings and significantly re-mixed/remastered versions on two different discs.

Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 is a good 12-track collection of Linda Ronstadt's biggest hits from the early '70s, beginning with the Stone Poneys' "Different Drum" and running through "Tracks of My Tears," from 1975's Prisoner in Disguise. In between, all of her best-known songs – "You're No Good," "When Will I Be Loved," "Heat Wave" – are included, plus selected minor hits, making it an excellent overview of her peak years.

By concentrating on his biggest straight country hits for Capitol and Dot Records ("Tips of My Fingers," "Yesterday, When I Was Young," "Thank God and Greyhound," "Come Live with Me") and sidestepping many of the novelty numbers that were associated with Hee-Haw, the 14-song Greatest Hits makes a case for Roy Clark's talents as songwriter and performer, providing a good introduction to his career.

Sometime between the release of her second album Hotel Paper in 2003 and the birth of her first child in 2005, Michelle Branch decided that she was tired of following the adult alternative career path that she'd been pursuing since her 2001 debut Spirit Room. She made no bones about her frustration, memorably posting on her website in late 2005 that she was "tired of sucking ***** to get my music heard" in the course of an inspired rant in which she vented her frustration at the music biz and everything that surrounded it. It was a ballsy move, but it did accomplish its desired effect of loosening the log-jam that stalled her career, particularly her plans to release a duet album with her friend and collaborator Jessica Harp under the name the Wreckers.

Susan Jacks (nee Pesklevits) began her singing career at the age of 14, was a regular performer on a national Canadian television show at 15 and appeared as a guest on numerous other television shows in Canada and the U.S. At 18, she hired Terry Jacks to accompany her on rhythm guitar. Craig McCaw was soon added on lead guitar and Susan stopped performing solo engagements, dedicating her time to the trio. They would eventually add Satwant Singh on tablas, recording and performing as The Poppy Family featuring Susan Jacks. As the voice of the Poppy Family, Susan and the group recorded a string of hit records, the most notable being "Which Way You Goin' Billy?", "That's Where I Went Wrong" and "Where Evil Grows". Susan left the Poppy Family in 1972, resuming her solo career and recorded a string of hits through the seventies and eighties. The Dream album, recorded in 1975, was received with rave reviews as she crossed from a predominantly light pop genre to a more alternative format, moving easily through blues, country rock and alternative rock. Produced by Claire Lawrence, who was not only an accomplished rock musician but also an innovative and solid producer, the album was abruptly removed from the market a few short months after its release, its future uncertain. After regaining her rights to the album and re-mastering by the best in the business, this extraordinary album is now available on CD.

This is an enjoyable reissue from the RCA Chet Atkins catalog, combining two adjoining albums – The Guitar Genius and Chet Atkins and His Guitar – from the mid-'60s onto one very clean if spare CD, with no annotation or session information. Guitar instrumental fans will probably find more to like in the 12 songs off of Chet Atkins and His Guitar than the ten from The Guitar Genius – which are weighted down with vocals a bit too frequently – but it's all a serious sonic pleasure, very clean and bright, if at times a bit too languid for rock & roll, though the version of "Heartbreak Hotel" here will even impress fans on the latter level.
